If Minecraft crashes before the main menu, first identify what is failing: the Launcher, Java Edition, Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), Microsoft Store/Xbox services, a modded profile, or the graphics driver. Restart Windows, disable overlays, test a clean profile, and repair the affected app before resetting or reinstalling it.
Back up your worlds before using Reset, uninstalling Minecraft for Windows, or removing Gaming Services. These steps can clear local app data or cached sign-in information.
For repeated Minecraft startup crashes, Outbyte PC Repair can scan system elements, temporary files, settings, and its app-crash log.

Identify what is crashing
| Symptom | Investigate first |
|---|---|
| Clicking the Launcher does nothing | Launcher files, Microsoft Store, sign-in, permissions, or corrupted app data |
| The Launcher opens, but Java crashes after Play | Mods, Java profile settings, custom JVM arguments, shaders, overlays, or the graphics driver |
| Minecraft for Windows reaches the Mojang screen and closes | Store app data, Gaming Services, Xbox sign-in, Bedrock cache, or the graphics driver |
| Both Java and Bedrock crash | Windows, drivers, overlays, security software, unstable hardware, or damaged system files |
| Only one modpack or profile crashes | A mod, loader, shader, resource pack, configuration file, or JVM argument |
| Only one world crashes | Possible world or chunk corruption; do not assume the whole installation is broken |
| The game crashes after sign-in, Marketplace, or Realms loads | Xbox identity, entitlement, network, account, or online-service interaction |
| The game works offline but crashes after sign-in | Treat account, network, Store, and online-content state as a separate diagnostic branch |
Java Edition and Minecraft for Windows are separate PC editions with different runtimes and requirements. Installing Java is not a general fix for Minecraft for Windows.
Before resetting or reinstalling: back up data
Bedrock worlds
If Minecraft for Windows still opens, export important worlds from inside the game. If it cannot open, make a precautionary copy of this commonly used local-world location:
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
%LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalStategamescom.mojangminecraftWorlds
- Press Win+R.
- Paste the path and press Enter.
- Copy the
minecraftWorldsfolder somewhere separate. - Keep an additional copy on external storage for valuable worlds.
The package path and accessibility can vary by Windows build and installation. This is primarily a precaution for local world data; it does not back up every Marketplace item, Realm, entitlement, or cloud-synchronized setting.
Java saves and profiles
Back up the saves folder and, preferably, the entire relevant Java game directory or Launcher profile. The location varies when a custom game directory is configured, so check the profile’s game-directory setting rather than deleting a universal .minecraft folder.
Fast, low-risk checks for either edition
- Close Minecraft, the Launcher, Xbox, and Microsoft Store.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- End stuck processes clearly associated with Minecraft, Java, the Launcher, Xbox, or Gaming Services.
- Restart Windows.
- Temporarily disable Xbox Game Bar recording, Discord overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, screen recorders, and antivirus game hooks.
- Test an unmodded, stable profile.
This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent requirement. If disabling an overlay fixes the crash, update or reconfigure that program rather than removing unrelated software indefinitely.
Update Windows, the Launcher, and Store components
Install pending updates for Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, Minecraft Launcher, and Minecraft for Windows. In Microsoft Store, open Library > Get updates on current Windows 11 builds. Windows 10 may show the equivalent under Downloads or Updates; Microsoft changes these labels periodically.
The official Minecraft download page provides the Launcher’s supported download and reinstall path. The Launcher manages game versions, profiles, updates, and supported Java installations. Ownership or entitlement is still required to play.

Microsoft’s published PC requirements list Windows 10 version 19041.0 or newer for Bedrock. They list 4 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended for Bedrock, while Java’s published requirements list 8 GB with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics, with 16 GB recommended. These are requirements, not a promise that every system configuration will be stable.
Windows 10 reached the end of normal free Windows Update support, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. That does not automatically make Minecraft incompatible, but current Launcher, Store, and driver support may not be identical to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s display-driver guidance for related support information.
Repair Minecraft for Windows and other Microsoft apps
Use Windows’ repair controls before resetting anything:
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find Minecraft for Windows, Minecraft Launcher, Xbox, Gaming Services, and Microsoft Store.
- Open each app’s Advanced options.
- Choose Terminate, if available, then Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Minecraft.
Microsoft documents these Store-app update, repair, reset, and reinstall options in its Microsoft Store troubleshooting guidance.
Use Reset only after backing up local data. Reset is more aggressive than Repair and may clear app data, downloaded content, settings, or cached sign-in state. Resetting the Launcher does not necessarily repair Minecraft for Windows, and reinstalling Minecraft for Windows does not necessarily repair Gaming Services.

