First, identify which kind of co-op is failing: are you trying to play online with a friend somewhere else, or use local communication with someone nearby on another console? The checks differ. Minecraft Dungeons II supports online and couch co-op for up to four players, but the available Nintendo troubleshooting guidance is general—not a confirmed fix for a Dungeons II-specific connection bug.
Choose the right connection path
Minecraft’s official FAQ describes online cross-play and mixed co-op, and its launch announcement says the game supports up to four players in online or couch co-op. “Couch co-op” on one console is different from local communication between two nearby consoles: the latter requires the consoles to connect to each other.

Use this distinction to choose what to test first:
| Play path | Who you are connecting to | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Online co-op | A remote friend over the internet | Update the game, test the Switch 2 internet connection and note its NAT type. If only one friend cannot join, have them test too. |
| Local communication | A nearby player on another console | Update both consoles and the game on both, use distinct Nintendo Accounts, and retry local communication. |
| Couch co-op on one console | Another player sharing the same console | This is not communication between two consoles, so the local-communication checks do not apply. |
The game’s FAQ establishes support for these play modes, but the sources available here do not specify exact invitation or lobby menu steps. For the official mode descriptions, see Minecraft’s launch announcement and About Dungeons II.
Start with updates on both consoles
Before changing network settings, check for game updates on both players’ consoles. For local communication, update both consoles’ system software as well, then retry. Nintendo’s Switch 2 local-communication instructions specifically call for current system and game software on both consoles.
#1 Best Overall
- Drop the pickaxe, grab a sword, and charge into a thrilling new adventure in the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition
- Check for a Minecraft Dungeons II update on each console.
- For local communication, check for system updates on both consoles.
- After updating, retry the same co-op mode that failed.
Nintendo’s instruction is explicit: “Check for any available software updates for the game on both consoles.” The separate Minecraft Help article about Bedrock multiplayer also identifies outdated versions as a possible multiplayer issue in that game context; it is not evidence of a Dungeons II-specific cause or fix.
For online co-op, test the internet connection and NAT type
On the Switch 2, run the console’s internet connection test and note the NAT type and connection speeds. Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance is general advice, not a Dungeons II network specification. It describes NAT A as generally favorable and NAT B as compatible with most other NAT types. NAT D is not optimal and generally can connect only with NAT A; NAT F indicates restricted communication that generally prevents connecting to other players.

- Fight against a new, challenging threat that puts your combat skills to the test like never before.
- Craft the perfect hero with legendary gear, including a wide range of weapons, armor, and artifacts.
Use the result as a clue rather than a guarantee: the test does not prove that a particular NAT type caused this game’s problem. Nintendo’s full explanation is in Unable to Connect With Others Online.
If only one friend cannot join
Ask that friend to run the same connection test and check their NAT type. If other friends can join you, this comparison helps establish whether the issue is isolated to one connection rather than affecting every player.

If no friends can join
If the problem affects every player, look next at the local network or router. Nintendo’s guidance includes checking router firmware and comparing wired and wireless conditions; if the problem persists, follow Nintendo’s instructions or contact the router manufacturer or your internet service provider. Avoid changing router settings blindly or treating port forwarding or custom DNS as established first-line fixes for this game.
For nearby consoles, test local communication separately
If the other player is nearby and using a second console, follow Nintendo’s local-communication checks rather than diagnosing it as online matchmaking:
Rank #4
- Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- Each player should use a distinct Nintendo Account.
- Both consoles should have current system and game software.
- Both consoles should be able to connect to the internet.
Retry local communication after those checks. If local play also fails in multiple games, Nintendo’s guide points toward a console communication issue. If another local multiplayer game works, the problem may require software-specific troubleshooting for Minecraft Dungeons II.
See Nintendo’s Switch 2 local-communication troubleshooting guide for its complete instructions.

Try a wired connection only as a diagnostic
A wired test can help distinguish a wireless-network problem from a broader connection issue, but it is optional and is not a proven fix for Minecraft Dungeons II. Nintendo says the Switch 2 must be docked for wired networking. If the dock being used has no LAN port, a USB LAN adapter can be used for the test. Follow Nintendo’s setup guidance at Unable to connect to the Internet when starting software; do not assume an adapter is required for every setup.
What these checks can—and cannot—establish
The official sources confirm Dungeons II co-op modes, while Nintendo’s articles describe general online matchmaking and Switch 2 local-communication troubleshooting. They do not document a Dungeons II-specific Switch 2 connection bug, error code, outage, or guaranteed remedy. If updates and the relevant connection checks do not resolve the problem, use the game’s official support channels for title-specific help rather than applying unrelated Minecraft Bedrock settings or assuming a router change will fix it.
