Start with the official MTG Arena status page. If maintenance or an outage is affecting the service, reinstalling the client, changing a password, or editing your network will not restore play queues. When service is available, match the remedy to the exact symptom: account recovery for rejected credentials, the proxy procedure only for a PC “Checking for Updates” Null Reference error, a clean reinstall for broader PC update failures, and connection testing for disconnects or lag.
This guide follows Wizards of the Coast’s support guidance available in October 2026 and separates targeted fixes from general diagnostics so you do not make unnecessary security or network changes.

Use this symptom-to-fix map first
| What you see | Best first route | How targeted is it? |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance notice, outage, or every queue unavailable | Wait for service recovery and monitor the official status page | Service-side; local changes cannot repair it |
| Credentials rejected or password forgotten | Use the official password-reset flow; then submit an Access Issues request if recovery fails | Account-specific |
| PC remains on “Checking for Updates” with “Null Reference” | Use the Windows proxy-setting procedure described below | Error-specific; do not apply it to every update problem |
| PC installer or updater fails without that error | Remove the Arena installation, uninstall, and reinstall; try the Steam installation if the web installer still fails | General PC installation repair |
| “Cannot connect,” repeated disconnects, or no server connection | Restart the router and computer, test another network, and check VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus effects | Network diagnosis |
| Connection works but play is jerky or drops | Reduce competing traffic, test wired networking, and compare another network or ISP | Network-quality diagnosis |
| Matchmaking queue does not start | Confirm service and connection, restart Arena, then consult current known issues or support | No dedicated current queue-repair procedure is established |
Change one relevant setting at a time. Record what you changed so you can restore it when a test has no effect.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Check whether MTG Arena is available
Open the official MTG Arena status page before troubleshooting your device. Planned maintenance can take down login, games, and play queues together. In that situation, a local reinstall or password change only adds work and may remove useful local settings.
#1 Best Overall
- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM

- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
An October 5, 2026 Wizards announcement said maintenance on October 7 was expected to make all services and play queues inaccessible for eight hours. That event is historical, not a current outage schedule. Use the live status page for present conditions rather than relying on an old announcement.
How to interpret the result
- Service incident or maintenance: wait for the provider’s recovery notice. Try again after the stated window rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
- No incident shown: continue with the section matching your symptom. A status page cannot prove that your home network, account, or client is healthy.
- Only one mode appears affected: note the mode, platform, and time. Include those details if you contact support; do not assume matchmaking rules are the cause of a technical failure.
2. Recover an account that will not let you sign in
Login rejection is an account-access problem, not a reason to start by changing DNS, forwarding ports, or disabling antivirus. Use Wizards’ account password-reset flow first.
- Open the official account recovery page and submit the email address associated with your Arena account.
- Check the inbox for that address, including spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders.
- If you have used more than one address, check each inbox tied to your Wizards account.
- Follow the reset link and create a new password that you have not used elsewhere.
- Sign in again from the Arena client.
If no message arrives or the reset does not restore access, submit a support request and choose Access Issues. The account-recovery article was updated July 8, 2026. Keep passwords, reset links, payment details, and authentication codes private; support should not require you to publish them in a forum or send them to another player.

- A password-reset email that never arrives points to inbox ownership, filtering, or account details.
- A successful web sign-in followed by a client connection error points to the client, service, or network path.
- If several devices fail with the same credentials while the status page is normal, include the exact message and account email (through the private support form, not in public posts).
3. Fix a PC “Checking for Updates” Null Reference error
Wizards has a specific procedure for a PC client stuck on “Checking for Updates” with a Null Reference error. This is a targeted proxy-settings fix, not a universal answer to every update failure.
Windows procedure
- Close MTG Arena completely.
- Open Control Panel.
- Choose Internet Options.
- Open the Connections tab and select LAN Settings.
- Clear the checkbox for the proxy server option listed there, then apply the change.
- Launch Arena and test the update.
Only change the proxy setting if it matches the error-specific guidance and you understand that it affects Windows internet connections. If your school, employer, or household deliberately requires a proxy, record its original state and restore it when testing is complete.
Rank #2
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Mac guidance
The same Wizards article provides different proxy instructions for macOS. Use that Mac-specific route rather than copying the Windows menu path. If the named Null Reference error remains after the documented procedure, contact support with a screenshot or exact text, your operating system, and the client version.
4. Repair broader PC installation or update failures
When the web installer or updater fails without the Null Reference symptom, Wizards identifies partial previous installations, network problems, and Windows-level problems as possible causes. Its clean-install sequence removes the damaged Arena installation before downloading a fresh client.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClean-install sequence
- Close Arena and its launcher. In Task Manager, end an Arena or launcher process only if it is visibly still running.
- Find the folder named MTGA in the default Wizards of the Coast installation directory, if you installed to that default location.
- Delete only that Arena folder. Check the path carefully so you do not remove unrelated game or personal files.
- Uninstall MTG Arena from Windows’ installed-apps or programs list.
- Download and install the current client again from the official Arena page.
- Use the 64-bit client where the installer offers a choice.
The support guide was reported as updated about three months before October 13, 2026, so menu names and the default path can change. If you chose a custom install directory, remove the Arena folder from that location instead of deleting the default path blindly.
If the webpage installer still fails
Try the Steam installation as an alternate distribution route. This can bypass a problem with the webpage installer, but it does not repair an account outage or a blocked network. After installation, sign in with the same account and check whether the failure follows the client.
Preserve useful evidence
- Write down the installer error text and the approximate time it appeared.
- Note whether the failure occurs before download, during download, or while applying an update.
- Keep the platform and Windows edition available for support.
5. Diagnose a complete connection failure on PC
If Arena cannot connect at all while the status page is normal, use reversible tests in this order. Each test helps distinguish a local device problem from a network or service-path problem.

