If Microsoft Store shows 0x800700422, first verify every character: Microsoft’s documented Store and Windows Update guidance covers 0x80070422, not the extra trailing 2. Run wsreset.exe, restart Windows, update Store and Windows, then repair or reset Microsoft Store. If the verified code is 0x80070422, re-enable the Windows Update service.

First, verify which error you actually have

The distinction between 0x800700422 and 0x80070422 matters. The first string in the title is not corroborated in Microsoft’s Store support documentation. Microsoft does document 0x80070422 as a condition in which the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. A screenshot, copied error text, or a handwritten transcription can easily add or move a character, so do not change services or the registry until you have checked the exact on-screen code.

Code you can verify What the available Microsoft guidance establishes Start with
0x800700422 This exact string is not corroborated by the Microsoft Store support pages used for this problem. Treat it as a possible transcription error rather than a confirmed Microsoft diagnostic. Confirm the code, then use the normal Store cache, update, sign-in, repair and reset sequence.
0x80070422 Microsoft says Windows Update may be disabled or stopped. Check the Windows Update service after the Store steps, or go directly to the service procedure below.

Both codes can be reported alongside a Store that will not open, will not download an app, or stops during installation. The Store procedure is safe to try in either case; the service procedure is specifically for the verified 0x80070422 condition.

Microsoft’s general Store guidance is collected in its troubleshooting page for finding or installing an app. Keep that page available if Windows uses slightly different labels in your edition.

Use this order so reversible fixes come first

Work from the least disruptive action to the more targeted repairs. Close games, installers and other Store windows first. You should not need to delete personal files, edit the registry, or download a replacement Store package for the documented sequence below.

  1. Verify the code and note what action failed: opening Store, signing in, downloading, or installing.
  2. Reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe.
  3. Restart Windows and check Windows Update.
  4. Update Store apps from the Store Library and sign in again if necessary.
  5. Repair Microsoft Store, then reset it if repair does not work.
  6. Reinstall the Store app only if Windows presents a supported reinstall option.
  7. For a verified 0x80070422, enable and start the Windows Update service.
  8. If Store is missing, check the Microsoft account and administrator restrictions.

Test the same action after each step. That tells you which change solved the problem and avoids making several changes that are difficult to undo.

1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

Run the command

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type wsreset.exe.
  3. Select OK and wait. Do not close the command window yourself.

Microsoft describes the expected result this way: “A blank command prompt window will open, and after about ten seconds the window will close, and Microsoft Store will open automatically.” The delay can vary with the PC, but the window should close on its own and Store should launch. This resets Store’s cache; it is not a removal of your installed games or apps.

If nothing opens

Wait for the command window to close completely, then open Start and select Microsoft Store manually. If the command reports that it cannot run, check that you entered the filename exactly, including the period, and run it again from a new Run dialog. If Store still does not launch, continue rather than repeatedly running the command.

Microsoft lists wsreset.exe as its initial Store action in the app-installation troubleshooting instructions.

2. Restart Windows and install pending updates

Restart after updates or a failed installation

Select Start > Power > Restart. A restart is especially important if Windows recently installed an update or asked for one. A Store process or servicing component can remain in a pending state until Windows starts again.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update (on some Windows 10 systems, select Update & Security > Windows Update).
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates and restart when Windows requests it.

After the restart, try opening Store and repeat the download or installation that failed. Microsoft includes restarting and checking for Windows updates in its Store-app guidance. For update-specific failures, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Refresh Store, sign in and update its apps

Close and reopen Store

Close every Microsoft Store window, wait a few seconds, and open it from Start. If it was frozen, this ends the visible session without changing installed apps.

Confirm the account

Select the account icon in Store and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the app or game. If Store is showing a different account, sign out and sign in with the intended one. A Store download can fail when the account is not authenticated even though Windows itself is running normally.

Get Store updates

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Select Get updates (the wording can vary slightly by Windows release).
  4. Allow Store to finish updating its apps, then retry the affected app.

Microsoft’s Store-app troubleshooting guidance also recommends closing and reopening the app, signing in, repairing or resetting the app, and reinstalling it when necessary. If the failed item is a game or another app, check whether other Store downloads work; one app-specific licensing or package problem is different from a Store-wide failure.

4. Repair Microsoft Store in Settings

Use Repair before Reset

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps. Windows 10 may label this Apps & features.
  3. Find Microsoft Store, select its More options button (the three dots), and choose Advanced options.
  4. Under Reset, select Repair.
  5. When Windows finishes, open Store and test it.

