Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If a child site in a WordPress Multisite network shows “Object not found,” “The requested URL was not found on this server,” or an Apache 404, the request is usually failing before WordPress can resolve the site or permalink. In a subdirectory network, Apache must apply the network’s rewrite rules from the correct document root. A missing or ignored .htaccess, an incorrect installation path, or a mapped hostname pointing to the wrong virtual host can therefore break child-site links, /wp-admin/, /register/, or only one custom domain while the network homepage still works.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The reliable fix is to identify the failing scope first, then verify the subdirectory layout, restore the version-appropriate Multisite rewrite rules, confirm Apache is allowed to read them, refresh permalinks, and check URL and host mappings after any domain change. The steps below separate web-server routing problems from PHP, theme, and plugin errors so you change only what is necessary.

What an “Object Not Found” error means in Multisite
An Apache “Object Not Found” page is normally a routing failure. The web server received a URL but could not map it to a real file, directory, or WordPress front-controller request. WordPress never gets a chance to select the requested site or resolve its permalink.
Pretty permalinks depend on a per-directory .htaccess file. In a subdirectory network, that file belongs at the document root that serves the Multisite installation, not inside an individual child-site directory. The rules preserve real files and directories, handle special WordPress paths, add a trailing slash to wp-admin, and send other requests to index.php. If Apache is serving a different document root, is not loading overrides, or is using rules intended for a subdomain network, child-site URLs can fail even when the main network home page opens.

A mapped hostname introduces another layer. DNS only directs a name to an IP address; the Apache virtual host or Nginx server block must still select the correct document root and pass the request to the Multisite installation. A wrong host block can produce the same 404 wording as a broken rewrite file.
Start by defining exactly what fails
Record the complete URL, browser-visible message, and HTTP status before editing anything. Test the same paths from a private browser window if a cache may be involved:
- Open the network homepage.
- Open the affected child site homepage.
- Open one internal permalink on that child site.
- Open the child site’s
/wp-admin/URL. - Open
/register/if registration is enabled. - Open the mapped hostname, if the site has one, and compare it with the network’s original domain.
Use the result to choose the shortest investigation:
| Observed scope | Most likely layer | First remedy to try |
|---|---|---|
| Every network and child-site path returns 404 | Document root, server configuration, or missing/ignored network rules | Confirm the installation root, then check .htaccess, mod_rewrite, and override permissions |
| Network home works, but all child-site permalinks fail | Subdirectory Multisite rewrite rules | Compare the file with the official WordPress 3.5+ subfolder pattern and save Settings → Permalinks |
| Only one child site fails | That site’s path, domain mapping, or URL values | Check its assigned directory and database siteurl/home values |
| Original network domain works, mapped hostname fails | Virtual host/server block, document root, DNS, or mapped URL | Inspect host-level routing before changing WordPress content |
| URL reaches WordPress but displays a PHP/theme/plugin error | Application layer rather than routing | Enable temporary file logging on staging or a backup and inspect wp-content/debug.log |
This scope check prevents a common mistake: changing database URLs when Apache is simply serving the wrong directory, or editing rewrite rules when only one mapped domain is misconfigured.
Confirm the subdirectory installation layout
Find the document root
A subdirectory network expects the WordPress core files, network configuration, and network-level .htaccess rules at the document root that serves the network. Ask the host or inspect the active virtual host/server block to determine that root. The directory should contain the installation’s index.php, wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes directories.
Do not paste subdomain-network rules into a subdirectory installation, and do not place the network rules in a child site’s content folder. Legacy Multisite snippets can also differ from the rules generated for current WordPress versions. Use the rules generated for the installed version and network type.
Make a reversible backup
Before modifying .htaccess, wp-config.php, or database URL values, create a file and database backup or work on a staging copy. Keep the current files so you can restore them if a syntax error causes a server error instead of a 404.
Restore the Apache rules for a WordPress 3.5+ subfolder network
WordPress Developer Resources publishes the following pattern for Apache subfolder networks running WordPress 3.5 or later. Compare it with the generated file at the network document root rather than combining it with unrelated single-site, subdomain, or legacy examples.

RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(.*.php)$ $2 [L]
RewriteRule . index.php [L]
What each part does
RewriteEngine Onactivates Apache rewriting, while the authorization rule preserves the HTTP authorization header for requests that need it.RewriteBase /states that the network is served from the web root. A network installed below a different path needs the rules generated for that actual layout.- The
index.phpexclusion prevents a loop when the front controller is requested directly. - The
wp-adminrule redirects a site’s administrator path to a trailing slash, matching WordPress’s expected URL form. - The file and directory conditions let Apache serve existing assets without sending them through WordPress.
- The
wp-content,wp-admin, andwp-includespass-through rule, plus the PHP pass-through rule, handles shared core and site resources. - The final
index.phpfallback gives WordPress every remaining pretty-permalink request so it can identify the network site and content.
Save the file without adding a second competing rewrite block. A malformed directive can produce a 500 error; a valid file that Apache never reads leaves the original 404 unchanged.
Make sure Apache is actually reading .htaccess
Check mod_rewrite
Apache needs the rewrite module enabled for the rules to work. On managed hosting, request confirmation from support; on a server you administer, check the active module list and the virtual-host configuration. A missing module prevents the rewrite engine from routing pretty permalinks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check override permissions
The relevant directory configuration must permit overrides. If AllowOverride is disabled, Apache ignores the .htaccess file even when its contents are correct. A support discussion documents Object Not Found symptoms caused by Apache not evaluating a subdirectory’s .htaccess. Have the host enable the appropriate override setting for the network document root, then retest a child permalink.
Distinguish an ignored file from a bad file
If replacing the file with the known-good generated rules changes nothing, the problem is more likely the active document root, virtual host, or override policy than the rule text. If the response changes to a 500 error, restore the backup and have the host validate Apache syntax before trying again.
Regenerate WordPress’s permalink configuration
When the dashboard is available, go to Settings → Permalinks and select Save Changes without changing the structure. WordPress rewrites its permalink configuration, which can repair a stale or partially written rule set. Test the network, child-site homepage, one internal permalink, and /wp-admin/ afterward.
If the dashboard itself returns the 404, do not repeatedly reload it or change the permalink structure blindly. Restore the known-good network rules manually, verify Apache access, and involve the host if you cannot edit the document root. A permalink refresh cannot fix a hostname routed to the wrong server block.
Repair URLs after a domain or path change
Check both WordPress URL values
If the error began immediately after changing domains, inspect the affected site’s siteurl and home values in the database. They must use the intended protocol, hostname, and path for that site. A leftover old domain can redirect requests to a location that no longer exists, while an incorrect path can make a valid installation appear to be missing.
Confirm the directory assignment
Verify that the new hostname is assigned to the directory containing the Multisite installation. Do this before changing URLs again in the dashboard. Correct database values cannot compensate for a virtual host that points somewhere else.

Check network-wide and child-site mappings
For a mapped child domain, compare the failing hostname with the original network domain. If only the mapped name fails, leave the working network URL unchanged while the host-level route is corrected. Changing every site URL at once can turn a single mapping error into a network-wide outage.
Inspect virtual hosts and Nginx server blocks
Apache
Confirm that the virtual host for the mapped hostname uses the same document root as the Multisite network and permits the required overrides. The hostname must reach the vhost that serves the WordPress files, not a default site or an empty directory. DNS records, certificates, and redirects should all reference the intended host, but the decisive check is the active vhost-to-document-root mapping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNginx
Nginx does not process Apache .htaccess files. Its server block must select the correct root and implement the WordPress front-controller route for the Multisite layout. A DigitalOcean Multisite report describes an Object Not Found result after mapping a network site to another domain and directs the investigation toward Nginx server-block configuration. Have the host compare the failing hostname’s block with the working network block and ensure both pass requests to the same installation correctly.
Why DNS alone is insufficient
Adding an A or CNAME record only gets traffic to a server. It does not select the WordPress directory, configure rewrites, or tell Multisite which mapped site should answer. Treat DNS, the web-server host mapping, and WordPress’s URL/domain mapping as three separate checks.
Choose the remedy that matches your access level
| Access available | Safe action | What requires the host |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard only | Save Settings → Permalinks, test each scope, and record redirects. | Document-root, module, vhost, and server-block changes. |
| Filesystem access | Back up and compare the network-root .htaccess with the generated subfolder rules. |
Changes to AllowOverride, mod_rewrite, or Nginx configuration. |
| Database access | Verify the affected site’s siteurl and home values after a domain change. |
Fixing a hostname that points at the wrong directory. |
| Hosting control panel or root access | Confirm the active document root, virtual host, rewrite module, and error logs. | None, if you administer the server; otherwise ask support to apply and validate changes. |
This prevents an unnecessary escalation. A permalink save is appropriate when the server already routes requests and the dashboard works. It is not a substitute for a missing module or an incorrect server block. Conversely, editing database URLs is risky when only Apache’s document root is wrong.
Separate routing failures from PHP, theme, and plugin failures
Once the web server is returning the request to WordPress, use temporary debug logging to see whether application code fails. WordPress’s documented configuration is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
@ini_set( 'display_errors', 0 );
- Make a staging copy or confirm a current backup.
- Insert the constants in
wp-config.phpbefore the line that saysThat’s all, stop editing!. - Reproduce the failing request once.
- Inspect
wp-content/debug.logfor PHP errors, notices, and warnings. - Remove or disable debug mode after diagnosis, especially on a live site.
With display disabled, visitors do not see PHP diagnostics, while the log records application-level problems. An empty log combined with an Apache-generated 404 points back toward routing; a logged fatal error means the request reached WordPress and the next investigation belongs to the named theme or plugin.
Fixes for common symptom patterns
Only internal child-site links fail
Check the network-root rules, RewriteBase, and whether Apache honors overrides. Save Settings → Permalinks after the server configuration is correct.