- Restart the computer.
- Restart the router or modem, allowing it to finish reconnecting before launching Arena.
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot, if your data plan and device support it.
- If possible, try another computer on the same network. A second device helps show whether the router or the original PC is involved.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or proxy. Restore the setting if it makes no difference or if your organization requires it.
- Check whether the firewall or antivirus is blocking Arena. Add the official client as an exception only when you can identify the correct executable, and re-enable protection after a diagnostic test.
Networks that commonly impose restrictions
School and workplace networks may block game traffic or restrict unfamiliar ports. A successful hotspot test alongside a failed campus or office test is evidence of a network-policy difference, not proof that Arena itself is down. Ask the network administrator for an approved solution rather than bypassing organizational controls.
6. Troubleshoot mobile connection problems
Mobile Arena requires an internet connection. Wizards’ mobile guidance recommends Wi-Fi when available, closing background applications, and restarting the device. The mobile FAQ also recommends Wi-Fi for stability.
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network and retry.
- Close other apps, especially those actively downloading or streaming.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Test again on another trusted network if available.
- If the issue remains across networks, contact your mobile carrier for service or routing help.
Do not treat older device specifications in the mobile FAQ as current compatibility requirements without checking a current platform source. Compatibility and operating-system support can change independently of connection troubleshooting.
7. Reduce lag and disconnections
Arena can connect successfully and still suffer from latency, stalls, or dropped matches. Wizards’ support guidance recommends reducing competing traffic and testing the connection path rather than promising that a particular speed guarantees play.
Bandwidth and local traffic
| Guidance | Qualification | Test |
|---|---|---|
| At least 25 Mbps download | Wizards’ undated support guidance, page updated about three months before October 13, 2026 | Run a current speed test while no large download is active |
| At least 3 Mbps upload | Same Wizards guidance; this is a troubleshooting threshold, not a performance guarantee | Compare results when the network is idle and when the problem occurs |
| Close programs using the internet | Especially video streaming and large transfers | Pause them, then repeat the same Arena action |
| Try wired networking | Useful only if the device and router support Ethernet | Connect an Ethernet cable and compare stability with Wi-Fi |
| Try another network or ISP | Diagnostic comparison, not a requirement to change providers | Use a permitted alternate connection and observe whether drops follow you |
Run one comparison at a time. If wired play is stable but Wi-Fi is not, investigate wireless interference, distance, or router configuration before changing Arena files.

8. Advanced Windows network tests
Wizards’ advanced PC article lists several deeper options. These can affect other applications, and public DNS can cause problems on some corporate networks. Use them only when you administer the computer and network, and make a note of every original value.
Public DNS
Changing DNS can help resolve a path or lookup problem, but it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade. Follow your operating system’s network-adapter instructions, record the existing DNS addresses, and revert if corporate services or other sites stop working.
Windows hosts file
Remove custom MTG Arena entries from the Windows hosts file if you previously added them. Do not delete unrelated entries. A stale manual mapping can send the client to an obsolete address.
Port forwarding
The advanced guidance names TCP ports 80, 443, 30010, and 30003. Port forwarding is configured on the router, not inside Arena. It is unnecessary for many home networks and can create exposure if configured broadly. Use the exact device address, forward only the named TCP ports, and remove the rule if it does not help. Ask the network administrator for assistance on managed networks.
VPN and drivers
The article lists trying a US-based VPN and updating network drivers as possible tests. A VPN can change routing and may violate school, work, or game-network policies; use it only where permitted and treat any improvement as evidence of a routing issue, not a permanent requirement. Install drivers from the computer or network-hardware manufacturer and create a restore point or backup when your operating system supports it.

9. When matchmaking will not start
A queue that hangs is not automatically a matchmaking-balance problem. First establish that the service is available, confirm that other online functions work, and restart the Arena client. If the queue still does not proceed, consult the current known-issues page or contact support with the exact mode, platform, error text, and approximate time.
What Wizards documents about unranked matching
In its June 3, 2024 explanation, Wizards says unranked matchmaking considers relative deck power and player skill. It also acknowledges the limits of that approach: With a game as complex as Magic, however, no system will perfectly account for all the strategies, variables, and deck-building options available to players, let alone the myriad motivations those players have.
That explanation can account for a pairing that feels uneven, but it does not provide a client-side reset or a current step-by-step repair for a queue that never starts. Do not change decks, concede matches, or reinstall solely because an opponent looked mismatched; those actions do not establish a technical cause.

- Whether other modes or account screens load normally.
- The exact error, a screenshot if safe, and the time zone and approximate time.
- Whether the problem occurs on another network.
10. A safe escalation checklist
Contact official support when the targeted procedure fails, the problem crosses multiple networks or devices, or an account cannot be recovered. Give support reproducible details instead of changing many settings at once.
- Confirm you checked the current status page.
- State the symptom in the client’s own words: update error, login rejection, connection loss, lag, or queue stall.
- List the platform, operating-system version, and Arena distribution route (web installer or Steam on PC).
- Describe the last successful action and the first failed action.
- Include the approximate time, region if relevant, and whether another network changed the result.
- For account cases, use the private Access Issues form and never post credentials publicly.
Restore any proxy, VPN, firewall, DNS, hosts-file, or router changes that did not help. A clean record of the final configuration makes both your network safer and the support diagnosis faster.
