Put every player on tModLoader, match the exact build, distribute one shared modpack, update the server using its actual deployment method, then use the server log to identify any remaining mod or network error.

What the syncing stage is checking
When a tModLoader client joins, the server compares the enabled content on both sides. The documented SyncMods exchange sends mod identifiers from the server. If downloading is permitted, the client requests the files, reloads its mods, and sends SyncMods again. A screen that appears frozen at “syncing mods” therefore does not identify one specific fault. It can indicate a missing download, a disabled download setting, a broken dependency, or content that does not match between client and server.

Treat the syncing label as the point at which the connection exposed a problem, not as the diagnosis. The first line naming a mod, dependency, file, or stack trace is normally the best next investigation target.

Fix the connection in the correct order

Confirm that everyone launched tModLoader
Close the game and launcher session that started vanilla Terraria. Every participant, including the host, must start the tModLoader installation. A vanilla client cannot join a tModLoader server, even when the world itself contains no unusual content. Check the title or main menu before attempting to connect; do not rely on a desktop shortcut with an ambiguous name.

Match the tModLoader build exactly
Record the complete tModLoader build displayed in the client’s main menu. Ask the server operator to copy the build shown in the dedicated-server console or log. The two strings must match exactly, not merely share a major version. A Steam update can leave a server installation behind its clients, producing a mismatch immediately after players update.
If the server is behind a Steam update, install the server release corresponding to the clients, then restart it. If the clients were updated first and you cannot update the server yet, temporarily run the client build that matches the server instead of mixing releases. Do not troubleshoot individual mods until this comparison succeeds.

Build one shared modpack
The host should save the currently enabled mods as a modpack and provide that pack to every player. In tModLoader, use the mod-pack management screen to save the enabled set, have each player import or enable that same pack, and wait for the reload to finish before joining. The pack must represent the same mod versions and the same load order for everyone.
Manual lists are fragile: two entries can have similar display names while pointing to different Workshop identities or versions. A shared pack gives the server and clients a reproducible list. After enabling it, open the mods list and verify that the expected entries are enabled; a pack that was imported but not activated does not change the running configuration.

Reload before connecting
tModLoader must reload after mods are enabled, disabled, or changed. Wait for that operation to complete on every client. Joining during a reload can leave stale metadata in memory and make the next sync appear to hang. Once all players have finished reloading, close and reopen the multiplayer screen and connect again.

Update the server according to its deployment method
For a native installation or a managed server panel, install the tModLoader release that matches the clients, place the server’s mod files or modpack in that installation, and restart the server process. A running process does not automatically adopt newly installed binaries or mods.

The Dedicated Server Utils documentation specifically instructs operators to rebuild so the image pulls the new tModLoader build. Restarting an old container without rebuilding can leave the server on the previous build even though the host configuration looks current. After the rebuild, start a fresh container and confirm its console reports the expected version.

Verify server-side dependencies
Many content mods require library or framework mods. Install and enable every required dependency on the server, not just on the player’s computer. Check the server log for a named missing dependency or a load-order error before attempting another connection.
Workshop installation is identity-based; it does not identify a mod reliably from the text of its display name. Use the shared modpack or the server-management tooling to install Workshop content rather than copying files or selecting items solely because their names look alike. This avoids loading a similarly named project, an obsolete version, or a file that the server cannot associate with the requested Workshop item.

Remove extra or client-only mods
If the build and shared pack match but one or more players are still rejected, compare each player’s enabled list with the host’s list. Disable client-side-only or extra mods one at a time, reload, and retry. Quality-of-life or visual additions that are not present for the rest of the group can still alter the synchronization set or trigger a load failure.

Change one item per test and record the result. Removing several mods at once may make the connection work but leaves you unable to identify which item caused the conflict. Once the offending entry is known, check whether the mod has a server-compatible release or must remain disabled for multiplayer.

