This separates an overlay problem from Instant Replay, desktop-capture, storage, codec, and game-specific failures.
ShadowPlay is now integrated into the NVIDIA App. Older guides may refer to GeForce Experience, the “Share” overlay, or “Privacy Control”; those instructions may not match the current interface.

Quick fixes to try first
- Open Alt+Z and confirm that NVIDIA Overlay is enabled in NVIDIA App → Settings.
- Restart the NVIDIA App and reboot Windows.
- Update the NVIDIA App and install the current Game Ready or Studio driver for your GPU.
- Use the on-screen Record button, then test the default Alt+F9 shortcut.
- Close Netflix, Spotify, Audible, protected browser streams, Discord streams, and similar applications before testing desktop capture.
- Confirm that the capture destination is a connected, writable local folder with enough free space.
- For a compatibility test, choose H.264, moderate quality, and a conventional resolution and frame rate.
Change one setting at a time and repeat the short recording test. That makes the cause much easier to identify.
1. If Alt+Z does not open
Alt+Z is the default shortcut for the NVIDIA App overlay. It can be changed, and another program may intercept it, so a missing overlay does not automatically mean the recorder itself is broken.

- Open NVIDIA App → Settings.
- Enable NVIDIA Overlay.
- Restart the NVIDIA App, then restart Windows.
- Install the current display driver and test Alt+Z again.
NVIDIA’s overlay troubleshooting page recommends display driver 565.90 or newer. That is the recommendation on that support page, not a claim that it is the latest driver or a timeless universal minimum. NVIDIA has also cited 551.52 or newer for certain Desktop capture features. Check the current driver offered for your GPU rather than relying on either number alone.
On Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, install Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack, reboot, and reinstall or repair the NVIDIA App if necessary. NVIDIA specifically includes this as part of its Alt+Z troubleshooting guidance. See NVIDIA’s overlay support article.
2. If Alt+Z opens a blank overlay
A blank panel or missing capture settings can occur when the NVIDIA App cannot access the Windows Videos folder. This is especially likely if the folder was redirected to a network share, disconnected external drive, or unusual location.

- Open File Explorer and check that your Windows Videos folder exists.
- Restore it to a local default Videos location if it was moved or redirected.
- Make sure your Windows account can access it.
- Restart the NVIDIA App and open Alt+Z again.
Do not place the folder inside a protected Windows system directory. NVIDIA documents this failure mode in its article about the blank or incomplete NVIDIA App overlay.
3. Test manual recording before Instant Replay
Manual recording and Instant Replay are separate functions. Manual recording begins a new recording; Instant Replay continuously maintains a rolling buffer and saves the previous segment only after you enable it and request a clip.

- Open Alt+Z.
- Choose Record and start a recording.
- Record for 10–15 seconds.
- Stop the recording from the overlay or press Alt+F9 again.
- Check the NVIDIA App Gallery and the configured capture folder.
If the on-screen button works but Alt+F9 does not, the encoder is probably functioning and the likely problem is a hotkey conflict. If neither method works, continue with the overlay, target, storage, and configuration checks below.
For Instant Replay, open Alt+Z → Settings → Video Capture, enable Instant Replay, and check the currently displayed Instant Replay length. Defaults and labels have changed between NVIDIA App versions, so do not rely on an old guide’s duration or save-clip shortcut.

4. Fix desktop capture and protected-content blocks
If you are recording the desktop, a browser, Discord, a tutorial, or a windowed application, check Alt+Z → Settings → Video Capture → Desktop capture. Desktop capture must be enabled for relevant desktop-recording scenarios.
NVIDIA says desktop capture may fail to start or may stop when it detects copy-protected content. The trigger can be a browser tab or background application rather than the game visible on screen. Close the specific tab showing the protected stream, along with applications such as Netflix, Spotify, Audible, and Discord streams, then retry.
When Discord streaming is involved, NVIDIA recommends disabling Desktop capture if protected-content detection prevents Instant Replay. Ordinary game capture may still work; the restriction concerns the desktop-capture mode. See NVIDIA’s guidance on protected content and Desktop capture and its Discord streaming interaction.

