What error 0x80070422 means
0x80070422 maps to the Windows service error ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In Microsoft’s Windows Update documentation, it means the Windows Update service has stopped working, is not running, or has been disabled. Microsoft Store relies on Windows Update components for Store app installation and updates, so a disabled service can surface as a Store failure even when the Store application itself is intact.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe code is not, by itself, evidence of malware or a damaged computer. It identifies a service-state problem. The exact wording and available controls vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds, and the same code can appear in the Store, Xbox-related installations, or Windows Update.

Use the least invasive repair that matches what you see:
| Symptom | Most likely control layer | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Store will not open | Store cache or app package | Run wsreset.exe; then repair or reset Microsoft Store |
| Store opens but downloads or updates fail with 0x80070422 | Windows Update service | Set Windows Update to Automatic and start it |
| Only a work or school PC cannot download | Policy, proxy, or firewall | Check with the administrator and verify required endpoints are reachable |
| One app fails while other Store downloads work | That app’s package or account state | Repair, reset, or reinstall the affected app |
Before changing anything
- Save open work and sign in to Windows with an account that has permission to manage services.
- Record the exact message and whether the failure is opening Store, downloading an app, or installing an update. This determines which later branch is relevant.
- Do not disable unrelated services while troubleshooting. Verify the Windows Update service first.
- If the PC is managed by an employer, school, or family safety administrator, a policy may intentionally restrict Store downloads. You may need that administrator to make the change.
Fix 0x80070422 by enabling Windows Update
This is the primary repair for the documented cause. It works whether the code appeared in Microsoft Store or in Windows Update.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. Confirm any User Account Control prompt. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section is usually fastest.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
- Set Startup type to Automatic. This allows Windows to start the service rather than leaving it disabled.
- Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK. If the service was already running, still confirm that its startup type is not Disabled.
- Restart the PC. After Windows loads, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Then retry the Store operation.
If Start is unavailable, the startup-type control is locked, or the service stops again immediately, do not change random services. A policy, damaged update components, permissions problem, or another dependency may be preventing it from running. Continue with the troubleshooter and component-reset guidance below.

Run Windows Update troubleshooting
Windows includes a built-in Windows Update troubleshooter that can detect service and update-component conditions. The labels differ slightly by build, but the path is normally in Settings under System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Troubleshoot on Windows 10.
- Open Settings.
- Open the Windows Update troubleshooting page for your version of Windows.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and allow it to apply any proposed repair.
- Restart the PC if prompted.
- Return to Windows Update, select Check for updates, and test Microsoft Store again.
If the troubleshooter reports that update components are damaged or cannot be repaired, use Microsoft’s Windows Update component-reset guidance for your Windows version. Component reset is more invasive than changing the service startup type, so use it after confirming that Windows Update is set to Automatic and still fails. Follow the commands and restart instructions in Microsoft’s current guidance rather than copying a reset script intended for a different Windows build.
Recover Microsoft Store itself
When Windows Update is running but Store still fails, work through these Store-specific actions in order. Stop when the symptom is resolved.
Sign in and install pending Windows updates
Open Microsoft Store and make sure you are signed in with the Microsoft account you use for Store apps. Then install any pending Windows updates from Settings > Windows Update. Store installation and update services depend on Windows Update endpoints, so a pending system update can leave Store operations incomplete even after the service is enabled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Update Microsoft Store from Library
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates. On some builds, the button or menu wording may differ slightly.
- Allow Store updates to finish, then retry the app download.
Reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe
If Store will not open, or its window opens and closes without loading, reset its local cache:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - A blank Command Prompt window may remain visible for about ten seconds. Do not close it while the reset runs.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically when the cache reset completes. Try the download or update again.
This operation resets the Store cache; it does not remove your installed Windows applications.
Repair, then reset Microsoft Store
Windows can repair the Store app without immediately deleting its local app data. If repair does not help, reset the app.
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft Store, open its menu, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair and wait for it to finish. Test Store.
- If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset, then confirm. Reset can clear the Store app’s local data and may require you to sign in again.
Builds use slightly different labels and layouts. If you cannot find Advanced options, update Windows first and search Settings for Microsoft Store’s app options.
Reinstall the affected app
If Microsoft Store opens and other downloads work but one application fails, repair or reset that application from its own Advanced options page. If that does not resolve the problem, uninstall the affected app and install it again from Store. Reinstalling is a targeted step for a damaged app package; it is not a substitute for enabling Windows Update when the Store-wide error is 0x80070422.
Check time and location
Incorrect system time, time zone, region, or location settings can interfere with Store authentication and availability. In Settings, verify that Windows is using the correct date, time zone, region, and location for where the PC is being used. Restart Store after correcting any mismatch.
If Store downloads still fail
A running Windows Update service does not rule out other control layers. Microsoft’s Store-download guidance calls out registration, policy restrictions, and network access to required endpoints.

