Error 2123-1502 can interrupt a Nintendo Switch download or connection, but the code alone does not prove the console is defective. Start by continuing the download and restarting the console, then work through the connection checks below. Nintendo recommends retrying a few times; none of these steps is a guaranteed fix.
Try these 11 checks in order
Nintendo groups several actions together in its support guidance. The numbered steps below separate them into practical checks, from the simplest retry to additional diagnosis.
- Continue the download. Close the error message and choose Continue if that option appears. Nintendo recommends trying the download a few times. If the console displays “Downloading data…,” the download should complete normally.
- Restart the console. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Restart. A restart can clear a temporary interruption without changing your network settings.
- Clear the user cache. On Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, open System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Reset Cache, choose the affected user, and confirm. This removes saved IDs, passwords, cookies, browsing history, and other cached website data. Nintendo says it does not delete downloaded games or game save data. On Switch 2, use System Settings > System > Data-Clear Options > Clear Cache instead. Nintendo’s cache instructions describe the model-specific paths.
- Test the internet connection. Go to System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Note the connection name, SSID, internet result, global IP address, NAT type, and any error code displayed. Nintendo says a successful internet result means the console reached Nintendo’s services. If the test fails, use its error code for the next diagnosis rather than assuming 2123-1502 identifies the underlying cause. Nintendo’s connection-test guidance explains the reported details.
- Check the selected Wi-Fi network and signal. Confirm the console is connected to the network you intend to use. Nintendo recommends a strong wireless signal and suggests placing the console within 10 feet of the router to help ensure one.
- Set up the connection again. Create a new internet connection on the console and make sure it targets the correct network. Nintendo’s regional guidance includes this as a troubleshooting step; it is a way to refresh the saved connection, not a promise that the error will disappear. Nintendo Australia’s error guidance covers connection setup.
- Test an alternate DNS. Nintendo’s North American instructions give Google Public DNS as an example: primary
8.8.8.8and secondary8.8.4.4. These are optional test values, not a guaranteed solution or the only public DNS choice. Follow Nintendo’s manual DNS steps and Google’s terms; if the change does not help, restore automatic DNS. Nintendo’s DNS instructions include the values and setup details. - Verify the MTU setting. Nintendo Australia says the default MTU should be
1400. Check the saved network value rather than changing it to an arbitrary number in search of a fix. This guidance is regional and does not establish that changing MTU resolves the error. - Try another access point or location. If a different network is already available to you, connect to it and retry. If the download works there, the result points toward the original network as a possible factor; if it still fails, the test alone does not identify the cause. This is a diagnostic check, not a reason to buy a router or other equipment.
- Wait and retry later. Nintendo says the problem may be temporary and advises trying again after waiting. Its guidance does not establish that a live Nintendo outage is occurring. As Nintendo Support puts it, “This may be related to a temporary network issue. Please wait a while and try again at a later time.” Nintendo’s error-code guidance gives this advice.
- Follow up using the connection-test error code. If Test Connection fails, record the code it returns and consult Nintendo’s support guidance for that specific code. Error 2123-1502 by itself is not proof of a hardware fault, and Nintendo directs users to diagnose a failed connection test separately. Nintendo’s support article provides the connection-test direction.
What the cache reset removes—and what it keeps
The cache reset clears saved web-related information for the selected user, including IDs, passwords, cookies, and history. Nintendo says downloaded games and game save data are not affected. Check the correct menu path for your console model before confirming the reset.

How to read the results
- If continuing the download works, no network setting change is needed.
- If a different access point works while the original does not, that comparison helps isolate the current network as a possible factor; it does not prove which router or service setting is responsible.
- If the console’s connection test returns an error, use that code to continue troubleshooting. A failure is more informative for diagnosis than the download error alone.
- If the same problem persists after the checks, wait and try again later or consult Nintendo Support. The available guidance does not rank one step as a guaranteed cure.