These restrictions are intentional. ShadowPlay should not be treated as a way to bypass DRM.
5. Check whether the game or application is supported
NVIDIA states that ShadowPlay supports DirectX-based games. NVIDIA App can also capture supported windows and the desktop; Desktop capture expands coverage to OpenGL, Java, web-based games, Minecraft, and other applications. That does not guarantee every title will work.
Test a normal DirectX game first. If it records successfully but one game does not, suspect that title’s anti-cheat system, launch method, protected-content behavior, or an overlay conflict. If game capture works while desktop capture fails, focus on Desktop capture and DRM settings rather than reinstalling everything.
NVIDIA’s game-support documentation describes the supported capture types. Borderless or windowed mode can be a useful isolation test, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Likewise, running a game as administrator may change overlay behavior in some configurations, but it is not a universal NVIDIA remedy.
6. Verify the recording destination
A recording can work correctly while appearing to be missing because it was saved somewhere unexpected—or fail to save because its destination is unavailable.

In the NVIDIA App’s Video Capture settings and Gallery, check:
- The destination drive is connected.
- The folder still exists.
- Your account can write to it.
- The drive has adequate free space.
- The path is local rather than a disconnected network location.
- OneDrive or another sync service is not holding up or relocating the file.
Temporarily choose a simple local folder inside your user’s Videos directory, record a short clip, and check it immediately. If that works, the original path or its permissions are the likely cause—not the encoder. NVIDIA’s release notes document version-specific fixes involving Instant Replay save locations and OneDrive synchronization, so these interactions can depend on the installed app version.
7. Resolve hotkey and overlay conflicts
Alt+F9 or Alt+Z may be intercepted by another application, a laptop utility, a game launcher, a different keyboard layout, or another recording tool. Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, OBS, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, and manufacturer performance overlays are useful suspects.
- Open Alt+Z → Settings and find the shortcut controls.
- Assign an unused key combination.
- Test the on-screen Record button.
- Temporarily close third-party overlays.
- Test with only the NVIDIA App overlay active.
For a clean isolation test, launch a supported DirectX game, record manually, and then re-enable other overlays one at a time. This is a diagnostic method, not a guaranteed NVIDIA fix.
8. Fix black, empty, or corrupted recordings
If a file is created but the picture is black, empty, or unusable, reduce the capture workload and remove advanced variables:

- Change the codec to H.264.
- Lower the resolution, frame rate, and quality or bitrate temporarily.
- Disable HDR for the first successful test.
- Record a supported DirectX game or a simple local window.
- Confirm that protected content is not open anywhere affecting Desktop capture.
After basic recording works, re-enable AV1, HDR, higher frame rates, or higher resolution one at a time. AV1 availability depends on the GPU generation and software support; NVIDIA documents AV1 recording for compatible hardware, including RTX 40-series GPUs. Not every GeForce card supports every codec, resolution, frame rate, or HDR combination. NVIDIA lists capture options from 360p through 8K/4320p, but the options shown to you depend on your hardware, display, codec, and app version.

9. If video works but audio or microphone capture does not
Treat missing audio as a separate problem from a recording that will not start. In the NVIDIA App’s capture settings, test system audio first, then test the microphone separately. Check that the intended Windows input device is selected, that its volume is not muted, and that another application has not claimed exclusive control.

If system audio is absent as well, check the selected output device and NVIDIA App audio settings. Do not change codecs or reinstall the driver solely for an audio-source problem unless the evidence points to a wider overlay failure.
10. Reinstall the NVIDIA App only after the targeted tests
- Exit the NVIDIA App completely.
- Reboot Windows.
- Install the current NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official download page.
- Reinstall the display driver if the overlay remains unavailable or the driver installation is clearly damaged.
- On Windows N, confirm that Media Feature Pack is installed.
Do not begin with registry edits, random folder deletion, disabled security protections, unofficial “ShadowPlay fix” downloads, or paid driver-updater utilities. Those steps can introduce new problems and do not address DRM blocks, invalid paths, hotkey conflicts, or game-specific incompatibilities.
If the issue remains, contact NVIDIA Support and include your GPU model, Windows edition, NVIDIA App version, driver version, affected game or application, whether Alt+Z opens, whether manual Record works, whether Desktop capture is enabled, and the exact notification or error.
When ShadowPlay cannot capture the target
Use OBS Studio when you need scenes, multiple sources, webcam layouts, separate audio tracks, or more control over window and display capture. It is more complex than ShadowPlay and does not override DRM restrictions.
