How to Fix Microsoft Store Error 0x80070422 (Windows Update Service Disabled)

Microsoft Store error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The quickest manual repair is to open services.msc, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and try the Store again. If downloads still fail, reset the Store cache with wsreset.exe, install pending updates, verify time and region settings, and check network or organizational restrictions.

Searches often contain the transposed code 0X800070422. Microsoft documents the condition as 0x80070422; the instructions below address that official error.

What Microsoft Store error 0x80070422 means

The code is associated with Windows Update, not with a particular game or app. Microsoft describes 0x80070422 as the Windows Update service being disabled or stopped. Microsoft Learn maps the condition to ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED: Windows Update has stopped working or is not running.

Microsoft Store uses Windows Update infrastructure to install and update Store apps. Consequently, the Store may open but refuse to download, remain stuck at “Starting download,” or fail to launch when the service is disabled. A firewall, proxy, VPN, or company policy can create a similar symptom even when the service itself is running.

Why the code is often typed differently

User searches commonly show 0X800070422 or other transpositions. Windows error codes are normally written with a lowercase x after the zero, so the documented form is 0x80070422. Use the documented form when searching Microsoft support or checking event logs.

Before changing anything

  • Save open work and sign in with an account that can change Windows services.
  • Note exactly what fails: opening Microsoft Store, downloading a new app, updating an installed app, or checking Windows Update. That symptom determines which branch to test after each repair.
  • Disconnect only unnecessary VPN connections for the test. Do not disable security software permanently; if a managed computer blocks the service, contact the administrator instead of changing policy.
  • Confirm whether the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11. The Store troubleshooting guidance applies to both editions, but menu names differ slightly.

Fix the Windows Update service first

This is the primary repair for 0x80070422. Do it before clearing caches or changing network settings.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
  3. In the services list, locate Windows Update. Double-click it to open Windows Update Properties.
  4. Open the Startup type menu and choose Automatic. This allows Windows to start the service during normal operation instead of leaving it disabled.
  5. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
  6. Select Apply, then OK to close the properties window.

If the Startup type menu is already Automatic and the service is running, do not repeatedly restart it. Continue with the restart and Store-cache steps; a running service does not rule out a damaged cache or blocked network endpoint.

If Start is unavailable or Windows reports an error

A greyed-out Start button, an immediate stop, or an “access denied” message usually indicates a permissions or policy problem rather than a Store-cache problem. Reopen services.msc using an administrator account. On a work or school computer, a management policy may intentionally control Windows Update; only the organization’s administrator can change that policy.

Do not download an unofficial “Store fixer” or change unrelated registry values to force the service on. A third-party utility can make the service state harder to diagnose and is not an official remedy for this code.

Restart Windows and test both services

Restart the computer after changing the service. A restart reloads the service configuration and clears processes that still hold an old Store or update session.

  1. Open Settings and check Windows Update. In Windows 11, use Settings > Windows Update. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates. If Windows begins checking normally, the service change took effect.
  3. Open Microsoft Store and repeat the action that failed. Try one small, free app or one pending app update rather than starting several downloads at once.

If Windows Update works but the Store still fails, the service is probably no longer the only issue. Continue to the cache and configuration checks below.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

A damaged local Store cache can prevent the Store from opening or completing a download after Windows Update has been repaired.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type wsreset.exe and select OK.
  3. Expect a blank Command Prompt window. Microsoft says it may remain visible for about ten seconds.
  4. Wait for the window to close and for Microsoft Store to open automatically.
  5. Retry the same download or update.

wsreset.exe does not uninstall your Store apps. It resets the Store cache used for the transaction. If nothing opens after the command finishes, restart Windows once more and test the Store while connected to a normal, unrestricted network.

Install pending Windows updates

Store components can depend on Windows servicing updates. After enabling Windows Update, install everything Windows offers before troubleshooting more deeply.

  1. Return to Settings > Windows Update (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update (Windows 10).
  2. Select Check for updates and allow downloads and installation to finish.
  3. Restart when Windows requests it, even if the Store appears to work before the restart.
  4. Check for updates again after the restart. Some updates are delivered in stages and appear only after a reboot.

If the Windows Update page itself still reports 0x80070422, return to services.msc and confirm that Windows Update did not revert to Disabled. A service that repeatedly reverts can be controlled by policy or by a system-management tool.

Verify automatic date, time, language, and region

Microsoft lists date, time, language, and region checks for Store launch problems. Incorrect values can invalidate sign-in or download requests even when the update service is healthy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically and select Sync now if that option is available.
  3. Open Time & language > Language & region and confirm that the country or region matches your actual location.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Time & Language > Date & time.
  2. Enable automatic time and verify the time zone.
  3. Open Region and confirm the country or region.

Restart after correcting these settings, then run wsreset.exe once more and test the Store. Changing region merely to obtain a different Store catalog can create licensing and availability problems; use your actual region for troubleshooting.

Check network, firewall, proxy, VPN, and policy access

Windows Update endpoints must be reachable for Microsoft Store to install and update apps. If the service is running but downloads still fail, investigate the connection rather than changing the service again.

Test a simple network path

  • Disconnect a VPN temporarily and retry on the ordinary network connection.
  • If possible, test a different trusted network, such as a phone hotspot. A successful test elsewhere points to the original router, DNS filtering, firewall, or proxy.
  • Check whether other Microsoft services and ordinary websites load. A total loss of connectivity is different from a Store-only block.

Review firewall and proxy controls

A firewall or proxy can block the endpoints Windows Update needs. Confirm that your security product or network firewall permits Windows Update and Microsoft Store traffic. If the device uses an organization-managed proxy, ask the network administrator to verify the required endpoints rather than entering random proxy addresses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider organizational restrictions

Work, school, and family-managed computers may disable Windows Update or Microsoft Store through policy. The service can appear correct in the local window while a policy stops it again at the next refresh. A policy owner must change that configuration; local troubleshooting cannot override an intentional restriction.

Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

Use the troubleshooter after the service, cache, and network checks. It can identify a disabled service or a common update configuration problem without deleting system files.

Windows 11 path

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Apply any repair it reports, restart Windows, and check both Windows Update and Microsoft Store.

Windows 10 path

  1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  2. Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Apply the suggested repair, restart, and repeat the Store test.

Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance also recommends enabling Windows Update, starting it manually, and resetting Windows Update components when ordinary service repair is not enough. Component reset is an advanced step: use Microsoft’s documented procedure for your Windows version, keep a backup of important work, and do not delete update folders at random.

Windows 10 support lifecycle note

The Store troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Separately, Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 computer may still perform the service and cache repairs described here, but the operating system no longer receives standard support. If the computer is eligible, plan a supported Windows 11 upgrade; do not treat the lifecycle date as the cause of 0x80070422.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Escalate instead of repeating the same commands when Windows Update cannot be started with an administrator account, the service immediately stops after every restart, or a managed policy controls the setting. Also escalate when a different network produces the same failure and the Store cache reset has had no effect. Provide the administrator or support technician with the exact code, the Windows edition, whether Windows Update starts, and whether wsreset.exe opened the Store. Those details separate a service-state problem from an endpoint or policy block.

Optional shortcut

After the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for checking common Windows issues, broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, temporary and cache files, settings that add CPU, RAM, or disk load, and related crash logs. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial of at least two days by category, and then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
