The “Not Authenticated with Minecraft.net” error means Minecraft Java Edition cannot validate your current account session with Minecraft’s authentication services. In most cases, signing out of the Launcher, fully closing it, and signing back in with the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition restores multiplayer access. If that does not work, refresh the Launcher’s local web cache, confirm you are not using an offline client, and consider whether authentication services are temporarily unavailable.
What “Not Authenticated with Minecraft.net” means
This message appears when a Java multiplayer connection cannot prove that the account starting the game has a valid, current session with Minecraft services. The server may be reachable and your internet connection may be working, but the account token presented during login is missing, stale, expired, or tied to a different account.

The error is therefore different from a normal server-address, firewall, or game-performance problem. Repeatedly changing graphics settings, allocating more memory, or lowering render distance will not repair an account-authentication failure. The first checks should concern the Microsoft account, the Launcher session, and the official status of Minecraft authentication services.
Check these conditions before changing files
- Edition: The documented scenario concerns Minecraft Java Edition multiplayer. Make sure you are launching Java, not assuming that a Bedrock sign-in screen or console account behaves identically.
- Account ownership: The Microsoft account signed into the Minecraft Launcher must be the account that owns Minecraft Java Edition. A different family member’s account, an old address, or a second Microsoft account can leave the Launcher open while still failing server authentication.
- Client type: Offline and cracked clients do not provide the official account authentication accepted by servers that require authenticated players.
- Scope of the outage: If several legitimate players begin reporting the same message at the same time, a Minecraft authentication-service maintenance event is possible. A local repair will not make a service-side outage end sooner.
Fix the error in the recommended order
Use the least invasive remedy first. The sequence below follows the account, session, local-state, client, and service causes that can produce the same visible message.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
1. Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the profile or account menu in the Launcher window.
- Select Sign Out. Do not merely close the game; the objective is to discard the current Launcher session.
- Close the Launcher completely after signing out. On Windows, check that no Launcher window remains open before continuing.
A complete sign-out is important because simply returning to the title screen can leave the same invalid session in memory.
2. Sign back in with the owning Microsoft account
- Reopen the Launcher.
- Choose the Microsoft sign-in option.
- Use the Microsoft account that purchased or otherwise owns Minecraft Java Edition.
- Wait for the Launcher to finish loading your account and profiles before starting Java Edition.
Microsoft External Staff guidance for this error specifically recommends signing out and signing back in with the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, verify the email address rather than relying on whichever account your browser happens to suggest.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Confirm the profile shown by the Launcher
Before joining a server, inspect the profile or username displayed in the Launcher. The expected Java profile should appear, not an old name, an empty profile, or a profile associated with another account. This check is especially important after changing a Java username: the Launcher can retain stale profile information or session data even though the account change itself is valid.

- Learn your way around one block at atime in the new tutorial mode
- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
Start Java Edition only after the correct profile is visible. If the name is still wrong, sign out again and repeat the account selection carefully instead of trying to join servers with the stale profile.
4. Remove the Launcher web cache when a fresh sign-in is not enough
If the correct account is shown but the same message continues, clear the Launcher’s local web cache. This removes cached sign-in and profile data without deleting your worlds or resource packs.
- Close Minecraft and the Launcher.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%appdata%.minecraftin the address bar and press Enter. - Find the folder named
webcache, if it is present. - Delete that
webcachefolder only. - Reopen the official Launcher and sign in again with the owning Microsoft account.
The folder may not exist on every installation. If it is absent, do not create a replacement folder or delete unrelated directories; move to the next check.

5. Update or reinstall the Launcher if its local installation is damaged
Microsoft’s response also recommends checking for Launcher updates and reinstalling the Launcher when necessary. Do this after the sign-out and cache steps, because reinstalling is more disruptive and does not correct a wrong-account sign-in or an authentication-service outage.
Use the official installation source for the Launcher. After reinstalling, sign in with the account that owns Java Edition and verify the displayed profile before testing multiplayer. Keep your existing world saves backed up independently if you plan to remove or alter any Minecraft installation folders; the authentication fix itself does not require deleting worlds.
If you changed your Minecraft username
Changing a Java username does not by itself prove that your account has lost ownership or that a server is permanently rejecting you. The practical problem is that the Launcher may still display an old profile or hold an older session token. Sign out completely, close the Launcher, sign in again, and confirm that the updated profile appears before launching the game.

