Stop restarting MySQL blindly. First preserve the data directory and logs, then determine whether mysqld is crashing, being killed, or failing during InnoDB crash recovery. If recovery cannot complete, innodb_force_recovery is an emergency mode for extracting data—not a repair switch. Start at level 1, increase only one level at a time, dump what you can, and rebuild or restore the instance from a known-good copy.

The safest remedy depends on the exact error, your MySQL release, the condition of the storage hardware, and how much data loss your last verified backup can tolerate.

What a repeating InnoDB crash actually means
An unexpected process exit is normally followed by automatic InnoDB recovery when MySQL starts again. A short recovery phase is expected. A loop in which mysqld starts, prints the same InnoDB error, and exits is different: recovery is failing, the operating system is killing the process, or the underlying files or hardware are damaged.
Do not treat every restart as “InnoDB corruption.” Similar symptoms come from several failure classes, and each needs a different response.

| Observed behavior | Likely class | What it means for the fix |

mysqld exits with an assertion, stack trace, or segmentation fault |
Process crash or software defect | Preserve the trace, identify the exact MySQL build, and investigate a reproducible bug or damaged page. |
| The operating system reports an out-of-memory event or a kill signal, while the MySQL log has no final InnoDB error | Resource pressure or external termination | Check memory, disk space, cgroups, service limits, and the operating-system journal before changing InnoDB files. |
| InnoDB scans redo or undo records and stops before accepting connections | Crash-recovery failure | Clone the data directory, then use the least forceful recovery level needed to make a logical dump. |
The log reports a corrupt redo log, such as ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT |
Redo-log corruption | Follow the release-specific recovery procedure; do not copy redo files from another data directory. |
| A table or tablespace is missing, cannot be opened, or has invalid page or dictionary metadata | Damaged or missing tablespace | Identify the affected table, preserve the original files, and plan a dump, restore, or specialist recovery. |
| Deadlock messages appear while the server remains available | Workload-level deadlocks | Deadlocks are normally transaction conflicts, not a reason to delete InnoDB files; fix transaction ordering and retry handling. |
The final InnoDB message, the MySQL version, a stack trace if one exists, and operating-system evidence are more useful than the number of times the service has been restarted.
Do this before changing a setting
- Stop the restart loop. Disable automatic restarts temporarily or stop the service through your platform’s service manager. Repeated starts can overwrite useful log context and make a damaged system harder to capture.
- Preserve the original data. Make an offline copy or storage snapshot of the complete MySQL data directory, including system tablespaces, undo files, redo files, per-table tablespaces, and metadata. Keep this copy untouched. Work on a clone.
- Collect configuration and logs. Save the active option files, the MySQL error log, the service-manager output, the operating-system journal, kernel storage messages, and any core dump or stack trace.
- Record the incident context. Note the exact MySQL version and edition, storage engine, recent upgrade or downgrade, filesystem or storage changes, disk-space and memory conditions, the last known-good backup, and the first time the failure appeared.
- Verify the backup you intend to use. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Record its creation time and test that it can be read before discarding any original files.
Never delete ibdata, undo, or redo files as a generic “reset.” Those files contain recovery state and data that may not exist elsewhere.

Read the error log and reproduce the failure safely
Oracle MySQL’s operational guidance is direct: when an operation fails or you suspect a bug, look at the MySQL server error log. Start with the first error in the failing sequence, then capture the final InnoDB message immediately before exit. A later “server shutdown” line is often only a consequence.
Run the server in the foreground
If your service manager hides useful output, start a cloned instance in the foreground with the same option file and a separate, disposable port or socket. A foreground launch makes recovery messages and assertions visible in the terminal. Do not point an experimental process at the only copy of production data, and do not run two servers against one data directory.

Use an InnoDB monitor when the process stays up
For hangs, lock problems, or dictionary and tablespace investigations, enable the relevant InnoDB monitor and capture its output while the condition is present. The monitor is diagnostic evidence; it does not repair pages. Disable it after collection if it produces sustained log volume.
Distinguish a crash from a kill
A stack trace or assertion identifies a process-level failure. An operating-system out-of-memory record, container eviction, service timeout, or hardware reset points elsewhere. Compare timestamps in the MySQL error log, service log, and kernel log. If the operating system killed mysqld, forcing InnoDB recovery will not solve the resource limit.

