If your FFmpeg YouTube livestream has video but no sound, first check whether the input contains an audio stream. If it does, inspect FFmpeg’s output mapping and make sure -an is not disabling audio. If the outgoing stream includes audio but YouTube reports an error, use the Live Control Room message to check codec, stream count, channels, sample rate, and bitrate.
1. Check whether FFmpeg receives audio
Run your usual FFmpeg command and read the stream listing after each Input #... line. The intended source should show an Audio: stream. The output listing should also show an audio stream.
- No audio listed for the input: FFmpeg cannot map audio that is not present in that input. Check the selected input or capture device and the source application’s audio routing. Confirm that FFmpeg opened the intended source.
- Input has audio, but output does not: inspect the mapping and output options. FFmpeg documents
-anas an output option that disables audio recording, including automatic selection or mapping. A missing or incorrect-mapcan also leave out the intended stream.
For the documented behavior of stream selection, mapping, and -an, see the FFmpeg documentation.
2. Map the intended audio stream
If the first input contains the audio you want, -map 0:a:0 selects its first audio stream. The matching video mapping in a simple one-input command is -map 0:v:0. With multiple inputs, change the input index to the one that actually contains the desired stream. Filter graphs can affect which outputs need mapping, so adapt the example to your full command.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -i INPUT -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested configuration for every source or encoder. Replace INPUT, video settings, server URL, and stream key with your own values. Keep the stream key private. Check the entire command for an output-scoped -an that might suppress audio, and confirm the output summary actually lists the intended audio stream.
3. Match the outgoing audio to YouTube’s requirements
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. The same guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current recommendations and details.

YouTube’s live streaming error messages cover unsupported audio codecs, no audio stream, multiple audio streams, incorrect sample rate or bitrate, and too many audio channels. For the error described there, YouTube specifies mono or stereo (one or two channels). Match your fix to the actual health message rather than changing unrelated video settings.
4. Test the whole path before going public
- Start a private or unlisted test stream using the same FFmpeg command and audio source planned for the live event.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check stream health and error messages.
- Verify playback on the test stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health.
If the output summary includes audio but the YouTube preview does not, use the health message to distinguish an ingestion problem from an encoder problem. If the preview works but the live page does not, verify playback in the test stream before changing a configuration that is already sending audio.

Troubleshoot by where the audio disappears
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
No Audio: line in the input listing |
Selected source, capture device, and source application’s audio routing | Make the source deliver audio to FFmpeg, then inspect the input listing again. |
| Input lists audio; output does not | Output-scoped -an, missing or wrong -map, incorrect input index, or filter graph outputs |
Map the intended audio stream and confirm it appears in the output summary. |
| Output lists audio; YouTube reports an audio error | Live Control Room health message, number of audio streams, codec, channel count, sample rate, and bitrate | Correct the setting named by the error and test again. |
| Audio stream is present but sounds silent | Source levels and routing | Listen to a local recording or monitor output if your workflow supports it; the stream listing alone cannot establish that the signal contains audible sound. |
| Audio works locally but not on the live page | Encoder output, YouTube preview and health, and viewer playback | Compare each stage in a test stream before changing the encoder. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a different approach from troubleshooting a live FFmpeg capture: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
