Start by checking OBS Stats to identify whether you have encoding lag, rendering lag, or dropped network frames. Then reduce competing GPU work, simplify the fireplace scene, and lower output resolution or frame rate if needed. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator first. These steps address different bottlenecks; changing encoders will not fix every kind of overload.
Diagnose the kind of overload first
OBS must render and composite scenes even when encoding is handled by the CPU or a dedicated hardware encoder. A busy GPU can therefore cause rendering lag independently of the selected encoder. Check OBS Stats and the OBS log before changing settings, and note which counter or message indicates trouble.
- Encoding overload: the selected encoding path cannot process frames on time. Reducing output work or choosing a suitable hardware encoder may help.
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render or composite the scene on time, often because GPU resources are exhausted. Free GPU capacity and simplify the scene.
- Dropped frames or buffering: these can reflect network delivery or viewer-side conditions, not encoding. An encoder upgrade is not the right first fix for a connection problem.
OBS discusses these performance issues in its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance. A useful diagnosis also depends on your operating system, OBS version, CPU and GPU, output resolution and frame rate, encoder selection, scene sources, and OBS log or Stats counters.
Work through the OBS fixes in order
1. On Windows, run OBS as administrator
Close OBS, then right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator. OBS says this resolves GPU overload in many cases, but it is not a universal fix for encoder overload or network problems. If it does not help, continue to the next step.

2. Close competing GPU workloads
Exit other applications that are using the GPU, such as a game or GPU-computation workload, if they are safe to close. Check again in OBS Stats after closing them so you can see whether rendering or encoding performance changes.
3. Reduce output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and review Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values. Lower the scaled output resolution if the current target is too demanding. If 60 fps is not working, try 30 fps: fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work. Choose a target that produces a stable picture on your system rather than assuming one resolution or frame rate is right for every fireplace stream.

4. Simplify the fireplace scene
A static scene can still use substantial resources. Inspect the scene sources and remove work the stream does not need:
- Use fireplace media close to the size at which it appears in the scene, rather than processing unnecessarily oversized video.
- Remove filters that do not materially improve the picture.
- Limit browser sources and their dimensions. If an overlay is static, consider replacing it with an image source.
- Review hidden sources too; some continue using resources while not visible.
- If your scene collection has become unwieldy, split it into smaller collections and keep the live scene lean.
5. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point
Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a hardware-aware starting configuration. Treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee: system requirements alone do not establish that a particular computer can sustain your encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity together.

Choose an encoder only after identifying the bottleneck
OBS documents x264 software encoding and hardware options including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox. Availability depends on your hardware, operating system, drivers, encoder generation, and streaming service. OBS generally recommends modern hardware encoding because specialized hardware can take on encoding work with less impact on general CPU performance. Its Hardware Encoding guide says modern hardware encoders provide very good quality with minimal performance impact, while older generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate.
Hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload, but it does not remove OBS’s separate work of rendering scenes. Keep enough GPU capacity for scene composition, use current GPU drivers, and confirm compatibility for your exact system and platform before changing settings or buying hardware.

Consider a graphics card with a compatible hardware video encoder only if your diagnosis points to an encoding bottleneck and the card is compatible with your system. A new GPU is not a guaranteed fix for rendering lag; first check whether OBS is failing to render the scene on time.

There is no universal OBS configuration or published 24/7 reliability guarantee for an unspecified computer. After changing one setting at a time, observe Stats and review the OBS log while the actual fireplace scene is running. If overload returns, record the operating system, OBS version, CPU and GPU models and generation, output resolution and FPS, encoder, scene sources, and relevant Stats counters. Those details help distinguish a capacity problem from a connection issue.
