If a Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 will not pair, keeps disconnecting, or responds intermittently, first update the console, check the controller’s charge, then test whether the fault happens attached, wirelessly, or only in TV mode. Re-pair it and reduce possible wireless obstacles before considering service. The right next step depends on where the connection fails.
First identify when the controller fails
Separate the symptom before changing anything. Does the Joy-Con 2 fail to pair, connect and disconnect repeatedly, respond inconsistently during wireless play, fail only in TV mode, or go unrecognized while attached to the console? Nintendo provides separate guidance for wireless response, repeated disconnections, and attached-controller recognition.

- Pairing failure: The Joy-Con 2 does not appear or connect through the controller pairing screen.
- Intermittent wireless response: It is paired, but inputs lag, drop, or stop when detached.
- Attached-use problem: The controller is physically connected but does not register as expected.
- Dock-only problem: The symptom occurs in TV mode but not when the console is undocked.
Note whether one Joy-Con 2 or both are affected, and whether the behavior changes after charging, updating, moving closer, or switching between docked and undocked use. These comparisons help direct troubleshooting; they do not by themselves prove a particular component is faulty.

Update, charge, and pair the Joy-Con 2 again
Nintendo’s wireless-response troubleshooting starts with the latest system update and charged controllers. On the HOME Menu, check the approximate battery level in Controllers. If the controller is low, charge it before judging whether the wireless connection is still unreliable.
#1 Best Overall
- The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
- This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- Install the latest Nintendo Switch 2 system update using the console’s system update settings.
- From the HOME Menu, open Controllers, then select Change Grip/Order.
- On the Joy-Con 2 you want to pair, hold the SYNC button for at least one second.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the intended grip or controller arrangement.
Attaching Joy-Con 2 to the console also pairs them. For Nintendo’s USB pairing method, attach the Joy-Con 2 to a separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip and connect the grip to the dock using USB-C, then follow the console’s pairing prompts. Do not confuse this accessory with the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Charging Grip: Nintendo says the original grip does not work with Joy-Con 2.
Compare docked and undocked play
If the connection problem appears only with the console docked, test undocked use before treating the Joy-Con 2 as defective. Check the dock’s TV connection and power arrangement: Nintendo specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and either the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01, or another adapter rated for at least 54 W for the dock.
Rank #2
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- The HDMI cable included with Nintendo Switch 2 meets the Ultra High Speed standard; the original Nintendo Switch HDMI cable does not.
- The original Nintendo Switch AC adapter cannot support Nintendo Switch 2 dock TV mode.
- If you replace or reconnect the HDMI cable, reconnect the affected controller afterward from Controllers > Change Grip/Order by holding its SYNC button for at least one second.
A dock-only symptom makes the cable and power setup worth checking; it is not, on its own, evidence that the controller needs replacement.
Reduce possible wireless interference
For a Joy-Con 2 that is paired but unreliable when detached, move the controller closer to the console. Nintendo’s instruction is to “Decrease the distance between the Joy-Con 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 console.” Keep the console in the open rather than behind a TV, near an aquarium, inside or under metal, or pressed against a bundle of cables.
Rank #3
- The Joy-Con 2 (L) controller includes the Capture Button.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Nearby wireless equipment and USB 3.0 devices can also be worth checking. Nintendo lists laptops and tablets, wireless headsets, printers, microwaves, speakers, cordless phones, and USB 3.0 devices among potential interference sources. They can often remain on if they are three to four feet away; if the trouble continues, try turning them off temporarily and see whether the connection changes. Treat interference as a possibility to test, not a diagnosis made from the symptom alone.
Check attached recognition and charging
If the controller is not recognized while attached, or it does not charge as expected, check the connection and power before arranging service. Nintendo’s power troubleshooting includes verifying that the correct adapter is being used, checking for damage, resetting each Joy-Con 2 by pressing its SYNC button, reconnecting it, and checking charge status under Controllers.
Rank #4
- These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).
Joy-Con 2 take approximately three-and-a-half hours to fully charge. For charging while attached, Nintendo says the console must be connected to its AC adapter and either powered on or in Sleep Mode. If Joy-Con 2 charge in a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip but not while attached to the console, Nintendo says the console may need service. Persistent controller charging faults should also be serviced.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to contact Nintendo Support
If updating, charging, re-pairing, checking the dock setup, and reducing wireless obstacles do not resolve the problem, contact Nintendo Support or arrange service through Nintendo’s support process. A replacement Joy-Con 2 is a conditional option if service or troubleshooting identifies the controller as faulty; it is not the first step for every connection problem.
Best Value
- The Joy-Con 2 (R) Light Red controller includes NFC (near-field communication) functionality and the C Button, which can open GameChat*.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Compatibility matters if you are testing another controller: Joy-Con 2 work with Nintendo Switch 2 only. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to it. The original Joy-Con Charging Grip is not compatible with Joy-Con 2; use the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip when that accessory is needed.
