Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMicrosoft Store error 0x80070422 usually means a Windows service needed by the Store is disabled or cannot start. The title “0X8007042” is one hexadecimal digit short, so first confirm the complete code shown on your PC. If the final digit is not 2, use the exact code when searching Microsoft Support because the cause and remedy may differ.
Work through the supported fixes in order: sign in, restart the Store, install Windows and Store updates, repair or reset the Store, clear its cache with wsreset.exe, and then inspect required services. Only after those steps should you use package-registration or policy checks.

What error 0x80070422 means
For Microsoft Store and Windows components, 0x80070422 is associated with a service that cannot start because it is disabled or has no enabled devices associated with it. Winhelponline describes the message as “The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.” That wording points to a configuration or service-state problem, not proof that an app or the Store itself is malicious.
The code can appear when you open the Store, download an app, update an installed app, or try to use account-dependent Store functions. A blocked administrator policy, a proxy or firewall that prevents Store endpoints from being reached, an unregistered Store package, or an account and region mismatch can produce similar symptoms. The code alone does not identify which of these is present.

Confirm the exact code and your Windows edition
- Open the error dialog or notification and copy the entire hexadecimal code, including every digit. Record whether it is
0x80070422or another value. - Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and select OK. Note whether the device runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the displayed version. - Write down whether the Store opens normally, whether one app or every app fails, and whether the problem affects all user accounts or only yours. These distinctions determine which branch below is appropriate.
If the full code is different from 0x80070422, continue with the general Store sequence but do not assume the service diagnosis applies. If the device belongs to an employer, school, family group, or managed gaming setup, an administrator may intentionally restrict Store access.

Complete the Microsoft sequence, run wsreset.exe, then inspect Windows services. |
| Only one app is unavailable | Check region, family settings, compatibility, removal from the Store, and account authorization before changing system settings. |
| The Store works for another Windows account | Repair or reset the affected user’s Store app and consider per-user package registration. |
| The Store is absent or blocked on a managed PC | Ask the device administrator to review Store policy and network endpoints; do not bypass organizational controls. |

Run Microsoft’s basic Store recovery sequence
1. Sign in with the authorized Microsoft account
Open Microsoft Store and select the account icon. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the app or subscription. If you use multiple accounts, verify that the account shown in the Store is the one authorized for the purchase. A local Windows account can remain on the PC, but Store licensing still depends on the account used for the app.
2. Close and reopen the Store
Close every Store window. Wait a few seconds, open it again from Start, and retry the same download. If the Store is frozen, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Microsoft Store, choose End task, and launch it again. Ending the task does not remove installed apps.

3. Install available Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, choose Windows Update. On Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install all applicable updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it, even if the Store appears to work before the restart. Pending servicing changes can prevent Store services from starting.
4. Update Microsoft Store
On Windows 11, open Store, select Library, and choose Get updates. On Windows 10, open Store, select Downloads and updates, and choose Get updates. Let the Store finish its update cycle, then close and reopen it.
5. Repair the Store app
- Open Settings and select Apps.
- On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Store, open its additional options, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish. Repair is designed to correct the app installation without deleting its local data.
6. Reset the Store app if repair did not help
Return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Windows warns that app data can be removed. Confirm only after noting any Store-specific settings you may need to restore, then restart the Store and sign in again. If the Store still fails, uninstall and reinstall the affected app from its Store page when that option is available.
Clear the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
Microsoft Support’s instruction is: “Enter wsreset.exe then select OK.” This command clears the Store cache without requiring you to delete folders manually.
- Press
Win+Rto open the Run dialog. - Type
wsreset.exeexactly and select OK. - A blank Command Prompt window appears. Do not close it while it runs.
- Microsoft says the window closes after roughly ten seconds and Microsoft Store opens automatically.
- Try the download or update again. If Store does not open automatically, launch it from Start after the command window closes.
The cache reset is different from the Settings app’s Reset button. If both have failed, proceed to service and authorization checks rather than repeatedly running the same command.
Check whether the app is available and authorized
An “access denied” experience is not always a permissions failure. Microsoft lists several reasons an app may be hidden or unavailable:
- Your Microsoft account’s region does not match the app’s distribution region.
- Family settings restrict the app or its age rating.
- The publisher or Microsoft removed the app from the Store.
- The device does not meet the app’s hardware or Windows-version requirements.
- An update requires a restart before installation can continue.
- The account currently signed in is not authorized for the app.
Check the app’s Store page while signed in, compare its requirements with your device, and verify the region in Windows and in your Microsoft account. If the page is unavailable for every account on the same PC, removal, compatibility, or regional availability is more likely than a local cache problem.
Inspect services when the code is exactly 0x80070422
Do this after the basic sequence and cache reset. You need an account allowed to view or change Windows services. On a managed computer, service settings may be controlled by policy; record what you find and contact the administrator instead of forcing a change.
Open the Services console
- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and select OK. - In the list, locate each service named below.
- Open a service’s properties and check its Service status and Startup type. If it is stopped and the Start button is available, starting it is a reversible test.
- Retry the Store after each relevant change. Do not change unrelated services.
Windows Update
Windows Update supplies servicing components that Store operations can depend on. If it is explicitly marked Disabled, note that state and ask an administrator to restore the organization’s intended startup configuration. If it is stopped but can be started, start it, close the Services console, and test the Store.

