If a swing, shake, or soccer kick is not registering properly in Nintendo Switch Sports, start with Nintendo’s game-specific checks: reduce nearby wireless interference, move the console out of a metal rack, remove unlicensed covers temporarily, recalibrate the gyro, and hold the Joy-Con with its + or − button at the top. For soccer, check the leg strap fit. If the problem continues, test another Joy-Con and use Nintendo’s update, reset, calibration, and service guidance.
Try Nintendo Switch Sports’ game-specific checks first
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports troubleshooting FAQ recommends checking the wireless environment, console placement, controller orientation, and gyro calibration. Treat these as diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.

- Reduce possible wireless interference. Temporarily switch off nearby devices that may cause radio interference, such as a microwave oven or cordless phone, or test in a location farther from them.
- Move the console out of a metal rack. If the Switch is stored in one, take it out and try the game again.
- Remove unlicensed covers temporarily. Check both the console and the controller; test without any unlicensed cover fitted.
Recalibrate the gyro sensor
For the game-specific gyro check, open HOME menu > System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Gyro Sensor Calibration and follow the on-screen prompts. Nintendo’s menu wording may vary by region or system software version.
If you need the general Joy-Con motion calibration procedure, Nintendo’s controller calibration guide gives these steps:
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
- Remove straps and accessories from the controller.
- Check that the console has the latest system update.
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold the − or + button on the controller, then detach it when prompted.
- Place it on a flat, stable surface with the control stick facing upward. Wait for calibration to finish, then select OK.
Hold the Joy-Con in the prescribed orientation
Nintendo says to hold the Joy-Con with the + or − button at the top. Holding it another way can make some shaking inputs harder to register, including a tennis serve. Check the orientation before assuming the controller is faulty.
For soccer kicks, check the leg strap
If the unreliable input is a soccer kick while using the leg strap, check that the strap is fitted correctly. Nintendo notes that incorrect placement can make kicks harder to register and provides a placement guide through its Switch Sports troubleshooting page. Follow Nintendo’s fitting instructions rather than relying on a guessed position or measurement.

If the game-specific checks do not help, determine whether the issue follows one controller or also appears in other software that supports motion controls. Try another Joy-Con if one is available. Nintendo’s general motion-control troubleshooting guide also recommends checking controller firmware, resetting a detached Joy-Con, and calibrating motion controls.
- Update the controller: check for the latest controller firmware through the console’s Controllers and Sensors settings.
- Reset a detached Joy-Con: press its SYNC button once, then press another button to reconnect it.
- Check for an obstructed IR motion camera: temporarily remove a protective cover if it blocks the right Joy-Con’s IR motion camera.
- Compare with other supported software: note whether motion control problems occur outside Nintendo Switch Sports, too.
Nintendo says the Joy-Con needs service if motion controls fail in any supported software or if calibration fails. Check service eligibility before buying a replacement.

Match the symptom to the next check
| Symptom or scope | What to check | What Nintendo’s guidance supports |
|---|---|---|
| Response worsens near electronics or while the console is in a metal rack | Move away from possible interference sources and test the console outside the rack | Nintendo lists both as game-specific checks. Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ |
| Shaking or a tennis serve is hard to register | Hold the Joy-Con with + or − at the top and recalibrate the gyro | Nintendo specifies the orientation and gyro menu path. Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ |
| Soccer kicks are unreliable while using the leg strap | Check that the strap is fitted correctly | Nintendo identifies incorrect fit as a possible cause of poor kick response. Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ |
| The issue follows one Joy-Con or also occurs in other supported games | Try another Joy-Con, update and reset the affected controller, then calibrate | Nintendo recommends comparison and general troubleshooting; persistent failure across supported software or failed calibration meets its service threshold.
