How to Fix nlasvc.dll and Network Location Awareness Problems in Windows 10 and 11

Do not download nlasvc.dll from a random DLL site. The file belongs to Windows Network Location Awareness (NLA), so an error mentioning it is often caused by a stopped service, DNS failure, unreachable domain controller, or an incorrect network profile rather than a file that should be replaced manually. Identify which symptom you have, check the profile and NlaSvc service, test DNS, and then use Windows’ own servicing or recovery tools if the file is actually missing or corrupted.

What nlasvc.dll does

nlasvc.dll is a Windows networking component associated with the Network Location Awareness service, shown in Windows as NlaSvc. Microsoft describes NLA as the service provider that lets Windows Sockets 2 applications identify the logical network to which a computer is attached. In practical terms, it helps Windows determine the kind of network connection it has and select a network profile such as Public, Private, or DomainAuthenticated.

The DLL is normally loaded by a Windows service host; it is not an application that you should launch yourself. A message naming it can therefore appear even when the file is present. For example, NlaSvc may fail because it cannot resolve DNS, cannot contact a domain controller, or cannot use a required dependency. On Windows 11, Microsoft assigns the Network List Service a larger role in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) work, so a misleading “no internet” icon does not by itself prove that nlasvc.dll is damaged.

Step 1: Check the current network profile

Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell. Use an administrator window when a command needs to restart a service or repair Windows; the profile query itself can be run in a normal window.

  1. Press Win, type PowerShell, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run:
    Get-NetConnectionProfile | Format-List Name,InterfaceAlias,InterfaceIndex,NetworkCategory,IPv4Connectivity,IPv6Connectivity
  3. Note the interface name and index, the reported NetworkCategory, and whether IPv4 and IPv6 are shown as connected, disconnected, or unknown.

This is a diagnostic step, not a command to force a profile. A domain-joined computer should obtain its domain profile from successful domain detection; manually forcing a Private profile can conflict with organizational policy. If the output is stale, disconnect and reconnect the affected Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter once, then run the query again.

Step 2: Inspect and restart NlaSvc

Using the Services console

  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Network Location Awareness. The service name is NlaSvc.
  3. Read the Status and Startup type. Open Properties and select the Dependencies tab to see services that must be available first.
  4. If the service is stopped, choose Start. If it is running but the profile is wrong or stale, choose Restart. Expect a brief network interruption.

Using PowerShell

In an elevated terminal, check the service with:

Get-Service -Name NlaSvc

If it is running and you need to refresh it, use:

Restart-Service -Name NlaSvc

A “service cannot be started” message is useful evidence; it does not prove that the DLL itself is absent. Record the exact error and check the dependency services shown in the Services console before changing startup settings.

Step 3: Test DNS and internet-status detection

Network Location Awareness depends on a usable view of the network. Microsoft’s NCSI troubleshooting guidance specifically uses the dns.msftncsi.com name for diagnosis.

  1. In PowerShell, run:
    Resolve-DnsName dns.msftncsi.com
  2. If that command is unavailable, run:
    nslookup dns.msftncsi.com
  3. Check whether your configured DNS servers return a result. A timeout, server failure, or “non-existent domain” response points to DNS or filtering rather than a missing DLL.
  4. Run Get-NetConnectionProfile again after correcting DNS or reconnecting the adapter. Compare the connectivity fields before and after.

Check the adapter’s DNS configuration, local router, VPN, security gateway, and any enterprise DNS policy if the name cannot be resolved. Do not disable security controls permanently just to make NCSI appear connected; first determine which DNS request is being blocked and whether the block is intentional.

Step 4: Handle a domain-profile failure

On a domain-joined computer, NLA may be unable to assign the DomainAuthenticated profile when DNS cannot locate a domain controller or when communication with that controller is blocked. This can happen even though ordinary public websites load.

  1. Confirm that the computer is connected to the organization’s network or VPN that provides internal DNS.
  2. Ask your administrator for the current domain-controller hostname, then verify that internal DNS resolves it. A public DNS server will not normally provide the records required for an Active Directory domain.
  3. Test connectivity to the domain controller on the organization’s permitted ports. Microsoft’s documented server scenario calls out both UDP and TCP 389 for the LDAP communication involved in domain detection; firewall policy must allow the traffic where required.
  4. After DNS or firewall changes, disconnect and reconnect the network or VPN, restart NlaSvc, and run Get-NetConnectionProfile again.

If the computer is managed by an organization, do not create firewall rules or alter domain policy yourself. Give the administrator the NlaSvc error, DNS results, interface name, and the time of the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Check NCSI and NlaSvc registry locations cautiously

Microsoft documents HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesNlaSvcParametersInternet and the MinimumInternetHopCount value as diagnostic locations. These keys are not a general-purpose repair switch.

