If Device Manager reports “Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)” for an NVIDIA graphics card, start with the driver reinstall, then verify the exact NVIDIA or computer-maker driver, Windows and system firmware updates, and power connections. Code 43 is a symptom rather than a single fault: it can result from a driver problem, an incompatibility, inadequate power, firmware issues, or a failing graphics card. The sequence below moves from the lowest-risk software repair to hardware support and possible replacement.
What NVIDIA Code 43 means
In Device Manager, Code 43 means that Windows received a failure report from one of the drivers controlling the device. Microsoft’s full message is: “Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43).” NVIDIA describes Code 43 as a generic hardware-or-software problem that can appear for an NVIDIA device and may refer to nvlddmkm.sys.

The message does not identify one universal fix. The correct next step depends on the GPU model, the Windows 10 build and architecture, the installed driver, the computer’s BIOS or SBIOS, power delivery, and the physical condition of the card. There is no single driver version that fixes every NVIDIA model, and no software-only remedy is guaranteed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore changing anything
- Save open work. Driver removal and a restart will close applications and temporarily disable the normal graphics driver.
- Use an administrator account. Windows may require elevation to remove a device or install a driver.
- Record what is installed. Write down the NVIDIA model, current driver version and date, and any error text before uninstalling it.
- Use a trusted source. For a manual download, use NVIDIA’s official driver search or the support page for the computer manufacturer. Microsoft warns against unofficial driver sites.
- Do not buy replacement hardware yet. Complete the driver, update, firmware and power checks first.
Step 1: Identify the GPU and current driver
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the NVIDIA device showing the warning icon or Code 43.
- On the General tab, confirm the exact device name and read the status message.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider, driver date, driver version, and any available driver details.
If more than one display adapter is listed, identify which entry is the NVIDIA GPU. A laptop may also show integrated graphics from another manufacturer; do not remove that adapter when the NVIDIA device is the one reporting Code 43.

Step 2: Reinstall the driver through Device Manager
Microsoft’s documented first repair is to remove the affected device and allow Windows to reinstall its driver after a restart. This is the least invasive path because it changes the device software before you alter firmware, cabling or hardware.
- Save your work and close running applications.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA device that reports Code 43 and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows displays a checkbox to remove the driver package, read the prompt carefully and confirm only the NVIDIA device you identified.
- Restart Windows.
- After sign-in, open Device Manager again and expand Display adapters. Windows should attempt to detect the device and install a usable driver.
The screen may use a basic display driver during the transition, so a lower resolution or missing NVIDIA control features immediately after the restart is not, by itself, proof that the card has failed. Check the device’s status again. If Code 43 is gone and the adapter is working, test the display output and the application that previously exposed the problem.
Step 3: Install the correct driver manually when Windows does not recover
If Windows leaves the adapter on a basic driver, shows Code 43 again, or does not restore a usable NVIDIA driver, install a package that matches the hardware and operating system.

- Use the exact GPU model you recorded in Step 1 to select a driver in NVIDIA’s official search tool, or open the support page for the computer manufacturer.
- Confirm that the package supports your edition and architecture of Windows 10. Microsoft specifically warns that the driver must match the Windows version and architecture.
- For a laptop or an OEM desktop, check the computer maker’s package as well as NVIDIA’s package. OEM systems can require a manufacturer-specific driver for the design, firmware or power profile.
- Download the installer only from the official NVIDIA or computer-manufacturer support site.
- Run the installer, follow its prompts, and restart Windows when requested.
- Return to Device Manager, open the NVIDIA device’s properties, and check whether the status no longer reports Code 43.
Model specificity matters. A driver intended for a different GPU family, a different Windows architecture, or a different OEM implementation can leave the device unusable even when the installer itself completes. If you are unsure of the model, stop and recheck the name in Device Manager rather than choosing a similar-looking card.
Step 4: Bring Windows and system firmware up to date
NVIDIA recommends current Windows updates and current SBIOS. These updates can address the operating-system, firmware and device interactions that a driver reinstall cannot correct.
Check Windows 10 updates
- Open Settings.
- Choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install the updates offered for your system.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then check Device Manager again.
Check the system BIOS or SBIOS
Use the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support documentation to identify the current BIOS/SBIOS version and any available update. Follow that manufacturer’s instructions exactly; do not interrupt firmware installation or use a package intended for another model. After the firmware update and restart, verify the NVIDIA device status before moving to hardware checks.

