If OBS keeps stopping a 24/7 YouTube live stream, first identify where it stops: OBS may still be open but losing its connection, the encoder may be struggling, or YouTube may no longer be accepting the feed. The exact OBS status and YouTube Live Control Room message determine which fix to try; there is no single setting that reliably solves every cause.
Capture the failure before changing settings
At the next interruption, note the time and record what both OBS and YouTube report. Save the OBS log covering the event. Changing several settings before capturing this evidence can make the cause harder to identify.
- Does OBS remain open? Note its stream status and whether the dropped-frames counter is increasing or it reports a disconnect.
- Does OBS show an encoder error, or is CPU load unusually high? Check whether the local preview and audio look and sound normal.
- What does YouTube Live Control Room show in stream health or its error message?
- Did the problem occur while starting the stream, or after it had been running? Note how long it ran and whether the local recording continued.
YouTube recommends checking stream-health messages, encoder errors, CPU load, and the encoder’s picture and sound. If you need a specific diagnosis, the OBS log around the disconnect and the exact Live Control Room message are the most useful details to share.
Find the failure branch
| What you see | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects; YouTube reports an unstable or missing feed | Connection stability, upload capacity, bitrate, and the network path. |
| OBS reports an encoder error, high load, or unhealthy picture or sound | Encoder configuration, CPU load, sources, and audio/video routing. |
| The stream fails to start and YouTube or OBS reports a stream-key or authentication error | The current YouTube stream key and encoder setup. |
| OBS appears to be sending, but YouTube’s stream state or health indicates a problem | Compare OBS status and logs with YouTube’s Live Control Room message; do not assume the cause from OBS alone. |
If OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects
Dropped frames point to the connection between OBS and the remote ingest server, or to a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Treat the counter as a reason to test the network path before reinstalling OBS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare bitrate with stable upload capacity
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your stream. Compare the stream’s configured bitrate with stable outbound capacity, not just the speed advertised by your internet plan.
- OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for a bitrate target. It is a starting point, not a guarantee: available capacity can vary, especially when other devices or applications are using the connection.
- If the connection cannot consistently sustain your bitrate, lower it and test again. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists these H.264 recommendations: 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are not universal targets: the appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s recommendations also vary for AV1 and H.265.
YouTube recommends an upload-speed test, bandwidth headroom, and choosing a bitrate suitable for the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Lowering bitrate may reduce dropped frames when the connection is the constraint, but it also reduces stream quality.
Test the local network path
- If OBS is on Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- Temporarily isolate a VPN, firewall or antivirus setting, or bundled network-optimization utility to see whether it is interfering. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to leave security protection off. If security software is confirmed to be the cause, turn it back on and configure an OBS exception as appropriate.
- Check network drivers, router or modem, cables, and other equipment before replacing hardware. If local checks do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP: routing congestion or provider-side changes may be outside your control.
Windows-only OBS network options
OBS’s connection guide documents Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as settings some users report as helpful; they are not guaranteed fixes. The same guide documents leaving Bind to IP at Default. If you have changed it to IPv4-only and that makes no difference, return it to Default. Dynamic bitrate adjustment is marked Beta in the guide: it can lower quality to adapt to connection trouble, but OBS says it does not solve the underlying cause.

If the encoder or output looks unhealthy
If the preview, sound, or encoder status is unhealthy, investigate the encoding and sources rather than treating the problem as a dropped-frames issue. Check OBS’s encoder error and CPU load, and compare the outgoing picture and audio with what YouTube reports. If the encoder output itself looks bad, inspect sources and audio/video routing or test another encoder. If the output looks healthy but YouTube reports poor connectivity, return to the network checks.
For YouTube, the current encoder settings guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. Confirm that your encoder’s settings match the resolution, frame rate, and codec you actually use rather than copying a bitrate intended for a different output.

If the stream will not start, check the stream key
A YouTube stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and acts like a password. If OBS returns an encoder-startup or authentication error, open YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the current key, and update the encoder using YouTube’s stream settings and troubleshooting guidance. This check is especially relevant when the stream fails at startup; a stream key is not the default explanation for a broadcast that ran successfully for hours before stopping.
Protect recordings and test a continuity plan
Do not depend on the YouTube archive as the only copy of a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but its archive guidance warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Enable local recording, confirm the file is growing while the stream runs, and verify that the recording is usable.

YouTube’s live-streaming event tips describe testing backup-encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. This is a way to test a planned backup design—not a promise that OBS will automatically recover seamlessly from every interruption. Check your encoder version, configuration, and logs before relying on reconnect or failover behavior.
