If you temporarily lose access to your PlayStation Network (PSN) account, your purchases are not automatically deleted: start with Sony’s account-recovery process. But digital purchases are tied to the account that bought them, and Sony’s US terms warn that closing or terminating that account can make its content inaccessible. A different account does not inherit the old account’s library.
First, identify what kind of access problem you have
“I can’t get into PSN” can mean a forgotten password, a compromised account, a suspension, or an account that has been terminated. A console suspension is different again. These situations do not have the same effect on games or the same route to resolution.

|---|---|---|
| Temporary sign-in problem | Sony provides account-recovery and support options. A temporary lockout does not, by itself, mean purchases have been deleted. | Use Sony’s recovery process first. |
| Account suspension | You may be unable to sign in or use PlayStation features, including the Store; some paid products or services may also be unavailable during the suspension. | Check Sony’s suspension notice and follow the appeal or support route for your case. |
| Console suspension | The suspended console cannot access PSN with any account or access Store-purchased content on that console. | Treat it as a device restriction, not proof that your account was terminated. |
| Account termination | Sony says termination ends PSN access and may make account information and content that depends on PSN unavailable. | Do not assume the account or its licenses can be restored; review the applicable terms and contact Sony about the specific case. |
Sony’s US support page explains that an account suspension prevents sign-in and access to PlayStation features, including multiplayer and the Store. Its separate console-suspension description says the restriction applies to that console. See Sony’s suspension guidance.
How to try to recover your PSN account
- Open Sony’s How to recover your account for PlayStation page. Follow the passkey recovery route if you set up a passkey; otherwise, use the account recovery flow if you can access the email address associated with the account.
- Use Sony’s Online Assistant or contact support if self-service recovery is not possible. Sony directs users there if they no longer have access to their account email, cannot provide the requested verification information, forgot their sign-in ID, or see account details changed without permission. Its sign-in troubleshooting page covers related problems.
- If Sony says the account is suspended, read the notice. Check whether the restriction concerns the account, communications, or a console, then use the case-specific support or appeal route linked from the suspension page.
- If the restriction is for a reversed payment, follow the debt-resolution instructions. Sony says a payment reversal can restrict access to online services. Its account-debt support page explains how to address a debt; whether repayment restores access depends on the case and reason for the restriction.
- Once you regain access, secure the account. Sony’s recovery page links to its account-security guidance.
What happens to digital games and other purchases?
Sony’s March 2025 US Terms of Service describe PlayStation Store purchases as personal licenses for private, non-commercial use. The terms say Store content is accessed through the account used for the order, and the license is non-transferable unless applicable law provides otherwise. That means a newly created PSN account should not be expected to receive the old account’s digital library.

The terms also warn: “If you delete or close your Account, you may lose access to and use of any purchased Content.” Sony says account termination is irreversible and can make account-linked information and content unavailable. Its US terms do not generally promise a refund for account-linked items or unused wallet balance unless the agreement or applicable law requires one. Read the US PSN Terms of Service; the terms and legal remedies may differ by country or region.
Some games have an additional dependency: a third-party publisher account linked to PSN. For a product that requires one, closing or unlinking that publisher account may affect access. This is a game-specific condition, not a rule that applies to every PlayStation purchase; Sony’s US terms discuss linked third-party accounts in the same Terms of Service.

Why a chargeback can make the problem worse
A payment reversal is not a safe way to recover an account or dispute a loss of access. Sony says reversing a PlayStation Store payment can restrict an account from its online services. Where the reversal has no lawful basis and a debt is owed, access may remain suspended until the debt is repaid. Use Sony’s debt-resolution process rather than treating a chargeback as an account-recovery step.

- If you are locked out temporarily, pursue recovery before assuming your games are gone.
- If the account is suspended, distinguish an account restriction from a console restriction and follow the instructions for that specific case.
- If the account is terminated, Sony’s US terms warn that PSN-dependent content may no longer be available; they do not promise that a new account can take over the purchases.
- If a particular game uses a publisher account, check that game’s linked-account requirements as well as your PSN status.
The contractual details above are from Sony’s US terms and support pages. Your account’s country or region and applicable law can affect the terms and remedies; check the local terms and contact PlayStation Support for an account-specific outcome.