Do not experiment with recovery modes while the instance is healthy enough to back up. First take a logical or physical backup and verify that the backup can be read. Then inspect only the suspected objects.
Check a suspected table
When the server is stable, run CHECK TABLE database_name.table_name; for the affected table and save the result. Check one table at a time so that an expensive or problematic check does not obscure the original incident. A clean check is useful evidence, but it does not prove that every page, backup, or application query is healthy.

Look for the trigger
- Review the error log around the first failure, not just the latest restart.
- Compare the failure with a recent upgrade, filesystem change, storage migration, or sudden loss of power.
- Check free disk space, filesystem errors, memory pressure, and storage-device health.
- Inspect application logs for a single query, migration, or bulk load that consistently precedes the crash.
Keep the verified backup until the repaired or rebuilt instance has passed read tests and representative application queries.
When startup recovery fails: use a controlled extraction path
If normal startup cannot complete, the priority changes from “make this instance writable” to “extract data without worsening the original.” Clone the data directory or take a storage snapshot first. Apply changes only to the clone.

innodb_force_recovery=1under the[mysqld]section of the option file used by the cloned instance. - Start the clone and read the error log. If it accepts connections, do not perform normal writes or schema changes.
- Dump the required databases, tables, routines, events, and triggers to a separate storage location. Validate that the dump finishes and can be read.
- If level 1 cannot start the clone or cannot reach the data needed for extraction, stop it, raise the value to
2, and retry. - Increase one level at a time only when the previous level is insufficient. Record the level, startup result, errors, and objects successfully dumped.
- After extraction, remove the forced-recovery setting from the rebuild or restored instance. Do not promote the forced-recovery clone to production.
The permissible nonzero values are 1 through 6 in current MySQL 8.0 documentation. A successful start at any nonzero value means only that MySQL could bypass some recovery work; it does not mean the data files are repaired.
What each innodb_force_recovery level does
| Level | Use and limitation | Operational posture |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Normal operation; no forced recovery. | Use only when ordinary startup and recovery work correctly. |
| 1 | Least forceful emergency level. It attempts to let the server open while ignoring limited corruption. | First extraction attempt on a cloned data directory. |
| 2 | Skips additional background recovery work. | Use only if level 1 cannot start or expose the required data. |
| 3 | Skips transaction rollback work. | Extraction may be possible, but uncommitted state and consistency require careful validation. |
| 4 | Skips change-buffer merge work. | Dangerous. MySQL warns that values 4 or greater can permanently corrupt data files; treat this as last-resort extraction. |
| 5 | Skips undo-log scanning. | Some rows or transaction effects may be unavailable. Do not use as a repair mode. |
| 6 | Skips redo roll-forward. | Pages can remain obsolete because redo is not applied. Use only to extract what cannot otherwise be recovered. |
Levels 4 through 6 can leave the instance read-only or unable to perform normal consistency work. Never run application writes against them. Keep the original files untouched because a forced start can alter the state of the files it opens, and the higher levels can permanently corrupt data files.

Dumping data from a forced-recovery instance
Connect only long enough to extract data. Begin with the most valuable or least damaged schemas rather than assuming an all-database dump will complete.
- List databases and tables that can be read.
- Dump each critical schema or table to a new destination, recording failures separately.
- Include stored routines, events, and triggers when they are part of the application.
- After each dump, inspect its end-of-file and run a test import into an isolated clean MySQL instance.
- For a table that aborts the dump, continue with unaffected tables and document the unreadable object for a separate recovery decision.
Do not assume that a dump file created by a process that exited early is complete. A syntactically valid file can still omit rows or terminate before its final statements. Test-import it and compare row counts or application-level invariants where those checks are available.
Rebuild or restore instead of “repairing” the damaged instance
Once corruption is confirmed, the integrity-first path is a clean installation or clean data directory populated from a validated logical dump or a known-good physical backup. Forced recovery optimizes for data extraction; restore and rebuild optimize for a consistent database.
Choose the path using these questions
| Question | Favors dump and rebuild | Favors restoring a physical backup |
|---|---|---|
| Can the server start at a force level that permits reliable reads? | Yes, and required tables can be dumped and test-imported. | No, or the dump is incomplete. |
| Is corruption logical or physical? | Logical damage limited to identifiable objects. | Physical page, tablespace, storage, or redo damage affecting broad areas. |
| How much recent data can be lost? | The dump contains the acceptable recovery point. | The backup is newer or more complete than any readable dump. |
| How reversible is the operation? | High when the original clone is retained and the dump is verified. | High when the backup has been restored and tested separately. |
| What downtime is acceptable? | Longer rebuild and validation window. | Faster return if a tested physical restore is available. |
Build the replacement
- Install the same MySQL major release first, unless a documented upgrade plan requires another version.
- Restore the logical dump or physical backup into an isolated location.
- Validate table reads, indexes, constraints, routines, events, and representative application queries.
- Inspect the replacement host’s disks, filesystem, memory, and configuration before cutover.
- Cut over only after the error log remains clean during a realistic workload and the rollback plan is documented.
If recovery from the failure path cannot be resolved, recovery from backup may be necessary. When repeated page corruption, hardware faults, or production data loss are suspected, involve a qualified database-recovery specialist or support service and preserve the original media for them.

