Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Microsoft Store shows 0x8007422 when an app or game will not download, first confirm every character of the code. Microsoft’s published troubleshooting material does not define that exact literal code, while a closely related code, 0x80070422, is associated with a disabled service. Restart Store, install Windows and Store updates, run wsreset.exe, repair or reset the affected app, and only then investigate Windows services or device-management restrictions.
What Microsoft Store code 0x8007422 means
There is no definitive Microsoft support entry for the exact literal 0x8007422 in the material available for this error. User reports describe it when Microsoft Store cannot download apps or games; one report mentions seeing it while opening Minecraft and signing in. Another report combines the code with an inability to enable Windows Update and Windows Error 1058 when starting a service. Those reports describe symptoms, not an official diagnosis.

Because one missing or extra digit changes the diagnosis, read the message again or zoom in on the screenshot. The Microsoft Q&A material discusses the closely related 0x80070422, which it identifies as ERR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Treat that interpretation as applicable only if your screen actually says 0x80070422, or if Windows Update or a related service also reports that it is disabled.

Check whether the problem is global
- Try opening Microsoft Store and viewing another app’s page.
- Note whether every download fails or only one title, such as Minecraft.
- Record your Windows edition and build, and whether the computer is personal, work-managed, or school-managed.
These details determine whether the problem is an app package, Store cache, Windows servicing, or an administrator policy.
Fix Microsoft Store error 0x8007422 in order
1. Sign in to the Microsoft account used by Store
Open Microsoft Store and select the account icon. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the app or game, or that you normally use for Store purchases. If the account shown is wrong, sign out and sign back in with the correct one. For a game that fails during sign-in, verify the same account is being used in the Store and in the game’s launcher.
Do not remove the account from Windows merely to test this error. First establish whether Store can download after a normal sign-in.
2. Fully close and reopen Store or the affected app
- Close the Store or game window.
- Wait a few seconds so the process can finish closing.
- Launch it again from Start.
- Retry the same download or sign-in action.
This low-risk step clears a one-time stalled session without changing installed apps or Windows services.
3. Install pending Windows updates
Microsoft’s Store guidance places Windows updating early in the sequence because Store depends on current Windows components.
- Windows 11: open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Install the offered updates and restart when Windows requests it. After the restart, open Store and test the download again. If Windows Update itself refuses to start and the displayed Store code is actually 0x80070422, continue to the service check below rather than repeatedly selecting Check for updates.
4. Update Microsoft Store itself
In Store, select Library > Get updates. On some Windows 10 layouts, select See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates. Let Store finish checking and installing available Store updates, then retry the affected app.

A Store update cannot be installed until Store can reach its update service.
5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait while the blank Command Prompt window runs. Microsoft says it normally remains blank for about ten seconds, then closes and opens Microsoft Store automatically.
- Try the download again.
This resets Store’s local cache; it does not uninstall your apps. Do not close the blank window just because it appears inactive. If Store does not open after the window closes, launch it from Start and test again.
6. Repair the affected app, then reset it if necessary
Use Windows app settings for the app that fails. On current Windows 11 builds, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, select its menu, and open Advanced options. On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, and open its advanced options when available.
- Select Repair first, if the option is present.
- Open the app and retry the operation.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset.
- Open the app and sign in again if it asks.
Repair is the less disruptive choice. Reset can remove the app’s local settings or sign-in state, so use it after Repair and be prepared to configure the app again.
7. Reinstall the affected Store app
If only one app fails while other Store downloads work, reinstalling that app is more targeted than changing Windows services. Open Store, select Library, find the title, and choose the install option. If the app is already installed but damaged, uninstall it through Windows app settings first, restart if requested, then reinstall from Library.
Back up any app-specific local data before uninstalling. Store account purchases remain associated with the account, but an individual app may keep settings or saves in its own location.

8. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter on Windows 10
Windows 10 includes a dedicated troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Store apps. Open it, follow the prompts, and apply any correction it offers. Then restart Store and test the download.
The referenced procedure specifically places this option in Windows 10. If you do not see it on your Windows edition, continue with the other steps instead of downloading an unrelated troubleshooter.
9. Check Windows services only for the related service symptoms
Investigate services when the code is 0x80070422, Windows Update cannot be enabled, or starting a service produces Error 1058. A service change is more advanced than a cache reset because startup policy may be controlled by an administrator.
- Open the Windows services management screen and locate Windows Update.
- Check whether it is disabled and whether Windows allows it to start.
- Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and check its state in the same way.
- If either service is disabled, do not override a work or school policy. Ask the administrator to review the setting.
- After an allowed service starts, restart Windows and retry Store.
Error 1058 is a clue about service configuration, not proof that the original literal 0x8007422 has that meaning. If both services can start and Store still fails, return to the app-specific and network-policy checks rather than changing unrelated services.
10. Check registration and network policy on managed or restricted PCs
Microsoft Learn’s Store-download troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Store registration and confirming that firewall or proxy rules do not block the Microsoft endpoints Store needs. This matters on work and school computers, computers behind an enterprise proxy, and systems with restrictive security policies.
- Ask your administrator whether Microsoft Store is allowed for your device and account.
- Ask whether a proxy, firewall, DNS filter, or endpoint policy blocks Store download traffic.
- Do not disable security software or bypass organizational controls without authorization.
- If the organization permits it, the administrator can verify Store registration and the required endpoint rules using Microsoft’s documented procedures.
For a personal PC, temporarily changing network settings can make diagnosis harder. Capture the exact error first and restore any test setting after you finish.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems11. Use winget as an alternative package path when appropriate
For apps that are available through the Windows package catalog, an administrator or experienced user can try the Windows Package Manager from an elevated or approved command environment:
winget search <App name>
winget install <App name>
Replace <App name> with the actual application name. This is an alternative installation route, not a repair of Store itself. If the package is unavailable, restricted by policy, or requires Store licensing, the command may not solve the original problem.
12. Contact Microsoft Support with a useful record
Escalate when the ordered steps fail, the code returns after every restart, or Windows Update and services cannot be enabled. Before contacting support, preserve:
- The exact code as displayed, including whether it is
0x8007422or0x80070422. - Your Windows edition and build.
- The affected app or game and whether all Store downloads fail.
- Whether Store opens, whether Library updates work, and whether
wsreset.execompleted. - Any Windows Update message or Error 1058 text.
- Whether the computer is managed by an employer or school.
Microsoft’s consumer support page provides the Contact Support route. Giving support this record is more effective than reporting only that “Store does not work.”

What to do in common cases
“0x8007422 won’t let me download anything”
Test another app first. If every title fails, prioritize Windows updates, Store updates, wsreset.exe, and the managed-network check. If only one title fails, use Repair, Reset, or reinstall for that app before changing services.
“Minecraft shows 0x8007422 when I sign in”
Confirm the Microsoft account in Store and the account used by the game, then close and reopen both. Update Windows and Store, reset the Store cache, and repair the affected game app. If other Store downloads work, keep the investigation focused on the game’s app state and account rather than disabling Windows services.
“Store says I need to enable Microsoft Update services”
First verify whether the code is actually 0x80070422. If it is, check Windows Update and BITS for a disabled state and consider whether a work or school policy controls them. If the code is truly 0x8007422, the service interpretation is not established; complete the normal Store repair sequence and record the exact message for support.
Quick Recap
Mistakes that can make diagnosis harder
- Assuming
0x8007422and0x80070422are interchangeable without rereading the screen. - Changing service startup policies on a managed computer.
- Resetting every app when only one title fails.
- Uninstalling an app before checking whether it contains unsynchronized local data.
- Closing the blank Command Prompt immediately after starting
wsreset.exe. - Disabling firewall or proxy protections without recording and restoring the original configuration.
- Reporting only the code and omitting the Windows build, affected app, and whether all downloads fail.
