If a downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 game freezes, stops responding, or closes unexpectedly, restart the console, install the latest system and game updates, and then check the game’s data for corruption. If you see a specific error code or message, follow Nintendo’s instructions for that exact error instead; the general sequence below is for downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 software, including Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games.
First check which troubleshooting path fits
Before changing settings or deleting software, identify what is failing. Nintendo’s general troubleshooting guidance applies to downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 software played on a Nintendo Switch 2 console. It does not replace the instructions for a particular error message, original Nintendo Switch games played on Switch 2, or a title-specific compatibility issue.

| A downloaded Nintendo Switch 2 game freezes, becomes unresponsive, or closes without a specific message | Use the general steps in order: restart, update the console and game, check the game’s data, then consider redownloading. |
| An error code or specific error message appears | Search Nintendo Support for that exact code or message and follow its dedicated instructions. Nintendo says to do this rather than rely only on the general troubleshooting article. |
| Only one game fails | Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for that title, as well as its data and storage location. |
| The failing game is an original Nintendo Switch game running on Switch 2 | Use Nintendo’s separate troubleshooting guidance for original Switch games; the general downloaded Switch 2 software article does not cover that case. |
| Several downloaded games fail | Start with the general console and software steps below. If the problem continues, contact Nintendo Support. |
The principal steps below follow Nintendo Support’s North American guidance for “General Problems with Downloaded Software for Nintendo Switch 2 (Freezing, Not Responding, etc.).” Exact menu wording and available support options can differ by region.
1. Restart the console
A restart is the least disruptive first step. If the game is merely stuck, this can return the console to a state where you can test it again without deleting software or changing storage.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
- Open the console’s Power Options and choose Restart.
- After the console starts again, launch the affected game and see whether the original problem recurs.
If the console itself does not respond, press and hold the POWER Button for 12 seconds to force it to shut down. Then turn it on again. Use that forced shutdown only when an ordinary restart is not possible.
2. Install the latest system update
Update the console before moving on to more disruptive recovery steps. Open System Settings → System → System Update and follow the on-screen instructions. When the update is complete, try the game again.
If the console cannot complete the update, or the same problem returns, note what happens and continue with the remaining applicable steps rather than assuming the game’s files are the cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A game update is separate from a console system update. To check for one without launching the game:

- Go to the HOME Menu and highlight the affected game.
- Press the + or − Button.
- Choose Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- After the check or update finishes, start the game and test the same activity that caused the freeze or crash.
If only one game is affected, keep that distinction in mind as you troubleshoot. It can point toward that title’s data or compatibility rather than a problem shared by all software, but it does not by itself establish the cause.
4. Check the affected game for corrupted data
Before deleting and downloading a game again, have the console scan its data. This checks the affected software and is a more targeted step than immediately removing it.
- Open System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software.
- Select the game that is freezing or closing.
- Choose the option to scan for corrupted data and follow the on-screen prompts.
If the scan finds corrupted data, follow the console’s instructions and then test the game. If the problem persists, Nintendo’s general guidance recommends deleting and redownloading the affected software.

Redownloading is a later step because it requires removing and obtaining the software again. Nintendo says downloadable software can be redownloaded using the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Save data is stored in the console’s system memory; it is separate from the downloadable game software, which is why the software can be deleted and downloaded again.

- Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
For the specific error path “the software was closed because an error occurred,” Nintendo’s instructions call for redownloading the game to system memory and removing the microSD Express card before doing so. That is a more specific instruction than the general redownload recommendation, so follow it when that error path applies.
If you are following the general path and card storage may be involved, test the game from system memory where practical. This helps determine whether the symptom changes when the game is no longer being read from the card. Do not treat a new card as a general cure for crashes: first test whether the issue persists without card storage.
6. Isolate microSD Express storage when relevant
Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards. If the affected downloaded game is stored on one and the earlier troubleshooting steps have not helped, Nintendo’s general guidance includes removing the card and downloading the game directly to system memory, formatting the card, or trying a different card. The evidence here does not establish a particular card brand, capacity, or model as a fix.

Where practical, remove the microSD Express card and download the game to system memory, then test it. If the game works from system memory, that is useful evidence that the card or card-based storage may be involved; it does not prove which component caused the issue.

- OFFICIALLY READY FOR NINTENDO SWITCH 2. Officially licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, this microSD Express card offers dependable, high-performance storage.
- CAPTURE IN STUNNING CLARITY. Capture screenshots and record short video clips of your gameplay in Full HD.
- ROOM FOR YOUR ADVENTURES. With capacities up to 512GB[1], your card gives you the freedom to store your digital games in one place.
Before formatting or replacing a card
- Back up screenshots and videos before formatting. Formatting erases the card’s contents.
- Try system memory before buying another card. It is a practical way to isolate card storage without making an accessory purchase first.
- Use another card only as a test if available. Nintendo’s guidance suggests trying a different card when relevant, but does not identify a specific product or promise that replacement will fix a crash.
Do not confuse game software with save data. Nintendo states that save data is stored on system memory, while downloadable software can be redownloaded with the purchasing Nintendo Account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Use advanced recovery only for the matching error path
Nintendo’s instructions for “the software was closed because an error occurred” include an advanced option to restore settings while keeping user data, followed by redownloading the game to system memory. Treat this as a later recovery step, not the starting point for an ordinary freeze.
Use Nintendo’s instructions for that exact error and follow the on-screen directions carefully. The available guidance does not establish a universal menu path for this recovery option, so do not substitute a guessed sequence from another console or a different error article.
When only one game has a problem
If other games work and a single title will not start or lets you make no progress, check Nintendo’s compatibility document for Switch games with issues on Switch 2. It lists affected titles and how Nintendo is handling their issues. The document is a title-and-status list, not a measure of how common a problem is, and a listing does not mean the whole console has a defect.

In the version checked on October 9, 2026, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 1, and Overwatch 2 were listed as under investigation. Know when to stop troubleshooting and contact Nintendo
Contact Nintendo Support if the issue remains after the applicable official steps, or if the console cannot complete a step. Have the game title, what you were doing when the problem occurred, whether one or multiple games are affected, and any displayed error code or message available. If a code or message appeared, use its dedicated instructions and share the exact wording when contacting support.