Repair is the less disruptive choice: it attempts to correct the app without the full reset of its stored app data. The exact labels depend on the Windows edition, but the path is documented by Microsoft in its repair and reset instructions.

Reset only if Repair fails

Return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Read the confirmation before accepting it. Reset removes Microsoft Store’s local app data and signs the app state back into a clean configuration; it does not uninstall the Windows operating system. Open Store, sign in again if asked, and use Library > Get updates before retrying the original installation.

Reinstall when Windows offers it

Microsoft’s Store guidance includes reinstalling an affected app if repair and reset do not resolve it. Follow an Uninstall or Reinstall control only when it is actually available for that app and edition of Windows, then reinstall it from Store. Do not download an unofficial Store installer or a random package from a third-party site.

5. If the verified code is 0x80070422, fix Windows Update

Use this branch only after confirming that the displayed code is 0x80070422. Microsoft associates that code with a Windows Update service that is disabled or stopped. Changing this service will not prove that the title’s extra trailing 2 was valid.

Set the service to Automatic and start it

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter services.msc and select OK.
  3. In the list, locate Windows Update.
  4. Double-click it. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  5. If Service status is Stopped, select Start.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Restart the PC.
  8. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the startup type is controlled by an organization or the controls are unavailable, do not force the change. A work or school administrator may have deliberately configured update behavior. Ask that administrator to review the policy. Microsoft’s documented explanation and procedure are on its Windows Update troubleshooting page.

What to do if Windows Update will not start

Record the message shown in the service dialog, restart once, and retry the update check. If the service immediately stops again, the problem is no longer a simple Store-cache issue; use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting flow rather than changing unrelated services. Avoid registry “fix” files and scripts that claim to repair every Store error, because they can alter permissions and update settings without explaining what changed.

6. When Microsoft Store is missing from Windows

Check the Microsoft account first

Open Settings > Accounts and confirm that Windows is signed in as expected. Then search Start for Microsoft Store. A missing Store entry does not automatically mean that Windows is damaged; account state and device policy can affect whether the app is available.

Check for a work or school restriction

On a managed PC, an administrator can disable Microsoft Store. If the computer belongs to an employer, school or family organization, ask the administrator whether Store access is intentionally blocked. Do not attempt to bypass that policy. Microsoft explains these account and administrator possibilities in its guidance for a missing Microsoft Store app.

Separate a missing app from a broken app

If Store appears in Start but closes immediately, use the cache, restart, update, repair and reset sequence above. If it is absent for every Windows user and the PC is managed, policy is more likely than a temporary cache problem. If it is absent only for one account, sign-in and account configuration deserve attention first.

7. Match the remedy to the symptom

Symptom Most appropriate next action Why
Store opens but shows stale pages or will not load Run wsreset.exe, then restart. This is a reversible Store-cache action.
Store opens, but downloads remain pending after an update Restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, then use Library > Get updates. Pending servicing and Store app updates can require a restart.
Store opens and immediately closes Use Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Store > Advanced options > Repair, then Reset. These are the documented app-level repairs.
Windows displays 0x80070422 Check Windows Update in services.msc, set it to Automatic, start it, restart, and check for updates. Microsoft ties this verified code to a disabled or stopped update service.
Microsoft Store cannot be found Confirm the Microsoft account and ask whether an administrator disabled Store. Account and device policy can explain an absent app.

8. Common mistakes that make the problem harder

  • Working from the title instead of the screen: the extra final 2 changes which diagnosis is supported. Copy the code exactly.
  • Resetting before repairing: Repair is the gentler first app action; Reset clears local Store data and may require another sign-in.
  • Stopping services at random: the documented service change applies to a verified 0x80070422, not every Store failure.
  • Skipping the restart: updates and Store package operations can remain pending until Windows restarts.
  • Using unofficial installers: do not replace Microsoft Store with files from an unverified download site.
  • Ignoring management controls: a work or school policy can be intentional and cannot be safely solved by a local cache reset.

9. Confirm the fix

After the relevant step, verify the result with a small, repeatable test:

  1. Open Microsoft Store without it closing.
  2. Open Library and select Get updates.
  3. Open the page for the app or game that failed.
  4. Start the installation and watch whether it moves beyond the previous failure point.
  5. If the code returns, capture the exact code and the step at which it appeared.

If the Store works but one title still fails, the remaining issue may belong to that app’s account, licensing or package rather than Microsoft Store itself. If every Store action fails after cache reset, restart, updates, repair and reset, use the linked Microsoft troubleshooting pages with the exact Windows version and message available.
