How to Fix Mod Mismatch Errors on an ARK Server (Evolved and Ascended)

By VGSources Team 9 min read

ARK’s “mod version mismatch” or connection refusal message means the server and your game client do not have an identical mod set. Every mod must be present on both sides, at the same version, and in the same load order. Fix the side that is out of sync: update and correctly declare the server’s mods, or clear and redownload stale client files. If configuration and files are correct but one mod still will not load, old save data may be rejecting it.

Use the server-owner procedure if you administer the machine; use the player procedure if you are joining someone else’s server. The configuration examples below label ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended separately because their mod settings are not interchangeable.

What a mod mismatch actually means

A mod mismatch is not simply a warning that you are missing a subscription. The server sends its required mod identifiers and content, then compares them with the client’s installed Workshop files. A join can fail when a mod is absent, has changed since the server last updated, is corrupted locally, or appears in a different order. A server that declares no active mods can also reject a client that is trying to connect with mods enabled.

When the sets disagree, symptoms include a version-error dialog, invisible creatures or structures, a forced-download loop, or an immediate connection refusal. The oneSubnet documentation states that the server must have exactly the same mods as clients, in the same order. Treat that as the target state rather than repeatedly clicking Join.

Ask the administrator for the exact server mod list and the edition being run. A procedure for Evolved will not repair an Ascended configuration, and a client cannot correct a server whose files were never updated.

Server-owner repair sequence

Perform these steps during a maintenance window. Keep the server offline until all updates finish so clients do not download a half-updated set.

1. Stop the server cleanly

Use the normal control panel stop/restart control or the service script supplied with your dedicated installation. Do not edit configuration files while the server process is writing them. If the panel offers a backup, create one before making changes.

2. Update and validate the dedicated server

For a SteamCMD-managed ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated server, the ARK wiki documents this command:

app_update 376030 validate

Run it against the installation used by the service, not a second test directory. Validation replaces missing or damaged server files. Managed hosts expose an equivalent update or validate action in their control panel; use that control rather than running SteamCMD against an unrelated path.

3. Update every Workshop mod used by the server

Update the complete mod set, not only the mod named in the error. The official ARK documentation describes -automanagedmods and [ModInstaller] ModIDS entries for obtaining Workshop content. Those mechanisms install files; they do not by themselves activate a mod for play. The active list still has to be declared in the server settings.

If you use automatic management, let the download finish before restarting. A restart during an update can leave a directory containing an incomplete version and produce a mismatch that looks like a client problem.

4. Check the active-mod declaration in Evolved

For ARK: Survival Evolved, open:

ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.ini

Some providers place the file in a different root, but the filename and WindowsServer configuration role are the same. Find the ActiveMods setting and use numeric Workshop IDs separated by commas:

ActiveMods=111111111,222222222,333333333
  • Use the numeric Workshop IDs, not mod names or URLs.
  • Do not put spaces between IDs.
  • Do not add a trailing comma.
  • Keep the IDs in the intended load order; order is part of the compatibility check.

Remove duplicate entries and IDs for mods that are no longer installed. If a control panel has a separate “Active Mods” field, ensure it writes the same list instead of overwriting the INI on every restart.

5. Configure Ascended with its own setting

ARK: Survival Ascended does not use the Evolved ActiveMods example as its universal method. The managed-host guidance distinguishes Ascended by using ActiveModOverrides or the provider’s Mod IDs field. Enter the IDs through the setting your provider documents for Ascended, then preserve the displayed order. Do not paste an Evolved line into an Ascended configuration and assume it was accepted.

6. Restart and read the console or log

Start the server only after the update and configuration save are complete. Watch startup output for a Mod ... loaded line for every expected ID. Treat Failed to load mod as a server-side failure, even if the panel reports that the mod is installed. Record the ID named beside the failure; it identifies the next file or configuration check.

7. Let clients reconnect after startup completes

Tell players to wait until the server has finished loading the complete list and is accepting connections. If players join during Workshop installation or before the restart has completed, some clients can cache a different state and continue receiving mismatch errors.

Player-side repair sequence

These steps apply when the administrator confirms that the server’s list, versions, and order are correct.

1. Match the server’s list exactly

Obtain the administrator’s current mod IDs or names and subscribe to every item. An unsubscribed client may be blocked when the server attempts a forced download. Remove assumptions based on an old screenshot or a previous wipe; the active list can change independently of your saved subscription list.

2. Close ARK and Steam completely

Exit the game, then exit Steam rather than leaving it minimized in the notification area. Workshop updates can remain pending while the client is running. Reopen Steam, allow queued downloads to finish, and only then launch ARK.

