YouTube does not document a built-in setting that automatically restarts a live broadcast after it has ended. Its auto-start and auto-stop controls let an encoder start or stop streaming; they are not a promise to relaunch a completed broadcast. If you want viewers sent elsewhere when a stream ends, YouTube Live Redirect can hand them off to a Premiere or another live stream—but it does not restart the broadcast.
What “restart” means matters
A brief encoder or network interruption, a broadcast that is still running, and a broadcast YouTube has ended are different situations. The official YouTube guidance distinguishes starting or stopping an encoder stream from ending it; it does not document a universal automatic-restart feature for a completed broadcast. Whether a third-party encoder can launch a fresh broadcast is specific to that encoder and must be checked in its current documentation.
- Temporary interruption: Check the encoder’s reconnection instructions. Reconnecting after a drop is not necessarily the same as starting a new broadcast.
- Still-open event: The encoder may be able to resume sending content, depending on the event and encoder behavior. Do not assume this is a fresh broadcast.
- Ended broadcast: YouTube’s documented controls do not guarantee an automatic relaunch. A new broadcast may require a new event or other encoder-specific setup.
What YouTube’s native controls do
Auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance describes these as controls for starting or stopping streaming from the encoder. Settings can be reused with stream settings, but the documentation does not describe them as restarting a broadcast after it has finished.
Ending an encoder-based stream
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive behavior, not a restart mechanism.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live Redirect is a viewer handoff
Live Redirect can send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream after the current stream ends. Prepare the destination first. YouTube notes that viewers may need to wait about two seconds for their screens to reload. This redirects viewers; it does not revive or restart the ended broadcast.
How to test an encoder’s automatic relaunch
If your goal is for a new broadcast to begin automatically, first establish what your encoder actually supports. YouTube’s general documentation does not verify any particular third-party encoder’s ability to do this.

- Identify the intended behavior. Decide whether you need recovery from a brief disconnect, resumption of an event that remains open, or creation of a new broadcast after the previous one has ended.
- Read the current instructions for your exact encoder. Look for explicit support for a finished broadcast, not just reconnect or retry behavior. Confirm whether it creates a new YouTube event, resumes an open event, or only reconnects after a temporary interruption.
- Check Live Control Room settings. Review auto-start and auto-stop, but treat them as encoder start/stop controls—not as proof of automatic restart.
- Run an unlisted test before relying on automation. Confirm what happens to the YouTube event, its watch page, and its archive when the encoder stops and attempts to launch again. These are important behaviors to verify; YouTube’s general guidance does not promise a particular encoder’s results.
- Preview and monitor the test. YouTube recommends testing before an event, previewing in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health and audio/video. Its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance cover preparation and stream quality.
If the stream will not start
A start error is not evidence that YouTube should restart a finished broadcast. For an encoder start problem, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises obtaining the stream key in Live Control Room and updating it in the encoder when needed.
- The encoder reports an invalid key or cannot connect: Check the current stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with that key.
- The event ends and nothing starts again: Check whether the encoder supports launching a new broadcast after completion; ordinary reconnect behavior may cover only temporary interruptions.
- Viewers need a destination after the stream: Prepare a Premiere or another live stream and configure Live Redirect rather than treating it as a restart.
For planned events, YouTube also recommends testing in advance, monitoring the stream, stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube, and checking accessibility and local archive files. The YouTube live streaming tips provide operational guidance.
