Most NumPy installation failures on Ubuntu come from using the wrong Python interpreter, missing virtual-environment tooling, or installing a NumPy version that does not match a compiled dependency. The reliable fix is to create an isolated environment, activate it, install with that environment’s interpreter, and verify the same interpreter is used by your code, editor, notebook, service, or CI job.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Use the workflow below first. Then match any remaining error to the specific repair section rather than modifying Ubuntu’s system Python.

Start with a clean virtual environment
These commands assume a project directory and a supported Ubuntu Python installation. They deliberately bind every pip operation to the interpreter that will run your program.
1. Install Ubuntu’s virtual-environment and pip tooling
If python3 -m venv fails, or pip is not available, install the Ubuntu packages first:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y python3-full python3-pip python3-pip-whl
Ubuntu’s python3-full package includes virtual-environment support. Installing these packages through apt keeps the operating-system Python under Ubuntu’s package manager.
2. Create and activate the environment
From the project directory, create a local environment named .venv and activate it in the current shell:
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
Your shell prompt may show (.venv). Confirm that the command resolves inside the project:
which python3
The result should end in .venv/bin/python3. If it points to /usr/bin/python3 or another project, do not install NumPy yet; fix activation or use the explicit path .venv/bin/python.
3. Upgrade pip and install NumPy through the active interpreter
Use python -m pip, not a separately resolved pip command. This guarantees that pip belongs to the interpreter named python in the active environment:
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install numpy
When a compatible wheel exists, pip downloads a prebuilt binary instead of compiling NumPy locally.

python -c 'import sys, numpy as np; print(sys.executable); print(np.__version__)'
The executable must be inside .venv, and the import must complete without a traceback. A shorter version check is:
python -c 'import numpy as np; print(np.__version__)'
If your application, editor, notebook, service, or CI job uses a different executable, selecting the same .venv/bin/python there is part of the installation fix.
Why Ubuntu reports an externally managed environment
externally-managed-environment is Ubuntu’s implementation of the PEP 668 protection for the system interpreter. An EXTERNALLY-MANAGED marker tells pip that Ubuntu owns the system Python and that arbitrary project packages should not be written into it.
Recommended Free Tools
The documented remedy is: If you wish to install a non-Debian-packaged Python package, create a virtual environment using python3 -m venv path/to/venv.
Create and activate .venv, then run python -m pip install numpy from inside it.
Do not use sudo pip for application dependencies. It can overwrite files managed by apt and leave Ubuntu tools with incompatible versions. Pip has a --break-system-packages override, but that bypasses the protection and carries system-maintenance risk; it is not the normal solution for a project.
Fix “No module named numpy” after pip says it succeeded
This almost always means installation and execution targeted different Python installations. A terminal can have several Pythons, and an editor or notebook can use its own interpreter even when the shell shows an activated environment.
Compare the shell’s Python and pip
which python
which pip
python -m pip --version
python -c 'import sys; print(sys.executable)'
The pip path and executable should both contain the same .venv directory. If which pip points elsewhere, ignore that standalone command and reinstall with the active interpreter:

python -m pip install numpy
Check the application’s interpreter
Run the runtime check from the same place that launches the failing program:
python -c 'import sys, numpy as np; print(sys.executable); print(np.__version__)'
For an editor, choose the project’s .venv/bin/python in its interpreter selector. For a notebook, select a kernel created from that environment. For a service or script, configure the command to call /full/path/to/project/.venv/bin/python rather than relying on a login shell’s PATH. Make the same selection in CI.
Fix “Importing the numpy c-extensions failed”
This message is a wrapper around a lower-level import problem. Save the complete traceback before changing packages. It contains the Python version, NumPy version, shared-library error, and the first frame outside NumPy.
Check the environment before reinstalling
- Confirm
python -c 'import sys; print(sys.executable)'points into.venv. - Confirm
python -m pip --versionreports pip from that same environment. - Inspect
PYTHONPATHand remove stale entries that point to another NumPy installation. - Record the Python and NumPy versions shown by the traceback and by
python -c 'import numpy as np; print(np.__version__)'.
NumPy’s troubleshooting guidance identifies multiple Python installations, PATH or PYTHONPATH settings, and incorrect environment setup as common causes. If the traceback names another package first, troubleshoot that package rather than repeatedly reinstalling NumPy.
Fix ABI errors involving NumPy 2
Messages such as _ARRAY_API not found, module compiled against API version v1 but this version of numpy is v2
, and numpy.dtype size changed
indicate that a compiled extension was built against an incompatible NumPy application binary interface (ABI).
NumPy 2.0 was released in June 2024. A package compiled for the NumPy 1.x ABI may need a newer release, a rebuild, or a temporary NumPy 1.x pin.
Identify the incompatible package
- Read the complete traceback.
- Find the first frame or module name outside NumPy itself. That is usually the extension that must be upgraded or rebuilt.
- Check whether a newer release of that dependency supports your Python and selected NumPy version.
Upgrade compatible packages together
When the dependency has a NumPy 2-compatible release, upgrade it and NumPy in the same virtual environment:

If the dependency has not migrated, constrain NumPy below 2:
python -m pip install 'numpy<2'
Keep that constraint in the project’s requirements file until the dependency publishes a compatible build. If the extension is yours, rebuild it against the NumPy version you intend to support instead of relying on an older binary.
When pip tries to build NumPy from source
A source build is substantially more complex than installing a wheel. It may occur because no wheel exists for your Python version, Ubuntu architecture, or selected NumPy release, or because constraints force an unsupported combination.
Prefer a compatible wheel
First check that your Python and NumPy versions have a matching binary distribution. Updating pip inside the venv helps pip recognize current wheels:
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install numpy
Do not switch to a source build merely because a wheel was not selected; inspect the preceding pip output for the reason and verify your Python version and platform.
Install the documented Debian/Ubuntu build prerequisites when a source build is intentional
For an intentional local build, install the compiler, Fortran compiler, BLAS/LAPACK development libraries, pkg-config, Python headers, and pip:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y gcc g++ gfortran libopenblas-dev liblapack-dev pkg-config python3-pip python3-dev
Then retry inside the activated environment. A successful build can still fail at import time if a dependent extension uses a different NumPy ABI, so a compiler-only fix does not resolve compatibility errors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Resolve dependency conflicts instead of forcing pip
Pip’s resolver may report that two packages require incompatible NumPy or Python ranges. Read the entire resolver output; the final line alone may omit the package that imposed the constraint.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify every package and version range named in the conflict.
- Upgrade the package that blocks the desired NumPy version when a compatible release exists:
python -m pip install --upgrade package-name. - If an upgrade is unavailable, choose mutually compatible versions and record them in a requirements file.
- Recreate the environment and install from those pins so the result is repeatable.
Do not silence the resolver by mixing system packages, random global installs, and the project environment. A clean environment makes the selected set of versions visible and reversible.
Recreate a damaged environment safely
Recreating the venv is often faster than repairing a mixture of old wheels and source builds. Save any project dependency list first, then run:
deactivate
rm -rf .venv
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install numpy
If the project has a maintained requirements file, install it after upgrading pip:
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
For a NumPy 1.x compatibility constraint, put numpy<2 in that file rather than relying on a one-time shell command. Re-run the application’s import test after all dependencies are installed.
Choose the right installation strategy
| Approach | Interpreter isolation | Distribution source | Compatibility considerations | Maintenance risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu system Python with pip | None; modifies the OS interpreter | Mixed system packages and pip files | PEP 668 may block installation | High; can conflict with Ubuntu-managed tools |
Python venv with pip |
Project-local interpreter and site-packages | Usually wheels from pip | Must select versions compatible with Python and dependent extensions | Low when recreated from pinned requirements |
| Conda-style environment | Environment isolation | Conda packages and, where appropriate, pip wheels | Keep package sources and channel choices consistent | Depends on disciplined environment files and channel management |
| Source build | Can be isolated in a venv, but binaries are locally compiled | Local compiler, BLAS/LAPACK, and headers | Requires a supported compiler toolchain and ABI alignment | Highest; builds are slower and harder to reproduce |
For a normal Ubuntu application, a project-local venv with a compatible wheel is the simplest path. Other distribution methods can be valid when a project already standardizes on them, but changing methods does not remove the need to align the interpreter and compiled dependencies.
Verify every layer before asking for help
which python3resolves inside.venv.python -c 'import sys; print(sys.executable)'reports the same environment.python -m pip --versionshows pip installed in that environment.python -c 'import numpy as np; print(np.__version__)'succeeds.- Your editor, notebook kernel, systemd service, and CI job invoke that same interpreter.
- The first traceback frame outside NumPy identifies the package requiring an upgrade or rebuild.
- The project records Python version, NumPy version, Ubuntu version, installation method, number of Python installations, and any compiler/build log.
These checks distinguish an installation failure from an interpreter-selection failure and from an ABI failure. That distinction determines whether you should reinstall, change the selected interpreter, upgrade a dependent package, pin NumPy, or install build tooling.
Prevent the error on future Ubuntu projects
- Create a
.venvbefore installing project dependencies. - Activate it in each new shell, or call its Python executable by absolute path in automation.
- Use
python -m pipfor every install, upgrade, and inspection command. - Keep dependency pins, including any temporary
numpy<2constraint, under version control. - Configure the editor and notebook to use the venv interpreter rather than the system Python.
- Recreate the environment when changing major NumPy versions or when a package has been rebuilt against a different ABI.
When the environment, package source, and ABI are deliberately aligned, Ubuntu’s system-Python protection becomes a guardrail rather than an obstacle.