If the new username is visible but authentication still fails, treat the problem as a normal session or service issue. Do not repeatedly change the username as a troubleshooting method; that does not refresh the Microsoft account session.

Offline and cracked clients cannot pass official authentication
Some servers show this message when the player is using an offline or cracked client. Such clients do not present an official Minecraft account session, so a server configured to require authenticated accounts will reject the connection. CubeCraft documents this as one possible cause of the same error, alongside temporary authentication-server maintenance.
The remedy is not a cache cleaner or a network tweak. Install and open the official Minecraft Launcher, sign in with a Microsoft account that owns Java Edition, and launch the official Java profile. A server may still have its own access rules, but an unauthenticated client cannot satisfy a server’s requirement for an official account.

When Minecraft authentication services are down
A service-side maintenance event can produce the same message for players who are using legitimate accounts and the official Launcher. Clues include several unrelated servers failing at once, the correct Microsoft account and profile appearing normally, and other players reporting the same problem during the same period.

When those signs point to an outage, avoid repeated reinstalls and account changes. Check for published Minecraft authentication-service maintenance notices, wait for the service to recover, then restart the Launcher and sign in again. Waiting is low risk; deleting local files during an outage adds work without addressing the cause.
Choose the next fix by cause
| Likely cause | Action | Risk and reversibility | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong Microsoft account or expired session | Sign out, close the Launcher, and sign in with the account that owns Java Edition. | Low risk; fully reversible. | The correct profile appears and authenticated servers accept the connection. |
| Stale username or profile data | Verify the displayed profile after signing in; repeat the complete sign-out if it is old. | Low risk; no game files need to be removed. | The current Java username is shown before the game starts. |
| Corrupt or stale Launcher web cache | Delete %appdata%.minecraftwebcache when present, then sign in again. |
Moderate local change; worlds are not in this folder, but delete only the named cache. | The Launcher creates fresh web data and the account authenticates. |
| Outdated or damaged Launcher installation | Check for Launcher updates or reinstall the official Launcher. | More invasive than clearing cache; preserve saves separately. | A clean Launcher sign-in succeeds with the owning account. |
| Offline or cracked client | Use the official Launcher and an owned Microsoft account. | Requires changing the client; no local cache fix can substitute for authentication. | The client supplies an official account session. |
| Minecraft authentication-service maintenance | Wait for service recovery, then restart the Launcher and retry. | Lowest risk; timing depends on the service. | Multiple affected players recover without local changes. |
What not to do first
- Do not start with DNS changes. The documented causes concern account validation, client support, local Launcher state, or service availability; a DNS change is not an established fix for those causes.
- Do not use a VPN as a default remedy. It can add another variable to an authentication problem and does not create a valid Microsoft account session.
- Do not rely on generic PC cleaners. Removing unrelated temporary files can make recovery harder while leaving the Launcher’s account state untouched.
- Do not keep retrying an offline client. A server that requires official authentication will continue to reject it.
- Do not delete the entire
.minecraftfolder. The targeted cache step calls for thewebcachefolder only. Broad deletion can remove worlds, screenshots, settings, mods, and resource packs that are unrelated to the login failure.
How to tell whether the fix worked
Use a controlled test after each change. First confirm that the Launcher displays the expected Microsoft account and current Java profile. Then start Java Edition and try one server you are authorized to join. If that server connects while another does not, the remaining problem may be specific to the second server’s access rules rather than your Launcher authentication.
If every authenticated server still returns the message, note which steps you completed, whether the profile name is current, and whether other legitimate players are affected. That information separates an account or local-session problem from a Minecraft service event and prevents repeating the same destructive steps.
When the message keeps returning
A recurring error after a successful sign-in usually means one of three things: the Launcher is switching back to a different Microsoft account, local web data is being reused, or the authentication service is intermittently unavailable. Recheck the account email, repeat the targeted cache removal once, and compare the timing with service-maintenance reports.
Recommended Free Tools
If the official Launcher, owning account, current profile, and service availability all check out but no Java multiplayer server accepts the session, preserve your Minecraft saves and record the exact wording, Launcher version, account used, and time of failure before contacting official Minecraft or Microsoft support. Do not provide your password or authentication codes to a server operator or an unverified utility.