Windows License Manager Service
This service handles licensing functions used by Microsoft Store apps. A disabled or stopped service can prevent authorization or installation. Check its status and record any error shown when you select Start.
Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant
This service supports Microsoft-account sign-in. If Store sign-in loops, shows an account error, or loses authorization, inspect this service as well as the account icon inside Store.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
BITS transfers data in the background and is included in the service checklist for this error. If it is disabled, document the setting and involve the administrator before changing a policy-controlled PC. If it can be started normally, retry the Store after starting it.
Web Account Manager
Web Account Manager is another service in the checklist. Its state can affect account-connected Windows features. Check whether it is stopped or disabled and whether Windows reports a dependency or permissions error when you try to start it.

Microsoft Learn documents a PowerShell check for the Store package. Use this only when the Store package appears missing or the Store works for one account but not another. Package commands can affect the current user, and a typo can create a new problem.
- Open PowerShell under the affected normal user account. For per-user registration, do not use an elevated administrator prompt.
- Run
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore*. - Review whether a Microsoft Store package is returned. If no package appears, the Store may be absent, damaged, or restricted by policy; contact the administrator before attempting removal or sideloading.
- If the package exists but is not registered for the user, Microsoft Learn documents
Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe. - Close PowerShell, restart Windows, sign in to Store, and test one app download.
The documented family name is specific to Microsoft Store. Do not substitute a guessed package name, run registration in an elevated window for a normal user, or delete AppX folders manually. If PowerShell reports a deployment, policy, or dependency error, preserve the complete message for the administrator or Microsoft Support.
Review administrator policy and network access
Microsoft Learn advises administrators to check whether Store-blocking policy is applied and whether firewall or proxy endpoints required by the Store are reachable. This branch is especially important when the Store is unavailable for every user, the PC is managed, or the error returns immediately after a service is enabled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store is intentionally blocked by Group Policy, mobile-device management, family controls, or another organizational rule.
- Check the organization’s approved firewall and proxy configuration. Do not disable security software or bypass a proxy to “test” the Store unless the administrator gives you a temporary, documented procedure.
- Test from the approved network. A captive portal, content filter, or authentication requirement can prevent Store endpoints from completing sign-in or downloads.
- If policy is supposed to allow Store, have the administrator compare the affected PC with a working device and review Windows event or management logs.
Use winget only when Store policy permits it
Microsoft Learn notes that winget search and winget install can manage Store packages. This is an alternative management path, not a way to defeat a Store block.
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt under an account permitted to install apps.
- Search for the package with
winget search <app-name>. Confirm the result, publisher, and source before installing. - Install with
winget install <package-id>only when the package is clearly identified and your organization allows it. - If winget reports that the source, account, or policy is unavailable, stop and give the exact output to the administrator rather than changing security settings.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
Contact the device administrator or Microsoft Support when services are repeatedly disabled, a policy blocks Store access, registration fails with deployment errors, or firewall and proxy checks cannot be completed. Escalate with the full error code, Windows version, affected account, exact app name, time of failure, and any service or PowerShell error text.
Avoid registry ownership changes, deleting protected Windows folders, installing an unknown Store package, or disabling antivirus, firewall, or proxy controls. Those actions can damage Windows or violate an organization’s security policy, and they are not part of Microsoft’s supported sequence for this error.
Quick Recap
If you want an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log.