Repair Gaming Services when Bedrock or Store launch fails
For Minecraft for Windows, Xbox, or Store installation failures, repair the components individually. If Gaming Services appears damaged, Microsoft Q&A guidance commonly recommends this administrator PowerShell sequence:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
Start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN
- Open PowerShell as Administrator.
- Copy the commands exactly; they remove and then open the Store page for the Gaming Services package.
- Install Gaming Services from the Store page.
- Restart Windows.
- Update Xbox and Minecraft, then test again.
This comes from Microsoft Q&A guidance, not a formal Mojang guarantee. Do not remove unrelated AppX packages. If the command errors or Microsoft Store will not open, stop and use Microsoft or Xbox support. You can also check the official Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool when it is available for your installation.
Fix Java Edition startup crashes
Java crashes are often profile-specific. Test the installation before reinstalling it:
- In the Launcher, create or select a completely vanilla profile.
- Temporarily rename or remove the profile’s
mods,shaderpacks, and suspicious resource-pack directories. - Remove custom JVM arguments temporarily.
- Test the latest stable release, not a snapshot or modded version.
- If necessary, test an older known-working release only as a diagnostic.
- If vanilla works, reintroduce mods one at a time or create a clean modpack instance.
Common causes include an incompatible Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge loader; a mod built for another Minecraft release; an incompatible shader; a corrupted configuration file; invalid memory settings; an outdated driver; an overlay; or an unstable overclock or undervolt.
Do not blindly increase allocated RAM. More allocation is not automatically better and can make the system less responsive. Restore the Launcher’s default memory setting unless the specific modpack documents a different requirement.

- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Read Java’s evidence
Check the crash report, latest.log, Launcher logs, and any hs_err_pid*.log file. Locations vary with the profile and game directory, so use the Launcher’s configured directory. A Java crash report can identify a mod or loader, while a JVM error log may indicate a runtime, driver, or hardware-level failure. EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION is a clue, not proof of one particular cause.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the graphics driver
Prioritize the GPU driver when the crash began after a driver update, the screen flashes or turns black, other 3D games also fail, the crash occurs as the game window initializes, or changing fullscreen and graphics settings changes the result.
- Restart the computer.
- Install a driver from the GPU or laptop manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- If the failure started immediately after an update, open Device Manager > Display adapters > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, when available.
- If normal updating fails, use the manufacturer’s clean-install option.
- Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
Windows’ graphics reset shortcut is Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. The screen may blink and a sound may play. It is a temporary diagnostic, not a replacement for correcting a bad driver. The newest driver is not always the right driver; timing determines whether update or rollback is more sensible.

If the game works until Microsoft-account sign-in, Marketplace, Realms, or multiplayer loads:
- Sign out of and back into the Launcher and Xbox app.
- Confirm that the signed-in Microsoft account owns the game or has the relevant entitlement.
- Update Xbox and Gaming Services.
- Disable overlays and recording tools.
- Test briefly with the network disconnected only as a diagnostic.
The official Minecraft PC page says to use the Microsoft account associated with the purchase. Offline-versus-online behavior can isolate an account, entitlement, network, Marketplace, or service interaction, but it does not prove that the account itself is corrupt. Do not delete worlds or reset Windows based solely on a sign-in symptom.

Use logs, Event Viewer, and Reliability Monitor
Event Viewer
- Press Win+R and run
eventvwr.msc. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find an error matching the crash time.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and timestamp.
Reliability Monitor
- Press Win+R.
- Run
perfmon /rel. - Select the red failure marker for Minecraft.
- Open the technical details and compare the time with your crash.
Minecraft.Windows.exe points toward Bedrock or its app layer; javaw.exe points toward Java Edition or its runtime; display-driver modules point toward the graphics subsystem. A Windows runtime DLL or system DLL can also appear when the broader OS, driver, or hardware is unstable. A faulting module is evidence for a hypothesis, not definitive proof of the root cause.
Escalate when other programs also crash
If browsers, other games, or Windows components fail too, repeated Minecraft reinstalls are unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Check recent GPU or CPU overclocks, XMP/EXPO memory settings, temperatures, disk health, free space, and antivirus quarantine history. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic if memory instability is suspected.
System-file repair may help when multiple applications fail, but verify the current Microsoft procedure before using these commands:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Do not jump to Reset this PC until application repair, driver testing, hardware checks, and backups are complete. Windows’ installation and removal troubleshooting guidance treats broader reinstallation measures as later escalation.

When to contact support
Provide support with:
- Windows version and edition;
- Minecraft edition and game version;
- Launcher version;
- GPU model and driver version;
- whether vanilla Java launches;
- whether both editions crash;
- the crash report, log, or Event Viewer details;
- the exact crash time and recent driver, Windows, mod, or hardware changes.
Avoid paid “Minecraft crash fixers,” registry cleaners, generic driver-updater subscriptions, and DLL-download sites. Buying Minecraft again rarely fixes a driver, mod, Store, Gaming Services, or corrupted-app problem. Use the official Launcher page and official support channels instead.
