First identify where startup stops: the Minecraft Launcher may fail to open, sign-in or updating may fail inside the Launcher, or the game may fail after you click Play. Those are different problems, so work through the checks that match your failure rather than trying a security bypass or system tweak at random.
1. Identify what is not opening
Note the last step that works and any exact error message. Minecraft’s official guidance treats a Launcher that will not open as a reason to check for updates or contact Support; its Launcher troubleshooting guidance also recommends reinstalling the Launcher. Start with the branch that fits what you see:
- The Launcher does not appear: Check for a Launcher update, then reinstall it from Minecraft’s official download page.
- The Launcher opens, but sign-in or access fails: Check that you are signed in to the Microsoft account that owns the Minecraft license.
- The Launcher opens, but updating fails: Use Minecraft’s official download and troubleshooting guidance to check for updates or reinstall the Launcher.
- The game fails after you click Play: Record the error and check that your macOS version and Mac hardware meet Minecraft’s current requirements. The Launcher reinstall and license-account checks are not established fixes for every crash that happens after Play.
Minecraft says the Launcher works with Microsoft and Xbox services to validate a Minecraft license and provide access to features such as Realms and parental controls. That makes account verification relevant to an access or license error, but it does not explain a crash before the Launcher appears. See Minecraft’s Launcher troubleshooting guidance.
2. Update or reinstall the Launcher from Minecraft
Get the Mac Launcher through Minecraft’s official download page, which also links to installation and troubleshooting information. Check for an available Launcher update; if the Launcher still will not open or behaves incorrectly, reinstall it using the official download route. A fresh installation can refresh Launcher files, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a game crash after Play.

Avoid third-party Launcher installers presented as a general repair. Minecraft notes that games can be launched without using the Launcher, but that is not a universal beginner workaround: use another launch method only if you already have a supported official method for your edition.
3. Check the Microsoft account when access fails
If the Launcher opens but says you do not own the game or cannot access it, sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the Minecraft license. If you use more than one Microsoft account, verify which one is active in the Launcher before reinstalling or changing macOS security settings.

4. Respond to macOS security warnings based on the exact alert
Gatekeeper is a macOS security feature, not simply a startup obstacle. Apple’s guidance on opening apps safely recommends checking for an updated app or contacting its developer when macOS cannot verify an app. Apple calls the App Store the safest place to get Mac apps; for Minecraft, use the official Minecraft download page.
If macOS says it cannot check an app for malicious software, Apple documents a temporary, app-specific override only when you trust the source and believe the app has not been altered. After attempting to open it, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, find the security message, choose Open Anyway if available, then review the renewed warning before confirming. The option may be unavailable on a Mac managed by an organization.

Do not lower Mac security settings globally to troubleshoot Minecraft. Do not treat a message that an app will damage your computer, or that it is damaged, as the same kind of warning: Apple says these alerts can reflect detected malicious content, revoked authorization, modification, corruption, or tampering. Stop and obtain a fresh copy from the official source or contact the developer rather than bypassing that warning.
5. Check macOS and Mac hardware support

Minecraft Help states that, as of March 2025, macOS 10.15 or later is required to access online play and continue receiving Minecraft updates through the Launcher. If your Mac runs an earlier version, it falls below that stated support threshold for those features. See Minecraft: Java Edition System Requirements.

Java Edition hardware targets
Minecraft’s Java Edition requirements article, published July 21, 2026, lists these targets. They are Minecraft’s stated technical targets, not a guarantee that every Mac matching a memory figure will launch or run well.

Minecraft says some older Intel-based Macs may be below its updated recommendations. It also warns that support may change as Java Edition transitions away from OpenGL toward Vulkan. Check the exact Mac model and current Java Edition requirements; do not decide to replace a Mac based on the listed memory or graphics figures alone.

6. Contact Minecraft Support with useful details
If the official update or reinstall and the relevant account check do not solve the problem, contact Minecraft Support. Include the details that identify the failure stage and the setup:
- Your macOS version and Mac model or chip.
- Whether the Launcher fails to appear, sign-in or updating fails, or the game fails after Play.
- The exact alert or error text.
- Whether the problem began after a macOS update, Launcher update, or fresh installation, if known.
These details can help distinguish a Launcher, account, security, or compatibility issue; they do not guarantee a particular fix.
