Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNVIDIA driver crashes have several different causes, and a brief display reset is not proof that your graphics card has failed. First classify the symptom, then collect the Windows error code and logs, try a rollback if the timing matches an update, and perform NVIDIA’s clean installation before moving to Safe Mode, Display Driver Uninstaller, chipset updates, or hardware support. The sequence below starts with the least disruptive recovery and escalates only when the evidence justifies it.
Identify what kind of crash you are seeing
The right fix depends on whether Windows recovered the display driver, one game crashed, the installer failed, or the whole system stopped. Write down exactly what happened before changing anything. This record prevents you from treating an application compatibility problem as a dead GPU or repeatedly reinstalling a driver when the failure is actually system-wide.

| Symptom | What it usually tells you | First focus |
|---|---|---|
| Screen flickers or goes black briefly, then returns | Windows may have reset the graphics driver. | Use the graphics-reset shortcut, then inspect the driver and logs. |
| “Display driver stopped responding and recovered” | The display stack recovered without a complete system stop. | Record the driver version and test rollback or a clean install. |
| One game or 3D application closes | The problem may be specific to that application, its settings, or an overlay. | Compare another game or 3D workload before blaming the driver. |
| Windows shows a blue screen or repeatedly reboots | This is a system-level failure, not merely a recoverable display reset. | Preserve the stop code and logs and plan a broader software or hardware diagnosis. |
| NVIDIA setup reports that installation failed | The installer may be blocked by an incorrect prior state, running software, or Windows Update activity. | Follow the installer-cleanup procedure rather than repeatedly launching the same setup. |
| Persistent artifacts, no display output, or crashes in several workloads | Software cleanup has not established a hardware cause, but the problem is no longer application-specific. | Check power, temperature, firmware, cabling, and obtain system or repair support. |
1. Recover the display and classify the failure
Reset a responsive graphics session
If Windows still responds to the keyboard, press Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft documents this shortcut as a way to reset the graphics driver. The screen should flicker briefly; audio may continue while the display stack restarts. If the picture returns, do not assume the issue is solved. Note the application that was running, whether the display recovered, and the exact time.
Reboot a locked system
If the shortcut does nothing and the computer is frozen, restart Windows. A forced power-off should be a last resort because unsaved work can be lost. After rebooting, check whether the same workload reproduces the failure. A single reset during one game is evidence of an incident; repeatable crashes in several applications require a deeper investigation.

Keep a useful incident record
- GPU model as shown in Device Manager.
- Windows edition and build.
- NVIDIA driver version and the date it was installed.
- Game or application name, version, graphics API or mode if known, and the exact action that triggered the crash.
- Whether the display recovered, the application closed, Windows blue-screened, or the monitor lost signal.
- Any recent driver, Windows, BIOS, firmware, overclock, undervolt, cable, monitor, or hardware change.
2. Check Device Manager and preserve evidence
Read the adapter status and problem code
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, record the device status, problem code, and error message.
- On the Driver tab, record the provider, date, version, and the available controls.
Microsoft notes that the Properties dialog exposes the problem-code value and its error message. Do not paraphrase the code when asking for help; copy it exactly. The code can distinguish a disabled device, a failed start, or an installation problem from a generic application crash.
Keep installation logs when setup fails
Windows device-installation logs and NVIDIA installer logs can show which package, file, permission, or service failed. Preserve the logs before cleaning them or attempting many more installs. If you contact support, include the Device Manager code, the Windows build, the GPU model, the driver package version, and the relevant log files. This is more useful than saying only that “the driver keeps crashing.”
3. Roll back when crashes started after an update
Rollback is the quickest test when a previously stable system began crashing immediately after a driver update. It returns Windows to the earlier package that is still available locally; it does not remove every trace of a driver installation.

- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Open the NVIDIA adapter’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason if Windows asks, confirm, and restart the computer.
- Run the same game or 3D workload that previously failed and compare the result.
Microsoft warns that Roll Back Driver can be unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver package. In that case, do not interpret the missing button as proof that rollback would fix the issue; proceed to a clean installation using a known driver package. If the older driver is stable, report the regression with the exact GPU, Windows build, driver version, and affected application.
4. Perform NVIDIA’s clean installation
A clean installation is appropriate when the driver files or configuration may be corrupted, when rollback is unavailable, or when the crash began without a clear update boundary. Download the package for the exact NVIDIA GPU and Windows version before removing anything. A package for a different GPU or operating-system edition can create a new failure instead of fixing the old one.
Prepare Windows before launching setup
- Save open work and close browsers.
- Exit games, video players, 3D applications, launchers, monitoring tools, and tuning utilities such as MSI Afterburner.
- Close overlays and any software that uses hardware acceleration where practical.
- Disconnect from activities that may trigger Windows Update during setup, while keeping the downloaded installer available locally.
- If you use an overclock or undervolt, return the GPU to its default settings for the test.
NVIDIA says background applications and Windows Update activity can interfere with installation. Closing them reduces the chance that a file, service, or display component is in use while setup changes it.

Run the installer with the clean option
- Right-click the downloaded NVIDIA installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Allow the package to verify or extract its files.
- When installation choices appear, select the custom or advanced path that exposes Perform a clean installation, when that option is offered.
- Continue through setup without launching games, browsers, players, or tuning utilities.
- Restart Windows when installation completes, even if setup does not insist on an immediate restart.
- Test one reproducible workload first, then test a second application before restoring overclocks or overlays.
A clean installation removes the prior display-driver configuration as part of setup. It is more disruptive than rollback, so keep the downloaded package and your incident notes in case you need to return to a different known-good version.

