If OBS keeps trying to reconnect to YouTube, first check whether its dropped-frames counter is rising and read the stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room. Rising dropped frames usually point to an unstable or overloaded network path; a specific startup, stream-key, URL, SSL, or timeout error points instead to an ingest setup problem. Match the fix to the symptom rather than changing several settings at once.
Identify whether it is a network or ingest problem
OBS Project says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server. A connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate may drop frames and, if enough are lost, disconnect. OBS describes these problems as typically outside OBS’s control. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide and its troubleshooting FAQ.
| What you observe | Likely branch | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames climb, connection status turns yellow or red, or YouTube reports an unstable incoming stream | Network instability or insufficient upload headroom | Lower bitrate and test the network path |
| YouTube reports an encoder startup, stream-key, URL, SSL, or timeout error | Ingest configuration or protocol | Follow the error message; check the key, URL, or RTMPS support as applicable |
Before adjusting anything, note whether OBS still shows local video and audio, whether its dropped-frames counter is increasing, and YouTube’s exact Stream health status. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance says the health view provides status messages and instructions.
Fix a connection that is dropping frames
1. Lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS Project’s 2024 guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Base your choice on upload capacity that remains stable during a stream, not a brief peak-speed result, and retest under a similar workload. YouTube also recommends testing upload speed and choosing a quality your connection can reliably support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s published recommended H.264 ingest rates, as accessed in 2026, include:
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not minimum requirements for every stream. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the stability of your upload. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide also specifies CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds); it lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. Use settings supported by your chosen encoder and YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube’s advice is simple: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

2. Check the local network path
- If you are on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet; OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- If the modem or router is having connectivity trouble, restart it. If the cause remains uncertain, OBS recommends asking your ISP before replacing equipment.
- If the problem began while using a VPN, test without it to see whether the route is unstable.
These checks address different possible fault points; none is a guaranteed fix for every disconnect. A wired connection helps isolate Wi-Fi as a variable, but it cannot correct congestion or routing problems farther along the ISP-to-ingest path.
3. Isolate software that may interfere
Firewall or antivirus software can interfere with OBS connections. Temporarily disable only the relevant protection to test, then restore it and add an OBS exception if the test indicates interference. Do not leave security software disabled. Also check for network “boost,” “optimizer,” or prioritization utilities and outdated network drivers. OBS gives Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples, not a complete list.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Review OBS network settings
Open Settings → Advanced → Network and check that Bind to IP is set to Default. On Windows, you can test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. You can also test IPv4 Only; if it does not help, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
Dynamic bitrate can lower quality during congestion to reduce dropped frames. Treat it as a fallback when you cannot fix the underlying cause: it may help maintain continuity, but does not repair an unstable network.

Fix a YouTube key, URL, or RTMPS error
Update the stream key when YouTube indicates a startup or key error
For an encoder startup error, YouTube directs third-party encoder users to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Confirm that the selected key and stream URL belong to the intended stream. A key correction is relevant to a setup error; it will not restore upload capacity when OBS is clearly dropping frames.
Check RTMPS, SSL, and timeout errors
For an RTMPS error, YouTube says to verify that the server URL uses RTMPS rather than RTMP and that the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, YouTube also suggests specifying port 443. For a timeout, check the URL and confirm encoder support. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL encryption. Follow the specific message in YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting instructions rather than changing protocol settings when the evidence points to network instability.

Escalate if reconnect attempts still fail
- If OBS continues dropping frames after bitrate, local network, and software checks, test outbound connectivity and contact your ISP. Congestion or routing outside your home can affect the path to the ingest server.
- If your outbound connection appears stable but YouTube Stream health remains unhealthy, keep the OBS log and YouTube’s exact status message for support.
- Do not assume reinstalling OBS or buying new networking hardware is a universal remedy; neither addresses every possible fault.
Official guidance does not establish a universal reconnect retry interval, retry count, or single setting that explains failed attempts. Network options can also differ by platform; OBS identifies network optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows-only in its troubleshooting guide. The useful evidence is the dropped-frames pattern and the exact message from YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot (pooled across active slots), 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
