If Windows reports that msvcrt.dll is missing, was not found, or has an entry-point problem, repair Windows components first instead of downloading a replacement DLL. Install pending Windows updates, restart, run DISM from an administrator Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow. DISM repairs the component store that System File Checker uses; SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
If only one older game or application fails while other programs work, the cause may be that application’s Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. In that case, install or repair the official Redistributable package matching the program’s architecture and toolset generation. Do not copy a random msvcrt.dll into System32 or a game folder.

What msvcrt.dll is and why the error appears
msvcrt.dll is a Microsoft C runtime library used by Windows components and by software built with Microsoft development tools. A program can fail when the file is damaged, when Windows has an inconsistent component store, or when the program expects a runtime dependency that is missing or mismatched.

- “msvcrt.dll was not found” or “cannot start because msvcrt.dll is missing”: Windows or the application cannot load the library it expects.
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in msvcrt.dll”: the file that loaded may be a different version from the one the application was built to use, or another dependency may be incompatible.
- One game or program fails: investigate that program’s installed runtime and files first.
- Many programs fail, or Windows behaves abnormally: treat it as a possible Windows component or system-file problem and use DISM followed by SFC.
The same message can therefore have different remedies. Replacing a DLL blindly can hide the real cause and introduce an incorrect architecture or version.
Before changing anything
Write down the complete error text, the executable that triggers it, and whether the problem affects every application or only one. Note whether the failure began after a Windows update, a game update, a driver change, a cleanup operation, or an interrupted installation. This information helps you choose between system repair and an application-runtime repair.
- Save game progress and close running programs before servicing Windows.
- Use an account that can approve administrator prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power during DISM and SFC; either operation can take several minutes.
- Do not delete or rename files in
C:WindowsSystem32,SysWOW64, or a game’s installation directory as a first step.
Repair sequence for a Windows-wide problem
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, and restart even if Windows does not immediately request it. Microsoft places updating and restarting before the current SFC workflow because pending servicing operations can affect the files being checked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter the restart, launch the program again. If the same message appears, continue with DISM rather than downloading a standalone DLL.
2. Run DISM with administrator rights
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC obtains replacement copies from that store, so running DISM first is important when protected files may be damaged.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter the following command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
The /Online switch targets the Windows installation currently running. /RestoreHealth checks the component store and repairs corruption when possible. Progress can remain at one percentage for a while; do not close the window simply because it appears paused.
Wait for DISM to finish and report that the restore operation completed successfully. If it reports an error, record the complete code and wording. Restarting and retrying once is reasonable, but repeated failures should be handled through Microsoft’s servicing guidance or your computer manufacturer’s support instructions rather than by substituting a downloaded DLL.
3. Run System File Checker after DISM
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC verifies protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. A scan that is interrupted before completion does not provide a reliable result.
4. Read the SFC result correctly
Common outcomes have different meanings:
| SFC message | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. | SFC did not find missing or corrupted protected files. | Test the affected program again. If only that program fails, follow the application-runtime steps below. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. | SFC replaced one or more protected files. | Restart Windows and retest the game or application. |
| Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. | Some files remain unresolved. | Confirm that DISM completed successfully, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the files, use Microsoft’s servicing guidance or professional support. |
| Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. | The scan could not complete in the normal environment. | Retry SFC in Safe Mode, as Microsoft advises. |
5. Retry SFC in Safe Mode when necessary
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services, which can remove interference from third-party software. On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. At the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option. Open an administrator Command Prompt there and run sfc /scannow again. Restart normally when the scan is complete.
When only one game or application fails
A single-program failure points away from a Windows-wide replacement and toward that program’s files or runtime dependency. Microsoft states that an application built with its libraries needs a Visual C++ Redistributable package at least as recent as the build tools used to create it. The correct package is determined by the application, not simply by whether your copy of Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Identify the application’s architecture
Use the game or application’s official system requirements, installer notes, or support instructions to determine whether it requires x86, x64, or ARM64. A 32-bit game normally requires the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows. A native 64-bit program generally uses x64. Software compiled for Windows on ARM may require ARM64. Installing only x64 does not satisfy an x86 application.
| Application requirement | Redistributable architecture to select | Typical situation |
|---|---|---|
| x86 (32-bit) | Official x86 package | Older games and 32-bit utilities, including those running on 64-bit Windows. |
| x64 (64-bit) | Official x64 package | Native 64-bit games and applications. |
| ARM64 | Official ARM64 package | Applications built for Windows on ARM. |
Architecture is only half of the decision. Toolset generation also matters. Install a package that is at least as recent as the build tools used by the application, following the publisher’s documented requirement. Do not assume that a package installed for a different generation, or one copied from another PC, is interchangeable.
Install or repair the official package
- Obtain the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable specified by the game or application’s vendor, using the official Microsoft distribution rather than a DLL archive.
- Choose the architecture required by the executable: x86, x64, or ARM64.
- Run the installer and accept the license terms.
- If the installer detects an existing package, choose Repair when that option is offered.
- Restart Windows, then launch the affected program.
Microsoft documents installer switches including /install, /repair, and /uninstall. The graphical installer is safer for most readers because it shows the detected package and confirms the operation. If you use a command line, apply the switch to the exact official installer that matches the application’s architecture and toolset; do not use it with an unrelated executable.
Recheck the game’s own installation
If the runtime is correct but the game still fails, use the game platform’s file-verification or repair feature, if provided, and follow the game publisher’s support procedure. A damaged executable or plugin can produce a runtime-looking message even when Windows itself is healthy. Preserve the exact error text and the executable name when contacting support.

