Those three layers can mute music independently: a game may have Music at zero while effects still play, Windows may have muted only the game, or the game may be sending sound to a different speaker, headset, USB device, or HDMI display. Use the sequence below to identify whether the fault is limited to one game or affects Windows audio generally before changing drivers or reinstalling anything.
Use this order before changing drivers
Work from the most local, reversible setting to the broadest system change. Keep the game running when checking Windows controls so its process appears in the mixer.

- Check the game’s separate Music and Master controls, plus mute and minimize-related options.
- Open Windows Volume Mixer and unmute the game, raise its level, and inspect its app-specific output device.
- Confirm that Windows itself is using the speakers or headphones you intend to hear.
- Compare the affected game with another game and a non-game app to determine the scope.
- Temporarily disable audio enhancements and test again.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter.
- If only an app is affected, restart the Windows Audio services.
- Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver only after the simpler checks.
- For a single Steam installation, verify the game’s files as a platform-specific repair step.
A normal-looking taskbar speaker icon does not prove that the game is routed correctly. Windows can keep system volume at a normal level while an individual app is muted, assigned a different output, affected by enhancements, or blocked by a driver problem.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUnderstand which audio layer is failing
Music can disappear while dialogue and effects continue because a game often exposes independent channels. Windows adds another volume and routing layer on top of the game, and the audio driver and physical connection sit below both.

| What you observe | Most useful layer to check first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Only music is silent; effects and dialogue work | Game Music slider, music mute option, or audio profile | The game may be mixing music independently from other channels. Exact labels differ by title. |
| Every sound in one game is silent; other apps work | Windows per-app mixer, app output device, then the game’s Audio menu | The game process may be muted or routed away from the normal system output. |
| Several games or apps are silent | Windows output selection, mute state, enhancements, services, and driver | A shared Windows audio layer is more likely than one title’s settings. |
| Sound works through one device but not another | Selected output, connections, and the affected device’s app routing | USB, HDMI, and display outputs can be selected independently or disconnected. |
This table is a diagnostic framework, not proof of a cause. Test another game and a non-game app to decide which branch to follow.
Step 1: Check the game’s own music controls
Raise Music and Master separately
Open the title’s Audio, Sound, or similarly named options menu. Set Music above zero and raise Master volume. Do not assume that increasing Master will restore a channel whose individual Music slider is muted. If effects and dialogue are audible, this separate control is the first thing to inspect.
Look for mute and focus options
Check for a music-enabled checkbox, a global mute button, and an option such as Mute when minimized or Mute when unfocused. Restore the game’s window focus, unmute it, and test a scene that normally contains music. These settings are not universal: an unnamed game may use different labels, place them under an advanced submenu, or provide an audio profile that overrides individual sliders.
Apply and retest correctly
Choose Apply, Save, or the equivalent control if the game requires it. Some games update audio immediately; others need a return to the main menu or a restart. If the game’s controls look correct but only that title remains silent, continue to the Windows mixer rather than repeatedly changing the same sliders.
Step 2: Unmute the game in Windows Volume Mixer
Windows 11 path
- Leave the game running.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Under the apps section, find the game by its title or process label.
- Raise its volume and make sure its speaker control is not muted.
Microsoft documents that app-level volume can override the main system volume. Steam Support likewise advises checking whether the individual game is muted. A taskbar volume level can therefore look normal while the game remains silent.
Windows 10 path
- Keep the game open.
- Right-click the taskbar volume icon.
- Open Volume mixer.
- Find the game, clear its mute state, and raise its slider.
Labels and layout can vary by Windows build, but the important control is the game’s individual channel, not only the master slider.
Check the app’s output device in the mixer
In Windows 11’s Volume mixer, inspect the game’s Output device as well as its volume. An app can use a different device from the system default. If the game is assigned to an HDMI display without speakers, a disconnected USB headset, or another output you are not wearing, its level can appear normal while you hear nothing.
Step 3: Select the intended Windows output
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under output, select the speakers or headphones you actually want to use.
- Play a sound from another app, then return to the game.
- Recheck Volume Mixer because the game may retain its own output assignment.
Multiple connected outputs are a common source of confusion. USB headsets, motherboard audio, HDMI or DisplayPort monitors, Bluetooth devices, and docking stations can all appear as separate endpoints. A display may be selected even though it has no speakers. Selecting the correct system output does not automatically change an app that has its own device assignment, so verify both places.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Check connections before treating this as a software fault
Confirm that a headset plug is fully inserted, the physical headset mute switch is off, and powered speakers are on. For USB audio, try another USB port as part of connection diagnosis. Microsoft’s general Windows audio guidance includes checking connections and trying another USB port; that advice does not establish that replacement hardware is necessary.
Step 4: Determine whether the problem is limited to one game
Run a controlled comparison
- Play the affected game and note whether music, effects, and dialogue differ.
- Launch another game and test its audio.
- Play a non-game source such as a local video or browser clip.
If only one title is affected, prioritize that game’s settings, Windows’ per-app entry, and its installation files. If several games or ordinary apps are silent, move to Windows-wide checks. The comparison organizes troubleshooting; it does not by itself prove which component failed.
Only music is missing
Return to the game’s Music slider, music-enabled toggle, and any profile or accessibility preset that changes the mix. General Windows guidance cannot specify an unnamed game’s controls. If those settings are correct and effects remain audible, consult that game’s official support documentation for title-specific audio profiles, configuration files, or known issues rather than assuming a Windows driver problem.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →All audio in one game is missing
Check the game’s Volume Mixer level and app-specific output device, then its own Audio menu. For a Steam installation, file verification is a reasonable next step after those checks. It is a platform-specific repair suggestion, not a guaranteed fix or proof that corrupted files caused the silence.
Several apps or games are missing audio
Use the Windows branch: verify the selected output and mute state, disable enhancements temporarily, run the troubleshooter, restart the audio services if needed, and then address the driver. This order avoids making a system-wide change when the fault is only a game setting.
Step 5: Disable audio enhancements temporarily
Microsoft notes that audio enhancements can cause sound problems. Turn them off temporarily for the selected output, then launch the game and test music.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the active output device.
- Find the enhancements or signal-processing option; the exact label depends on the Windows build and driver.
- Choose the disabled or off setting, apply it, and test the game.
This is a diagnostic change, not a permanent recommendation. If music returns, leave enhancements off while you identify which effect or driver feature conflicts with the game. If nothing changes, restore the previous setting before continuing unless you prefer the unprocessed output.