5. Recover from an NVIDIA installer failure
NVIDIA describes installer failures as having multiple possible causes. Repeating the same installer without changing the system state rarely adds information. Use this escalation sequence instead.
- Restart Windows and run the installer once more with browsers, games, video players, monitoring tools, and 3D applications closed.
- If setup still fails, remove the previous NVIDIA installation through the available Windows uninstall path, then restart.
- After rebooting, stop NVIDIA Windows services that remain active and close NVIDIA processes in Task Manager. Do not terminate an unfamiliar Windows process merely because its name looks similar.
- Run the downloaded installer as administrator and select the clean-install option when available.
- If the failure repeats, enable NVIDIA’s full installer logging and preserve the resulting installer and Windows SetupAPI logs.
Record the step at which setup stopped, the displayed error text, and whether the display adapter disappeared or gained a Device Manager code after reboot. Those details tell support whether the failure is package extraction, service state, device detection, or driver activation.

6. Use Safe Mode and Display Driver Uninstaller only as an advanced cleanup
Safe Mode plus Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a deeper removal path for persistent corruption after normal rollback and clean installation have not helped. NVIDIA presents DDU as an advanced option for people familiar with Safe Mode. It is not the first step for a single recoverable flicker.
Prepare before entering Safe Mode
- Download the correct NVIDIA driver package first and keep it available when networking is disabled in Safe Mode.
- Read DDU’s current instructions and understand how to return to normal startup.
- Save work and create a recovery option appropriate for your Windows installation.
- Note your current driver version, Device Manager code, and any custom display settings you will need to recreate.
Run the cleanup and reinstall
- Open Windows recovery options and choose Startup Settings, then restart into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU according to its instructions and select the NVIDIA display-driver removal action.
- Restart into normal Windows.
- Install the previously downloaded NVIDIA package as administrator, selecting clean installation when offered.
- Restart again and test the same workload without overclocking, undervolting, overlays, or monitoring utilities.
Because DDU removes display-driver components beyond a normal uninstall, an interrupted cleanup or an incorrect selection can leave you temporarily using Microsoft’s basic display driver. Keep the installer ready and avoid this path if you are not comfortable recovering from Safe Mode.
7. Update motherboard chipset drivers when intensive workloads expose instability
The graphics driver is not the only software involved in a demanding game. Current motherboard chipset drivers can matter when crashes appear only under intensive workloads or after a platform update. Obtain chipset packages from the motherboard or system manufacturer, install them using that vendor’s instructions, and reboot before retesting the NVIDIA driver. Do not substitute a chipset package for the graphics-driver cleanup; they address different parts of the platform.

Also check whether a BIOS or firmware change, new monitor cable, power connection, or peripheral preceded the crashes. Return one change at a time to its previous state so you can identify which change affects stability.
8. Separate an application problem from a system problem
Compare more than one workload
After a rollback or clean installation, test the game that originally failed and at least one other 3D application. If only one title crashes, compare its graphics settings, API mode, overlays, mods, and files with a fresh or known-good configuration. If several unrelated applications fail in similar ways, the problem is less likely to be limited to one game.
Use controlled settings
- Run the GPU at default clocks and voltage.
- Disable overlays and tuning software for the test.
- Use one monitor and a known-good display cable when possible.
- Record temperatures and power state rather than guessing from a single reading.
- Change only one setting between tests and write down the result.
These controls do not prove that a component is healthy, but they make the comparison meaningful. A crash that disappears only when an overclock is removed points to a different investigation than a crash that occurs at default settings across multiple applications.

Escalate after rollback and a clean installation if crashes continue, especially when they occur in more than one application. Bring your incident record, Device Manager problem code, Windows build, NVIDIA driver version, and preserved installer or SetupAPI logs. Include temperatures, power-state observations, overclock or undervolt settings, cable and monitor changes, BIOS or firmware updates, and the exact applications tested.
Repeated blue screens, visual artifacts, loss of display output, or failures at default settings deserve broader diagnosis by the system manufacturer or a qualified repair technician. The available software procedures can clean and replace driver packages, but they do not establish a universal hardware diagnosis or guarantee that every crash is caused by the driver. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling the same package when the evidence points to a system-level failure.
Quick Recap
Rollback versus clean installation
| Choice | Best trigger | Disruption | Evidence to collect | Next move if it fails |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roll Back Driver | Crashes began immediately after an update and an earlier package is available. | Usually quicker; uses the previous package retained by Windows. | Update date, driver versions, application reproduction, Device Manager status. | Perform NVIDIA’s clean installation with the correct package. |
| Clean installation | Suspected configuration corruption, unclear timing, or no rollback package. | Removes prior driver configuration and requires a restart. | Installer result, Device Manager code, NVIDIA and SetupAPI logs. | Retry after removing the prior installation, then consider Safe Mode plus DDU. |
| Safe Mode plus DDU | Persistent corruption after normal rollback and clean installation. | Highest disruption and user-skill requirement. | Before-and-after driver state and the DDU result. | Install the prepared package, then escalate to chipset, platform, or hardware diagnosis. |
A practical escalation checklist
- Classify the symptom: recovered reset, application crash, installer failure, blue screen, or lost output.
- Try Win+Ctrl+Shift+B if Windows is responsive; reboot if it is locked.
- Record the GPU, Windows build, driver version, application, timing, and exact message.
- Read Device Manager’s adapter status and problem code.
- Roll back if the timing points directly to an update and Windows offers the control.
- Otherwise perform NVIDIA’s clean installation with background applications closed.
- If setup fails, reboot, remove the prior installation, stop NVIDIA services and processes, and capture logs.
- Use Safe Mode and DDU only when normal cleanup has failed and you are prepared to recover.
- Install current motherboard chipset drivers when platform instability is part of the pattern.
- Test multiple applications at default settings, then escalate with complete evidence if failures persist.