Read the server log, then perform a clean retry
Open the server console or log immediately after a failed attempt. Look for the first meaningful error rather than the final cascade of “connection closed” messages. A mod name, dependency name, file path, or stack-trace location gives you a concrete target. If the log points to a network or download operation instead, investigate access and download settings before changing the mod list.
After correcting a version, mod, dependency, or setting, restart both the server and every client. The restart clears the old mod metadata and ensures that the corrected files are loaded on both sides. Then enable the shared pack, wait for the reload, and try one connection before inviting the rest of the group.
How to compare versions without guessing
Use the same evidence source on both ends: the client’s main-menu build string and the server’s startup console or log. Do not infer the server version from the operating system, the Steam library’s last-update date, or a Docker tag alone. Write the two values next to each other and compare every component. If they differ, stop there and align them before investigating mods.
When a server is managed by someone else, send the operator the exact client build and ask for the corresponding server build. If the operator cannot provide a build string, the log from a fresh restart should; a server that does not clearly identify its release is difficult to troubleshoot because every later error may be a compatibility symptom.

Why a modpack is safer than a hand-maintained list
A hand-maintained list requires every player to find the same Workshop item, choose a compatible version, enable it, and preserve the same load order. Any one of those steps can diverge silently. A modpack records the host’s enabled configuration so the group can reproduce it instead of transcribing names.
Use the pack as the single source of truth after each change. When the host adds, removes, or updates a mod, save a new pack, distribute it, have everyone enable it, reload, and only then restart the session. Keep an older pack available when possible so the group can roll back a change that introduces a dependency or load error.

Version or protocol mismatch
A message stating that the client or server version is unsupported points to step two: align the tModLoader builds. Changing a mod file will not repair a protocol mismatch. Update the server or switch clients to the release that is already running, then restart.
Missing dependency or failed load
A named library, framework, or “required mod” error means the server did not load the complete dependency chain. Install the exact required item through the server’s modpack or management workflow, enable it, and restart. If the log names a version requirement, use that compatible version rather than the newest unrelated release.
Download or Workshop failure
If the log shows that a file could not be downloaded, check whether the server permits mod downloads and whether the client can reach the required Workshop content. Do not assume a visual hang means the file is still downloading. A blocked or disabled download leaves the client waiting for content it cannot obtain; the log should reveal the failed request or file.

Stack trace naming a particular mod
Use the first mod named in the stack trace as the investigation target. Confirm that its version and dependencies match the pack. Temporarily remove that mod from the shared pack and test a clean restart; if the connection succeeds, look for an updated compatible release or leave the mod disabled for this server.

Capture the complete server log from startup through the failed join, not only the final disconnect line. Verify the build and pack again, then test with the smallest known-good shared configuration. If that succeeds, add the group’s mods back in controlled batches until the log identifies the change that reintroduces the failure.
Docker, native, and managed servers: the practical differences

Recovery when a previously working world stops accepting players
- Stop new join attempts so the log is not filled with overlapping errors.
- Record the client and server tModLoader builds and align them.
- Ask the host for the current modpack, enable exactly that pack on every client, and complete the reload.
- Compare the pack with the server’s enabled list and restore any missing library dependency.
- If the failure began after a specific update, restore the prior pack and compatible mod versions, then restart both sides.
- Test one player first. Add the remaining players only after that connection succeeds.
This process separates a global server problem from a single client’s divergent configuration. It also preserves a known-good configuration instead of making several untracked changes during an outage.
Preventing the next sync failure
- Keep one dated modpack for each multiplayer session and distribute updates through that pack.
- Write down the exact tModLoader build used by the server and tell players not to update independently during an active campaign.
- After every mod or version change, reload, restart the server, restart clients, and test one connection before the full group joins.
- Keep required library mods in the pack and verify that they are enabled on the server.
- Use Workshop identities through a modpack or server-management tooling rather than selecting by display name alone.
- Save the server log from a failed join; the first named mod, dependency, or stack-trace line is more useful than the generic syncing message.
- Separate server-required content from optional client-only quality-of-life or visual mods, and remove the optional items when troubleshooting.
When self-hosting is impractical
If the operator cannot keep a server build, container image, and modpack synchronized, a managed tModLoader server can reduce the amount of infrastructure maintenance. It does not remove the requirement for identical client and server builds, mods, versions, and load order; those still have to match. Treat hosting as a deployment convenience, not as a remedy for a divergent mod list.
