Repair an nlhtml.dll error by restarting and updating Windows, then running Microsoft’s built-in repair sequence: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth followed by sfc /scannow. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL: the filename exists in multiple Windows builds and architectures, so an arbitrary copy can be the wrong match.

What nlhtml.dll is and why Windows reports it

nlhtml.dll is a Windows dynamic-link library (DLL). Windows uses DLLs to provide code that applications and system components can load when needed instead of storing every function inside each program. Microsoft’s DLL guidance identifies several broad causes of DLL failures: a file can be missing, damaged, incompatible with the operating-system module that calls it, or unable to load one of its dependencies.

A third-party file catalog describes nlhtml.dll as an HTML filter associated with Microsoft Windows and lists many builds, architectures and hashes. That information is useful for showing that several variants exist; it does not prove that a file downloaded from the catalog is authentic, correctly signed or suitable for your installation. A matching filename alone is not enough.

The practical distinction is important:

  • A missing-file message means Windows or an application could not locate the DLL it expected.
  • A load error can mean the file is present but invalid, incompatible or missing a dependency.
  • An access violation can point to a damaged module, an incompatible module or a problem in the application that called it.

That is why the safest first response is to repair Windows’ component store and protected system files, not to copy a file from a download page.

Is it safe to download nlhtml.dll?

There is no generally safe, filename-only download choice. The cataloged variants differ by Windows release, build, processor architecture and hash. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program can require a 32-bit dependency even though the operating system also contains 64-bit system files. A file that looks correct in Explorer can therefore be the wrong binary for the process that is failing.

Copying an unverified DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also overwrite a protected component, create a permissions problem or leave the original servicing issue unresolved. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that are documented as COM registration libraries; many system DLLs are not registered that way, and a registration error does not demonstrate that nlhtml.dll is missing.

If a manual replacement is ever unavoidable, use only a known-good file from the same Windows version, edition, build and architecture, and follow Microsoft’s documented ownership and replacement procedure. A random internet copy does not meet that standard.

Before you start: record the failure and prepare Windows

Save open work and note the exact wording of the error before changing files. The details determine whether the fault is in Windows, one application or a dependency.

  • Write down the complete message, including whether it says the file is missing, cannot load or caused an access violation.
  • Record the application or Windows feature that displays it.
  • Note your Windows edition and whether the failing process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Check whether the problem occurs everywhere or only in one application.
  • Make sure you can sign in with an administrator account; DISM and SFC need an elevated console.

First restart Windows and install any pending Windows updates. Servicing operations can be left in a temporary state after an update or shutdown, and the repair tools rely on current component metadata. After updates finish, restart once more and test the affected program. If the error remains, continue with the repair sequence below.

Run the Microsoft repair sequence

Run DISM first and SFC second. DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies replacement files; SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired cache when possible.

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open the Windows search box and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

The title bar should indicate an administrator console. If you receive an access-denied message later, close the window and repeat this step; running the commands in a standard prompt is not equivalent.

2. Repair the component store with DISM

At the administrator prompt, enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

/Online targets the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-image selects component-store servicing, and /Restorehealth asks DISM to detect corruption and repair it. Microsoft says DISM can obtain replacement files through Windows Update, so leave the computer connected if Windows Update is working.

Allow the operation to finish. The percentage can pause for a while; closing the window before completion can leave the repair unfinished. Read the final status rather than assuming that a long pause is a failure. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, proceed to SFC even if the original message mentioned only one application.

3. Scan protected files with System File Checker

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Keep the Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft describes this command as scanning protected system files and replacing corrupted files with a cached copy. Running SFC before DISM can leave it without a healthy source, which is why the order matters.

4. Restart and retest

  1. Close the administrator Command Prompt.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open the application or Windows feature that produced the nlhtml.dll message.
  4. Repeat the action that originally failed.

If the error has disappeared, no manual DLL download is necessary. Keep the exact message and scan results if the problem returns; they will be useful for the next diagnostic branch.

Interpret the SFC result

Message Meaning Next action
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. Protected Windows files passed the scan. Investigate the calling application, dependencies, permissions or a non-system copy of the DLL.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. SFC replaced the damaged protected files it could repair. Restart Windows and retest the failing action.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Some files remain unresolved. Review the CBS log, verify the repair source and continue with the escalation steps below.

A successful SFC result does not prove that every application dependency is healthy. It only establishes that the protected files SFC examined passed or were repaired.

When DISM cannot find repair files

DISM may need a source other than Windows Update. Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or Windows installation media as a /Source. The source must match the installed Windows version and edition closely enough to provide the correct component files; do not select a random ISO or a different release merely because it is available.

After connecting the matching source, use the documented source path in a command of this form:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:%SourcePath% /LimitAccess

Set %SourcePath% to the appropriate component path on the running installation or installation media, using the source format Microsoft specifies for that media. The /LimitAccess option tells DISM not to fall back to Windows Update while it uses the supplied source. The exact image file and edition index depend on the media, so verify them rather than guessing. When the command completes, run sfc /scannow again and restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not have a same-version source, do not substitute a random DLL. Capture the error and CBS log information first, then use Windows recovery or obtain matching installation media.