  1. Open an elevated PowerShell window and back up the key before inspecting it. One built-in method is:
    reg export "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesNlaSvcParametersInternet" "%USERPROFILE%DesktopNlaSvc-Internet-backup.reg"
  2. Read the value without changing it:
    Get-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesNlaSvcParametersInternet' -Name MinimumInternetHopCount
  3. Compare the setting with your organization’s documented configuration or Microsoft’s guidance for the exact Windows version. Do not invent a value, delete the key, or import an untrusted registry file.
  4. If the key is missing, the command returns an error, or the value appears wrong, stop and use Windows repair or obtain advice from Microsoft support or your administrator instead of guessing.

Registry changes take effect system-wide and can make a networking problem harder to diagnose. A backup lets you restore the previous state, but it does not replace a restore point or a full system backup.

Step 6: Repair Windows system files

If the message explicitly says nlasvc.dll is missing or corrupt, or if the service fails after DNS and dependency checks, use Windows-supported system repair for the installed edition. Run these commands from Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).

  1. Repair the component store first:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.

  2. Then scan protected system files:
    sfc /scannow
  3. Restart Windows, reconnect the network, and test NlaSvc and the profile again.

DISM may need access to Windows Update or an approved installation source. If it reports that source files cannot be found, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and build, or ask the administrator for the organization’s repair source. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from an unrelated website.

Step 7: Use recovery when the file is genuinely absent

When system repair cannot restore the component, use a recovery method that matches the installed Windows version and preserves licensing and data requirements.

Restore point

If System Protection was enabled and the problem began after a driver, update, or configuration change, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the failure, review the affected programs, and keep a current backup of personal files. System Restore does not replace a full backup and may not be available.

In-place repair

An in-place repair installation using matching Windows installation media can replace damaged Windows components while retaining applications and personal files when the offered options permit it. Confirm the edition and language, back up important data, and follow Microsoft’s instructions for the installed release. On a work computer, obtain approval first.

Reset or clean installation

Use Reset this PC or a clean installation only after less destructive options have failed and you have verified backups, application installers, account access, and encryption-recovery information. A clean installation removes applications and can remove personal data, so it is a recovery decision, not a routine DLL fix.

Why replacing only nlasvc.dll usually fails

  • The file is serviced as part of Windows, so its version must match the operating-system build and component store.
  • NlaSvc can fail while the file is intact when a dependency, DNS path, domain-controller connection, or registry setting is unavailable.
  • A DLL copied from another computer can have different servicing state, permissions, or dependencies.
  • Untrusted DLL downloads can introduce tampered code and leave the underlying network problem unresolved.

For these reasons, use Windows servicing, restore, or recovery rather than downloading a replacement file from a third-party DLL repository.

Windows 11 versus Windows 10 and earlier

The NLA component remains relevant across supported Windows versions, but Microsoft states that Windows 11 uses the Network List Service for the NCSI role described in its guidance. Therefore, on Windows 11, a “no internet” indicator can involve Network List Service or NCSI behavior even when NlaSvc and nlasvc.dll are healthy. Check both the reported profile and the DNS result instead of assuming that one icon identifies the failed component.

On Windows 10 or older installations, NlaSvc remains a central place to inspect when the service will not start or the network category is wrong. In every version, record the exact error, interface, profile, and DNS result before changing settings.

Decision table for common outcomes

Result Next action
Get-NetConnectionProfile shows the expected category and connectivity Do not change the profile. Investigate the application or Windows 11 NCSI indicator that reported the problem.
NlaSvc is stopped and starts successfully Reconnect the adapter, rerun the profile query, and monitor whether the service stops again.
NlaSvc will not start but dependencies are unavailable Repair or restore the dependency first; do not replace the DLL.
dns.msftncsi.com cannot be resolved Correct DNS, VPN, router, proxy, or firewall reachability, then retest.
Public sites work but DomainAuthenticated never appears Check internal DNS and domain-controller reachability, including the documented UDP/TCP 389 path.
DISM and SFC report corruption they cannot repair Use a matching repair source, System Restore, or an in-place repair installation.
The DLL is reported missing after all repairs Use Windows recovery for the installed version; do not download an isolated DLL.

Final verification checklist

  • The computer has the correct Windows edition and current backup information recorded.
  • Get-NetConnectionProfile reports the intended interface, category, and IPv4/IPv6 status.
  • NlaSvc starts without an error, and its dependencies are running.
  • Resolve-DnsName dns.msftncsi.com returns a valid DNS response.
  • A domain-joined device can resolve and reach its domain controller through the organization’s permitted path.
  • DISM and SFC have completed, or a documented recovery method has replaced them.
  • No untrusted DLL file was copied into a Windows system directory.