| Remedy | Best fit | Scope | Supportability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update and restart | Pending servicing or recently changed Windows components. | Whole Windows installation. | Microsoft-supported first step. |
| DISM followed by SFC | Missing or corrupted protected system files, especially when multiple programs are affected. | Whole Windows installation. | Microsoft-serviced repair path. |
| Visual C++ Redistributable install or repair | One application requiring a missing, damaged, or mismatched runtime. | That runtime and the applications that use it. | Use the official package and matching architecture. |
| Application repair or reinstall | Program files or its installer are damaged after runtime and Windows checks pass. | One application. | Follow the application vendor’s instructions. |
| Random DLL download | Not a recommended remedy. | Unverified file copied into a system or application folder. | Unsupported and may create version, architecture, or security problems. |
What not to do with msvcrt.dll
- Do not download a standalone DLL from a random archive. The file may be the wrong build, architecture, or language, and replacing a serviced Windows file bypasses Windows component management.
- Do not overwrite files in System32 or SysWOW64 manually. Those directories contain files managed by Windows servicing. An administrator account does not make an unverified replacement safe.
- Do not place a system DLL beside a game executable as a workaround. That can change DLL loading order and make future updates or diagnosis harder.
- Do not uninstall every Visual C++ package indiscriminately. Different applications can depend on different generations and architectures. Repair or add the package documented for the failing application.
- Do not treat a clean SFC result as proof that every application dependency is installed. SFC checks protected Windows files; it does not install a game’s separate runtime requirement.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 considerations
The DISM and SFC commands are the same on supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations. The visible Settings paths differ, but the important requirement is an elevated Command Prompt and a restart after repairs. A 64-bit edition of either Windows can still run 32-bit games, so select the Redistributable architecture required by the executable rather than copying the architecture of Windows itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error began immediately after an application update, start with that application’s installer or support instructions after completing the Windows checks. If it began after a Windows change and affects several programs, retain the DISM and SFC output and investigate Windows servicing. If it began after a driver or hardware change, record that timing for support; do not assume the DLL itself is the only component involved.
When the standard sequence does not solve it
DISM fails
Record the exact DISM error code and whether the command was run in an administrator window. Restart, verify that Windows Update is not waiting for a reboot, and retry once. Continued failure requires Microsoft’s servicing instructions or support from the PC manufacturer; substituting a DLL is not an equivalent repair.
SFC repeatedly reports unresolved corruption
Run DISM again first, then rerun SFC. If SFC still cannot repair files, use Microsoft’s documented recovery options or qualified technical support. Keep the SFC result, the time of the failure, and the original msvcrt.dll message together so the next technician can distinguish a Windows integrity issue from an application dependency issue.
The error remains after both tools report success
Return to scope: if one program fails, verify its architecture, toolset generation, and Visual C++ Redistributable repair. If several programs fail, check Event Viewer for errors recorded at the same time and review recent Windows or software changes. The application vendor can identify a private dependency that Windows repair tools do not install.
The program starts but then crashes
Capture the crash time, executable name, and any entry-point wording. A startup crash can be caused by a mismatched runtime even when a file named msvcrt.dll exists. Use the official runtime package and the application’s repair procedure, then test after a restart.
Quick Recap
Safe decision checklist
- Have you copied the exact error wording and identified whether one program or many are affected?
- Did you install pending Windows updates and restart?
- Did you run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthin an administrator Command Prompt? - After DISM completed, did you run
sfc /scannowto 100 percent? - If SFC could not complete, did you retry in Safe Mode?
- If one application still fails, did you identify its x86, x64, or ARM64 requirement and its toolset generation?
- Did you install or repair the matching official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?
- Did you avoid copying a downloaded DLL into a Windows or game folder?
- If the issue persists, did you preserve the error text and consult the application or PC manufacturer’s support instructions?