Step 6: Run Windows’ audio troubleshooter
On current Windows 11 builds, Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Audio. Microsoft also directs Windows 11 users to the Get Help troubleshooter. Navigation can differ by build, so use the Sound or Troubleshoot search in Settings if the labels are not identical.

- Close unnecessary audio applications while leaving the affected game available for testing if the troubleshooter requests it.
- Start the Audio troubleshooter or Get Help flow.
- Allow it to inspect the selected output, mute state, and audio components.
- Apply a proposed correction only after reading what it will change.
- Restart the game and test music, then test another app.
The troubleshooter may identify a disabled device or configuration error, but no automated step is guaranteed to restore sound. If it reports no problem, continue with the service and driver checks rather than repeating the same scan.
Step 7: Restart Windows audio services for app-specific failures
Microsoft documents restarting Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder when an app has an audio problem. This can clear a service state that survives changes to a game’s sliders and the mixer.
- Save work and close the game.
- Open the Windows Services management tool.
- Locate Windows Audio, choose Restart, and wait for it to finish.
- Locate Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart it if Windows presents that option.
- Reopen the game and test music before changing other settings.
Service names and available actions can vary slightly by Windows edition. Restarting these services affects system audio temporarily; it does not reinstall the game or erase its settings.
Step 8: Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver
Driver work should come after volume, routing, enhancement, troubleshooter, and service checks because it is broader and can introduce a new configuration problem. Microsoft’s audio guidance includes updating drivers and explains reinstall and rollback options.
Update first
Check Windows Update and the support page for your PC, motherboard, headset, or sound-device manufacturer. Prefer the manufacturer’s official driver source when reinstalling. Install the driver intended for your exact Windows edition and device, restart the computer, and test both the affected game and another app.
Roll back when a recent update caused the fault
If music worked until a driver change and the device’s properties expose a rollback option, use that documented rollback path, restart, and retest. Record the driver version before changing it so you can identify whether the change helped.
Reinstall only when simpler fixes fail
A reinstall can rebuild a damaged driver installation, but it may remove vendor-specific enhancements or reset output assignments. Disconnecting or uninstalling the wrong device can leave you without the intended output until Windows reinstalls a compatible driver. Confirm the device name and have the manufacturer’s driver available before proceeding.

- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game and test music.
This is a sensible platform-specific repair step when only one Steam installation is affected. The cited guidance is a community Microsoft Q&A response rather than an official Steam policy page, so treat verification as a possible repair, not a guaranteed cause or outcome. It may reacquire changed or missing files; it does not correct a muted Windows app, a wrong output device, or a game setting at zero.

Common symptoms and the correct branch
“The taskbar volume is fine, but the game has no sound”
Open Volume Mixer while the game is running. Check the game’s mute state, slider, and output device. Then inspect the game’s own Audio menu. The taskbar icon reports system-level state and may not show an app-specific mute or route.
“Effects play, but music does not”
Do not begin with drivers. Recheck the game’s Music slider, music mute toggle, audio profile, and minimize/focus behavior. If the controls are correct, use the title’s official support channel because generic Windows pages cannot document every game’s mixer.
“The game is silent only when my monitor is connected”
Inspect both Windows output and the app-specific output. HDMI or DisplayPort can become the selected endpoint even when the monitor has no speakers. Select the speakers or headset you can hear and retest.
“A headset works, but speakers do not”
Select the speakers explicitly in Settings > System > Sound, verify their connection and power, and inspect the game’s app output assignment. If the speakers are USB, try another USB port as a connection test. Do not buy replacement hardware based solely on this symptom; first establish whether Windows detects and can test the existing device.
“Every game and app is silent”
Follow the Windows-wide path: selected output, mute state, enhancements, troubleshooter, audio services, and driver. A game-specific file check is unlikely to address a failure that appears in unrelated apps.
When to use the game’s official support
Escalate to the game’s official support documentation when one title remains affected after its Music and Master controls, Windows mixer, output routing, and—if applicable—file verification have been checked. Include the game version, launcher, Windows version, output device, whether effects and dialogue work, and which comparisons succeeded. Those details distinguish a music-channel setting from an app-level or system-wide fault.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not present an unnamed game’s menu path as universal. Labels such as Audio, Sound, Music, Master, mute, and minimize behavior vary by title, edition, and update.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that version. The volume and troubleshooting paths above may still exist on an installed Windows 10 system, but current guidance and future driver availability should be checked against the Windows version and device you actually use.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Music is enabled and its slider is above zero in the game.
- Master volume and any game mute or minimize option are correct.