Step 5: Verify power delivery and physical connections
Code 43 can reflect a hardware-side problem rather than a damaged driver. NVIDIA recommends checking the power supply and the card’s supplemental PCIe power connection.
- Power-supply capacity: Confirm that the installed PSU meets the graphics card’s minimum recommendation. Use the requirement for your exact GPU model, not a generic estimate.
- Supplemental connector: If the card requires a PCIe power connector, make sure it is fully seated in the card and connected to the appropriate PSU cable.
- Recent changes: If the error appeared after installing a new card, changing the PSU, moving the computer, or updating firmware, check those changes first and follow the manufacturer’s installation guidance.
- Laptop limits: On a laptop, do not treat the removable-desktop-card checks as applicable. Verify the laptop model’s OEM driver and firmware support instead.
Power checks should be done with the computer shut down and unplugged according to the manufacturer’s safety instructions. If you are not comfortable opening the case, have the manufacturer or a qualified technician perform the inspection.
Use the result to choose the next path
| Path | Risk | Specificity | Hardware dependence | Cost timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Device Manager uninstall and restart | Lowest of the listed options; it starts with a software change | Uses Windows’ attempted reinstall for the detected device | Does not test PSU, BIOS or physical-card condition | No replacement purchase; begin here |
| Manual NVIDIA or OEM driver | Still a software repair, but the package must match the model and Windows architecture | Highest driver specificity when the exact model and OEM are selected | Cannot correct inadequate power or a defective card | No hardware purchase; use the official support download |
| Windows and SBIOS updates | Requires following the manufacturer’s update process | Addresses the operating-system and firmware environment rather than one driver file | Can expose or resolve firmware and compatibility issues, but does not repair physical damage | No replacement purchase; use the existing system’s support channels |
| PSU, PCIe and card inspection | Physical work introduces handling risk; follow safety guidance | Targets the exact power and connection requirements of the GPU | Directly checks power delivery and the installed card | Only after software checks; support may be needed |
| Manufacturer support or replacement | Escalation after the lower-risk checks | Specific to the PC, GPU and warranty or service process | Appropriate when the card may be defective | Support or replacement cost is considered only after software, firmware and power checks |
If Code 43 remains
When the same error survives the Device Manager reinstall, the correct model-specific driver, Windows and SBIOS updates, and power checks, stop cycling through random driver packages. Microsoft directs unresolved cases to the hardware manufacturer, and NVIDIA lists replacing the graphics card when it may be defective.

Contact the right manufacturer
- Retail graphics card: Contact the card maker with the exact model, serial or support information requested, the Windows 10 build, driver version, and the steps already completed.
- Prebuilt desktop: Contact the PC manufacturer because its BIOS, power design and driver package may be specific to the system.
- Laptop: Start with the laptop manufacturer. Its NVIDIA driver and firmware package may differ from a generic desktop package.
Include a clear description that Device Manager reports Code 43, whether the error returned after restart, and whether the adapter appears under Display adapters. This prevents support from repeating only the initial detection step.

Replacement should be considered only after you have completed the driver reinstall, installed the correct model-specific driver, applied relevant Windows and SBIOS updates, and checked PSU capacity and PCIe power. Those checks do not prove that a card is healthy, but they remove several common software and installation explanations before money is spent.

Windows 10 support status and what it changes
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. A Code 43 repair can still involve reinstalling a compatible driver and checking the system firmware, but the operating system’s end-of-support status limits what future Windows updates can resolve. Record your Windows edition and build when contacting the PC or GPU manufacturer so support can state whether the hardware and driver remain supported.
Quick Recap
Practical stop conditions
- Stop after a successful reinstall: If Device Manager no longer reports Code 43 and the display works normally, do not replace the card solely because the error occurred once.
- Stop downloading mismatched packages: Recheck the GPU model, Windows edition and architecture, and OEM status instead of trying an unrelated driver.
- Stop before physical work if unsure: Have the manufacturer or a qualified technician check PSU and PCIe connections.
- Escalate persistent Code 43: Once software, updates and power checks are complete, manufacturer support is more useful than repeated reinstalls; a defective card may require replacement.
As an optional shortcut for the driver-focused checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore and scheduled scans.