Check architecture, dependencies and the calling application

If DISM and SFC report no remaining corruption but the error persists, the problem may not be the Windows copy of nlhtml.dll. A program can load a private copy, request a dependent DLL that is missing, or pass an invalid interface to a module built for another operating system.

Confirm the process architecture

  • Identify whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Match its dependency architecture; a 32-bit application generally needs 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows.
  • Do not infer compatibility from the operating system’s architecture alone.

Record the result with the error text. If the application and Windows component use different or incompatible module expectations, replacing a file with the same name cannot correct the mismatch.

Look for a dependent-file failure

Microsoft’s DLL troubleshooting guidance recommends dependency analysis to identify missing dependencies, invalid files, import/export mismatches, circular dependencies and modules built for another operating system. Use a dependency-analysis method appropriate to your support environment and examine which module fails to load first. The first reported filename is not always the root cause.

Decide whether the failure is system-wide or application-specific

  • Only one application fails: use that application’s Repair or Modify option if it provides one, then reinstall it from the publisher’s legitimate installer if repair does not help. Check the application vendor’s support documentation for the exact build and dependency requirements.
  • Several Windows features fail: treat the issue as component-store or protected-file corruption and repeat the DISM-then-SFC sequence with a verified repair source.
  • The error appears after an application update: compare the application’s bitness and required runtime modules with the version now installed. The update may have introduced an incompatible dependency rather than removed nlhtml.dll.
  • The file exists but loading still fails: check the path being used, permissions and dependent modules instead of copying another file over it.

What not to do

  • Do not choose a DLL solely because its filename matches.
  • Do not copy an unverified download into System32 or SysWOW64 as a first response.
  • Do not run regsvr32 unless documentation for this specific library says it requires COM registration.
  • Do not delete a protected Windows DLL to force an application to use another copy.
  • Do not assume that an access violation proves the file is missing; the application or a dependency may be at fault.

Review the CBS log when SFC cannot repair everything

When SFC says it could not fix some files, Microsoft’s documented next step is to examine the Component-Based Servicing log:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Search the log for the repair time and the affected filename. Record the exact entries rather than copying a DLL based on a search-engine result. The log can show whether Windows attempted a repair, which file remained unresolved and whether a source mismatch prevented completion.

Keep these details together for support:

  • the complete nlhtml.dll error text;
  • the application name and version, if known;
  • Windows edition and build;
  • 32-bit or 64-bit process and operating-system architecture;
  • the final DISM and SFC messages;
  • relevant CBS.log lines.

Compare the repair approaches

Approach Source trust Build and architecture match Dependency coverage Reversibility and cost
DISM followed by SFC Microsoft-serviced Windows components Targets the running installation Repairs Windows component and protected-file corruption; does not repair every application dependency Built in and reversible through normal servicing; no separate purchase
Matching installation source with DISM Windows installation or verified same-version media Can match the installed release when selected correctly Supplies component files when Windows Update cannot Requires suitable media or a running source; still uses supported servicing
Application repair or reinstall The application publisher’s legitimate installer Matches the application release being installed Can restore private files and application dependencies Usually reversible by uninstalling or restoring the previous version; availability and licensing depend on the application
Random DLL download Unknown unless independently verified Filename alone cannot establish a match Does not repair missing dependencies or component-store corruption Hard to undo safely and may overwrite protected files; avoid as a first step

Escalate when built-in repair still fails

If DISM cannot complete even with a matching source, or SFC repeatedly reports unrepairable files, use Windows recovery options or a same-version repair installation after preserving important data. Follow Microsoft’s recovery documentation for the edition and build installed on the computer.

A clean Windows reinstall is a last resort. Back up personal files first and confirm that you have installers, activation information and recovery credentials. A clean reinstall can remove applications and settings, so it is not an appropriate first response to a single application’s DLL message.

If the failure occurs only in one program after Windows repairs succeed, contact that program’s vendor with the recorded error, architecture and dependency findings. If the failure affects multiple Windows components, provide the CBS.log evidence and DISM/SFC results to qualified support rather than repeatedly replacing files.

A practical decision path

  1. Restart and update: install pending Windows updates, restart and retest.
  2. Repair Windows: run DISM, then SFC, restart and retest.
  3. Supply a matching source: if DISM lacks files, use a same-version running installation or installation medium with /Source, then repeat SFC.
  4. Separate system from application causes: if scans are clean, check process architecture, dependencies, permissions and whether the application uses a private DLL copy.
  5. Repair the application: use its Repair or Modify function, then reinstall from its legitimate installer if necessary.
  6. Escalate with evidence: collect the exact error, CBS.log entries, Windows build and architecture before recovery or professional support.
