If OBS is counting more dropped frames while streaming a pre-recorded video to YouTube, first lower the video bitrate to fit your stable upload capacity. OBS says dropped frames usually mean the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the set bitrate—not that the video being played is pre-recorded. Then check the network path, ingest server and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
1. Confirm that it is a network dropped-frame problem
Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator while streaming. If the counter rises and the indicator turns yellow or red, OBS is signaling that its connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot maintain the configured bitrate. OBS explains that it drops frames to avoid buffering and preserve playback.
OBS Project says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That is specifically about the dropped-frames counter; it does not rule out rendering lag, encoder overload or a problem with the video playback setup. If the dropped-frame counter stays clear but the pre-recorded video itself stalls, investigate the playback configuration separately rather than treating it as a network dropped-frame issue.
2. Match the bitrate to upload capacity
Bitrate is the amount of data OBS sends each second. If your upload connection cannot sustain the selected video bitrate, frames can be dropped on the way to YouTube. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. YouTube advises keeping 20% headroom, so the total stream bitrate does not exceed available upload bandwidth. These are starting points, not guarantees: available upload capacity can change, and other devices or users may consume it.

Check the connection during the hours and conditions you expect to stream, then choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Its current encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends these video bitrates:
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not minimums that every stream must use. Do not raise your bitrate to match a table entry if your connection cannot sustain it. Confirm the codec, resolution and frame rate in OBS and follow YouTube’s current limits and stream-key instructions. YouTube also transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers.

3. Test the route from OBS to YouTube
Try another ingest server
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and test a different server if the service offers that option. OBS recommends this as a troubleshooting step. If another service works while YouTube does not, that can help identify a service-specific route issue; it does not repair the connection to YouTube.
Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet
If OBS is connected over Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection to the router or switch. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. A wired connection removes one possible source of fluctuation, but cannot rule out router congestion, ISP instability, or a poor route to YouTube.

Check software and network equipment
OBS lists VPNs, security software, network-prioritization or “optimizer” programs, outdated network drivers, modem or router issues, and ISP problems as possible causes. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the dropped-frame counter. If testing confirms that security software is interfering, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving it disabled.
4. Use OBS network options carefully
OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing for Windows. It also recommends leaving Bind to IP set to Default. You can try IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6. These options are diagnostics or fallbacks, not a substitute for fixing insufficient upload capacity or a faulty network route.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
OBS’s Dynamic Bitrate option can lower bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames. The trade-off is reduced video quality while the bitrate is lowered, and OBS cautions that this does not resolve the underlying connection problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Compare OBS’s counter with YouTube stream health
During a test, open YouTube’s Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator. YouTube displays timestamped error messages there. Its guidance says to consider lowering resolution if it reports an incorrect bitrate and the connection cannot sustain the selected resolution.

For a preflight, use YouTube’s encoder setup flow: enter the stream URL and key in OBS, start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then go live. The stream URL and key come from your YouTube live-stream setup; follow the current Live Control Room instructions. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
If YouTube reports a problem but OBS’s dropped-frame counter remains clear, compare the specific Live Control Room error with the encoder settings and stream-key configuration. If the network counter is clear and the playback of the pre-recorded video still freezes, review the OBS playback setup; the network troubleshooting guidance does not identify a particular Media Source or plugin as the cause.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frame counter rises; connection indicator turns yellow or red | Upload capacity, configured bitrate, network or ingest route | Lower bitrate, check available upload capacity, then test Ethernet or another server. |
| Dropped frames continue despite a lower bitrate | Interference, network equipment, ISP or route | Check VPNs, security or prioritization software, drivers, router/modem and ISP; compare another ingest server. |
| Dynamic Bitrate reduces drops but image quality falls | Connection cannot sustain the normal bitrate at that moment | Keep in mind the quality trade-off; investigate the network rather than treating Dynamic Bitrate as a permanent repair. |
| YouTube Live Control Room shows a timestamped error | Ingest or encoder settings identified by the message | Use the message to check bitrate, format, resolution and the current encoder instructions. |
| Pre-recorded video stalls while OBS shows no rising dropped-frame count | Playback configuration rather than the documented network symptom | Inspect your own OBS playback setup and logs; do not infer network drops from a stalled source alone. |
