How to Fix Ninjala Connection Errors, Lag, and Matchmaking Problems

Check Ninjala’s service notices, run the Switch connection test, and narrow down lag or matchmaking failures with targeted network checks.

If Ninjala won’t connect, keeps disconnecting, or lags, check the game’s official news for maintenance or a server issue first. If no service problem is announced, run the Nintendo Switch connection test, note the NAT type and speeds, then change one network condition at a time and test again. A wired connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the problem, but it cannot fix a game-server outage or guarantee smoother matches.

1. Check Ninjala’s service notices first

Before changing router settings, check the Ninjala News page. The official Ninjala FAQ says, “An issue with the Ninjala servers may be affecting your connection,” and recommends checking the game’s news and Nintendo support. If maintenance is underway, modes that require an internet connection are unavailable until service resumes.

Server status can change, so check the notices at the time the problem occurs. If an outage or maintenance is announced, wait for service to return rather than treating router changes as the necessary fix.

2. Test the Switch connection and record the results

  1. On the Switch, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
  2. Record whether the internet connection succeeds, along with the displayed NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
  3. After each network or console change, run the test again so you can compare results.

A successful test confirms that the console can reach the internet; it does not prove that Ninjala’s servers or a particular opponent are reachable reliably or with low latency. Nintendo’s NAT descriptions are general guidance for Switch peer-to-peer communication, not a diagnosis of Ninjala’s live servers:

  • NAT A: Preferred for peer-to-peer communication.
  • NAT B: Compatible with most other NAT types.
  • NAT C: May have difficulty connecting to some more restrictive NAT types.
  • NAT F: Unable to complete peer-to-peer communication.

Nintendo also notes that high latency can cause matchmaking to time out even when NAT and connection speeds otherwise seem acceptable. Don’t assume a specific Ninjala error code corresponds to a particular NAT grade unless official guidance says so. See Nintendo’s matchmaking troubleshooting guide.

3. If matches start but gameplay lags

Lag can come from several parts of the network path; download speed alone does not identify the cause. Nintendo lists slow internet, a weak wireless signal, wireless interference, and slow responses from network devices among common latency causes. Symptoms can include characters jumping around, delayed control response, or disconnections after slow responses.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
  • Move the Switch closer to the router to test whether signal strength is involved.
  • Move metal objects and electronics away from the console and router to reduce possible wireless interference.
  • If your Switch setup supports it, test with a wired Ethernet connection.

Change one condition at a time, play or retry the affected mode, and rerun the connection test. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular change helped.

4. If matchmaking fails or disconnects at match start

Notice whether the problem occurs with every opponent or only one specific player. Nintendo says a problem limited to one player may be related to that player’s network. If it happens with anyone, your own network or router can still be responsible; compare your connection-test results and continue checking the local setup.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - US Version
  • New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

If documented checks do not resolve a problem affecting all players, consult your router manufacturer or internet service provider. Nintendo’s guidance is platform-level advice; it does not establish a Ninjala-specific cause for every matchmaking failure.

5. Try Ethernet only if your Switch setup supports it

A wired test is an optional way to isolate Wi-Fi signal or interference problems. Nintendo documents wired Ethernet setups for Switch configurations using a compatible USB LAN adapter where the dock or model does not have a built-in LAN port. Switch Lite requires a compatible licensed accessory for a wired setup. Connect the adapter or dock to a router or gateway with an Ethernet cable, then repeat the connection test and try Ninjala again. See Nintendo’s wired-connection setup instructions.

DRAGON BALL FighterZ - Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch features: Simplified controls for single Joy-Con play. More features to be announced.
  • Spectacular fights: Experience aerial combos, destructible stages, and famous scenes from the Dragon Ball anime reproduced in 60 FPS
  • 3VS3 TAG/SUPPORT: Allows players to train and master more than one fighter/style, which brings deeper gameplay.
  • HIGH-END ANIME GRAPHICS: Using the power of the Unreal engine and the talented team at Arc System Works, DRAGON BALL FighterZ is a visual tour-de-force.
  • Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Cartoon violence, mild language, mild suggestive themes

Use a compatible adapter and cable for your specific console setup; the guidance supports the accessory category, not a particular brand or model. Ethernet may help identify a wireless problem, but it will not repair an announced Ninjala service issue or ensure matchmaking succeeds.

What older Ninjala matchmaking notes do—and don’t—show

Ninjala’s version 2.0 notes, published on August 6, 2020, described a change that allowed cross-region matching when transmission speeds met defined acceptable parameters. They also mentioned an in-game lag-value display and antenna icons. This is historical information, not confirmation that today’s region settings, matching thresholds, or interface are identical. The available current guidance does not establish present-day region-selection controls or current lag thresholds.