Check Microsoft Store registration
Store must be registered for the current Windows user. Registration problems can occur after profile changes, system repairs, or incomplete app-package updates. If the Store opens for one Windows account but not another, the issue is likely user-specific registration rather than a machine-wide service failure. Use Microsoft’s current Store-download and app-registration guidance for the exact procedure supported by your Windows build.
Check policy restrictions
Work, school, family, or security policies can block Store downloads even when Windows Update is enabled. A managed device may hide Store controls, prevent app installation, or restrict the account that can install packages. Do not bypass an organization’s policy; ask the administrator whether Store installation is permitted and whether a policy change is required.
Check firewall and proxy access
Store installation and updates require access to Microsoft’s Store and Windows Update endpoints. A firewall, proxy, content filter, or security gateway can block those endpoints while ordinary web browsing continues to work. Verify that the PC is using the intended network, review the configured proxy, and ask the network administrator to allow the required Microsoft endpoints. On a home network, temporarily testing another trusted connection can help distinguish a local PC problem from a network-policy problem.
Use winget as a package-management alternative
When Store’s graphical interface remains unavailable but Windows package-management components are working, Microsoft documents Windows Package Manager commands as an alternative:
winget search <App name>
winget install <App name>
Replace <App name> with the application name you need. The search command helps identify the package before installation. This does not repair Microsoft Store itself, and it may not be suitable for apps that require Store licensing, account integration, or a particular publisher package.

| What happens | Action sequence | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| Store will not open at all | wsreset.exe → Store repair → Store reset → sign-in and updates |
Starts with the local cache and then repairs the app package before using broader changes |
| Store opens, but every download returns 0x80070422 | Windows Update service → restart → Windows Update check → troubleshooter | The documented code points first to a disabled or stopped Windows Update service |
| Windows Update service cannot be started | Check startup type → run Windows Update troubleshooter → follow component-reset guidance | A locked or repeatedly stopping service can indicate damaged components or policy control |
| Only one app fails | Repair/reset that app → reinstall it | A single-package failure does not necessarily indicate a Store-wide problem |
| Downloads fail only on a managed network | Check policy, proxy, firewall, and required endpoints with the administrator | Network or organizational controls can block Store traffic independently of local service state |
Common pitfalls and recovery
Confusing the code with 0X080070422
Search results and screenshots may show the extra-zero form 0X080070422. Use 0x80070422 when searching Microsoft documentation, because that is the documented error identifier. A different code can represent a different failure and require a different repair.
Changing every service to Automatic
Do not change unrelated services in an attempt to make Store work. Microsoft identifies the relevant service as Windows Update. Altering other startup settings can create new boot, privacy, or performance problems and makes diagnosis harder.
Closing wsreset.exe too soon
The blank Command Prompt window shown by wsreset.exe is expected. Microsoft says it may remain visible for about ten seconds before Store opens. Closing it interrupts the cache reset.
Resetting before trying Repair
Repair is the less disruptive Store-app action. Reset may clear local Store data and require another sign-in, so use it only after Repair has failed.
Assuming Windows 10 has ordinary ongoing support
Microsoft records that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The exact update availability and Store behavior on a Windows 10 installation therefore depend on its edition, build, and servicing status. The service and Store steps above may still be available, but do not assume that an unsupported Windows 10 installation will continue receiving ordinary free security updates.
When the error remains after all built-in steps
At this point, classify the failure before repeating resets:
- If Windows Update is still disabled or its controls are locked, investigate administrator policy and permissions.
- If Windows Update runs but Store cannot reach services, investigate firewall, proxy, DNS, and endpoint access.
- If Store fails for one Windows profile only, investigate user registration and account sign-in.
- If Store fails for every profile after a component reset, use Microsoft’s current Windows Update and Store support guidance for the specific Windows build.
Keep the exact code, Windows edition and build, service status, and the step where the failure occurs. Those details distinguish a service problem from a package, account, or network problem and prevent repeating unrelated repairs.
Bottom line
The intended code is almost certainly 0x80070422, and the first fix is to open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and check for updates. If Store itself remains broken, reset its cache with wsreset.exe, update Store from Library > Get updates, repair or reset the app, and then check registration, policy, and network access.
