How to Fix OBS Freezing While Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube

Find out whether a YouTube loop freeze comes from OBS’s media source, local rendering, dropped frames, or viewer buffering, then apply the appropriate troubleshooting steps.

First identify what is freezing: the media source, OBS’s preview or render, the connection to YouTube, or playback for viewers. Those symptoms point to different fixes. For one local video, check the Media Source’s Loop setting; for a playlist, check VLC Video’s Loop Playlist. If OBS stutters or dropped frames rise, troubleshoot rendering, encoding, or network stability rather than changing loop settings blindly.

Identify where the freeze happens

Watch OBS and the stream separately when the problem occurs. A frozen preview does not by itself show that the YouTube stream has frozen, and buffering reported by viewers does not necessarily mean the local media source stopped.

  • Only the video source stops: Check its playback and loop configuration, then whether the file is still decoding.
  • OBS preview or interface stutters: Investigate local rendering and scene workload.
  • OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises: Investigate the connection to the stream server and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
  • Viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames: Treat this as a viewer-delivery issue, not proof that the media source or local connection froze.

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting). Its separate guidance explains that viewers can buffer even when OBS is not dropping frames (OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting).

Check the prerecorded-video source and loop settings

One local file: Media Source

OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for local media files. Open the source’s properties and confirm Loop is enabled. That property makes the file play again when it reaches the end (OBS Media Sources).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not confuse Loop with Restart playback when source becomes active. The latter controls playback when the source becomes active in a scene; it does not replace the loop setting. Likewise, Show nothing when playback ends controls the end state and is not what makes a file repeat.

A playlist: VLC Video

For a playlist, OBS documents VLC Video as an alternative. Check its Loop Playlist property; the OBS documentation lists this as On by default. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If the playlist stops at its end, verify the playlist loop setting rather than relying on the Media Source’s single-file loop option.

Reduce OBS rendering or encoding load

If the preview or rendered output stutters, a source setting may not be the cause. OBS workload varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Compatible baseline hardware does not guarantee smooth performance for a particular streaming workload (OBS System Requirements).

  1. Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary sources and effects, and reduce the number or resolution of sources where practical. OBS notes that sources may use resources even when they are not visible.
  2. Lower output demand as a test. If the current resolution or frame rate overloads the system, try a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests reducing 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working. This reduces workload but also changes the output’s detail or smoothness.
  3. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick troubleshooting step for some GPU overload cases; it is not a universal fix.
  4. Consider a compatible hardware encoder if CPU encoding appears to be the bottleneck. Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but platform and hardware support differ, and older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. Check OBS’s compatibility notes for NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox before switching (OBS Hardware Encoding).

These are diagnostic adjustments, not proof of a particular root cause. If reducing scene complexity or output load changes the symptom, that is useful evidence that local rendering or encoding demand is involved.

Follow the network or viewer-buffering branch

If OBS reports dropped frames

Rising dropped frames point toward connection stability or the ability of the network path to sustain the configured bitrate. They do not establish that the prerecorded file stopped looping. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and compare the symptom with the dropped-frame counter (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).

If viewers buffer but OBS does not drop frames

Viewers may have different network and device conditions, and delivery or transcoding capabilities can affect playback. Check whether reports come from multiple viewers and devices before changing a local source that appears to keep playing in OBS. OBS treats viewer buffering separately from dropped frames (OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting).

Collect the details needed to diagnose an unresolved freeze

There is not enough information in “OBS freezes” alone to identify one cause. If the steps above do not isolate it, record the details below before changing several settings at once:

  • Operating system and OBS version.
  • Whether the source is Media Source or VLC Video, and whether it is one file or a playlist.
  • The file’s container and codec, and whether the freeze happens at the same point or only after a loop.
  • Whether OBS’s preview, interface, or only the source freezes.
  • Whether the dropped-frame counter increases and whether viewers report buffering.
  • Resolution, frame rate, encoder, hardware, and the relevant OBS log.

OBS cautions that meeting system requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream or record a particular workload smoothly (OBS System Requirements).