/wp-admin/ fails but the homepage opens
Test the trailing-slash form, such as /wp-admin/, and verify the subfolder rule that redirects the no-slash form. If the redirect points to an old domain, inspect the site’s URL values and mapped hostname.
/register/ fails while ordinary pages work
Confirm that the request reaches the network’s front controller and that the child-site path is included in the rewrite pattern. A rule set copied from a single-site installation may omit the optional site-directory segment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a controlled retest and rollback plan
- Change one layer at a time: server rules, then permalink settings, then URL mapping. Record the time and file changed.
- Retest the same five URLs: network home, child home, internal permalink,
/wp-admin/, and/register/. - Compare both the status and the destination after redirects. A 301 to an obsolete hostname is a URL-mapping problem even if the original request no longer shows a 404.
- If a 500 appears after editing
.htaccess, restore the previous copy immediately and ask the host to validate syntax. - After a successful test, clear relevant caches and repeat from a private window and the mapped hostname.
This sequence keeps a single-site mapping mistake from becoming a network-wide outage and gives support a precise before-and-after record.
Prevent the error from returning
- Keep a copy of the generated Multisite rules with the WordPress version and network type noted.
- Document the network document root and every mapped hostname’s virtual-host or server-block assignment.
- After a domain change, test the network home, one child homepage, an internal permalink,
/wp-admin/, and/register/before declaring the migration complete. - Make URL and rewrite changes on staging first, with a restorable database backup.
- Use debug logging only for a controlled diagnostic window and keep error display disabled for visitors.
The practical rule is simple: if every child path fails, investigate the server and network rewrite layer; if one hostname fails, investigate its host mapping; if the request reaches WordPress and logs a PHP error, investigate the application. Following that order avoids destructive URL edits and restores the correct layer first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can saving Settings → Permalinks fix every Object Not Found error?
No. Saving permalinks helps when WordPress can write or refresh the network rules. It cannot enable Apache mod_rewrite, override a disabled AllowOverride setting, or correct a hostname routed to another server block.
Where should the Multisite .htaccess file go?
For a subdirectory network, it belongs at the document root that serves the Multisite installation, alongside the network’s index.php, wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes directories. It does not belong in an individual child site’s content directory.

Why does the homepage work while child permalinks return 404?
The homepage can be a real directory or file that Apache serves without rewriting. Child permalinks need the Multisite front-controller fallback in the network-root rules, so a missing, wrong, or ignored rule block can affect them selectively.
Does DNS configuration solve mapped-domain errors?
No. DNS only sends the hostname to an IP address. The Apache virtual host or Nginx server block must select the Multisite document root, and WordPress must have the correct mapped-site URL and domain assignment.
Should I use subdomain rules for a subdirectory network?
No. The patterns differ. Use the rules generated for the installed WordPress version and the network’s actual type. Combining subdomain, single-site, legacy, and subfolder snippets can create redirects or routing gaps.
What should I do if editing .htaccess changes the 404 to a 500?
Restore the backed-up file, then have the host validate Apache syntax and module support. A 500 generally indicates a configuration or directive problem, not a need to keep adding rewrite lines.
How can I tell whether a plugin caused the problem?
Enable WP_DEBUG and WP_DEBUG_LOG on staging or with a current backup, keep display disabled, reproduce the request, and inspect wp-content/debug.log. A logged fatal error indicates the request reached WordPress; an Apache-generated 404 with no application entry points back to routing.
Is it safe to change every site URL after one mapped domain fails?
No. First keep the working network domain as a control and verify the failing hostname’s virtual host, server block, directory, and database URL values. Changing all URLs can turn one mapping error into a network-wide outage.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: An Object Not Found page on a WordPress Multisite subdirectory is usually a routing-layer failure, not missing content. Identify whether all paths, one child site, or only a mapped hostname fails; verify the network document root; use the official WordPress 3.5+ subfolder rules; confirm Apache overrides or the Nginx server block; then refresh permalinks and repair URL mappings only when the evidence points there. Use temporary debug logging to separate a true PHP failure from a request that never reached WordPress.