3. Redownload only the affected mod first

If the server log or administrator identifies one failing ID, compare that ID and its Workshop update state with your local subscription. Unsubscribe from that mod, close Steam again, and remove its local directory under:

ARK/ShooterGame/Content/Mods

The exact library root depends on where ARK is installed. Delete only the affected mod’s files when the problem is isolated; preserving the rest of the cache avoids unnecessary downloads and makes the cause easier to identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Perform a complete clean redownload when the whole set is stale

If several mods mismatch or the client repeatedly reports old versions, unsubscribe from the server’s affected mods, remove their local files from ShooterGame/Content/Mods, restart Steam, subscribe again, and let every download and installation finish. Start ARK only after Steam shows no pending Workshop activity.

A Steam Community report describes this unsubscribe-and-delete approach and says that joining can trigger server-consistent downloads. That report is anecdotal: heavily modded servers may require several join attempts, and success is not guaranteed if the server itself is still misconfigured. Do not use repeated attempts as a substitute for confirming that the server has completed its update.

5. Rejoin once, then inspect the result

Connect after the clean download. If the same ID fails, capture the exact message and give it to the administrator. Repeating the entire deletion procedure without identifying the mod can erase useful evidence and lengthen the download.

When the files and settings look right but the mod still fails

Host Havoc Technical Support identifies three common causes for Evolved mods that do not load: the files are not installed, ActiveMods is wrong, or old saved data rejects the mod. Check those in that order because the first two are reversible and do not risk the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the installation

  • Confirm that the server’s mod directory contains the expected files and that the Workshop update completed without an error.
  • Compare the numeric ID in the directory, the active configuration, and the administrator’s published list.
  • Check startup output for the ID’s successful load line rather than relying only on a control-panel status badge.

Verify the declaration and order

Re-open the edition-appropriate setting after the restart. In Evolved, inspect ActiveMods for spaces, a trailing comma, a text name, a duplicate, or an incorrect order. In Ascended, inspect ActiveModOverrides or the provider’s Mod IDs field instead. A panel may regenerate an INI, so check the file that the running service actually reads.

Investigate save-data compatibility

Some mods work on a new world but fail when an existing save contains data from a removed or changed version. Before any destructive operation, stop the server and copy the world, player, and tribe save files to a separate location. Keep more than one backup if the world matters.

Only after a verified backup should you test a clean-save remedy recommended by your provider. Resetting saved data can remove progress and may not fix a genuinely wrong mod ID. A safe diagnostic is to launch a temporary new save with the same mod list; if the mod loads there, the original save is implicated. Restore the backup if the test does not solve the issue.

Self-hosted versus managed servers

Self-hosted

You control SteamCMD, the service account, the Workshop cache, and the exact files read at startup. Verify that your update command targets the same installation directory used by the launch script. Check file permissions and startup logs directly. If a script rewrites GameUserSettings.ini, correct the script or environment variable as well as the generated file.

Managed hosting

The panel may hide the filesystem and expose separate fields for mod IDs, automatic mod management, and server restart. Enter IDs in the panel’s documented field, save, run its update action, and perform a full restart. If the panel shows “installed” but the log says Failed to load mod, send the provider the failing ID and timestamp; the status label alone does not prove that the running process loaded it.

Common mistakes that keep the mismatch alive

  • Updating the client only: A newer client mod cannot make an older server copy compatible. Update the server and restart it first.
  • Installing without activating: Automatic Workshop installation does not replace the active-mod declaration.
  • Using names instead of IDs: The Evolved setting requires numeric IDs separated by commas.
  • Changing order casually: Two identical lists in different orders are still mismatched.
  • Leaving Steam open: Pending Workshop work may not finish while ARK or Steam is still running.
  • Deleting every mod immediately: Start with the single failing ID when the error is isolated.
  • Resetting a save without a backup: A clean save can cost world and player progress and should be a late diagnostic step.
  • Confusing editions: Evolved’s ActiveMods example does not establish the correct Ascended setting.
  • Joining during maintenance: Reconnect only after the server log shows the expected mods loaded.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Ask whether the failure affects one player, one mod, or everyone.
  2. Confirm whether the server is Evolved or Ascended.
  3. Have the administrator publish the current numeric IDs and order.
  4. If everyone fails, stop the server, update/validate the dedicated installation, update every mod, correct the edition-specific declaration, and restart.
  5. If one player fails, close Steam and ARK, finish Workshop downloads, then clean-redownload the affected mod.
  6. Read startup output for a successful load line for each ID.
  7. If the files and settings are correct, back up saves and test whether the existing save rejects the mod.

Bottom line

Fixing an ARK mod mismatch is a synchronization job: the server and every client need the same mod IDs, versions, and order. Server owners should update the dedicated files and Workshop content, declare the list with the correct edition-specific setting, verify each load in the log, and restart before players reconnect. Players should subscribe to that exact list, finish Steam’s downloads, and clean-redownload only the stale files first. Save-data changes come last, with backups made before any reset.