Special cases that need a different remedy
Redo-log corruption
Redo layout and behavior vary by MySQL release. The error message ER_IB_MSG_LOG_CORRUPT was added in MySQL 8.0.30, so its presence or absence helps date the diagnostic vocabulary but does not by itself identify the cause. Do not copy redo files between unrelated data directories. Use the release-specific documentation and the cloned-instance extraction procedure.
Checkpoint and dictionary recovery changes
From MySQL 8.0.26, checkpoint advancement is restricted until redo recovery and dictionary metadata transfer complete. A startup that appears to stall at this phase should be correlated with the exact 8.0 release and the preceding error-log messages rather than “fixed” by deleting files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMissing tablespaces
A missing per-table tablespace or an unavailable system tablespace is a file and metadata problem. Confirm the expected file path, mount, permissions, and storage health, then work from a snapshot or backup. Recreating an empty table with the same name does not restore the missing rows.
Assertion failures and repeatable crashes
Save the complete assertion text, stack trace, version, configuration, and the smallest reproducible workload. A repeatable assertion may be a software defect, but damaged pages or hardware can produce similar symptoms. Upgrade or downgrade decisions should follow the exact error and supported version path, not a guess.
Deadlocks
Deadlocks are expected InnoDB transaction conflicts when concurrent transactions lock resources in incompatible orders. If the process remains online, handle the deadlock error by rolling back and retrying the transaction, then correct inconsistent lock ordering or transaction scope. A deadlock message alone is not evidence that the files are corrupt.
Why common “fixes” make the incident worse
- Blind restart loops: They erase timing context and can repeatedly modify recovery state without producing a usable copy.
- Deleting
ibdata, undo, or redo: This can destroy the only copy of pages or recovery records. - Starting at level 6: It skips redo roll-forward and can leave pages obsolete; it is not a faster version of level 1.
- Writing to a forced-recovery server: Emergency levels are for extraction and may be read-only or inconsistent.
- Declaring success after a clean restart: Startup proves only that the process started. It does not validate every table or application query.
- Copying redo files from another server: Redo files belong to a specific data directory and release behavior; mixing them can create further corruption.
- Running checks on an unstable production instance: Diagnostics can add load and obscure the original failure. Use a clone whenever possible.
Validate the recovered database before returning it to service
- Test-import every logical dump you plan to rely on and confirm that it reaches its final statement.
- Read every restored schema and run checks on tables implicated by the incident.
- Compare row counts, key totals, timestamps, and application-specific invariants with the last known-good reference.
- Exercise representative reads and writes in a staging environment before production cutover.
- Review storage-device and filesystem health, disk capacity, memory limits, service settings, and recent upgrade history.
- Keep the original snapshot and recovery logs until the replacement has survived an agreed observation period and a new backup has been verified.
- Monitor the MySQL error log and operating-system logs after cutover for recurring corruption, assertions, kills, or resource pressure.
The practical decision rule
If MySQL starts normally, back it up and investigate the exact error. If it fails during recovery, clone the files and use the lowest innodb_force_recovery level that permits a verified dump. If only dangerous levels expose the data, treat the result as partial extraction and rebuild from the dump or restore a known-good backup. If the operating system or hardware is at fault, fix that layer before trusting any database-level repair. The goal is not merely to make mysqld stay running; it is to return a database whose files, rows, and application behavior have been validated.
