Office error 0x80070005 is an activation failure. It can leave Microsoft 365 or a perpetual Office edition showing Unlicensed Product and disable editing and other features. Start by confirming the Microsoft account and license, then update Office, correct Windows time settings, run the activation troubleshooter, and use Online Repair. Only use the registry procedure when the error began after a Windows update.
The title sometimes appears as 0X800070005, with an extra zero. Microsoft’s Office documentation uses 0x80070005. Compare the exact code displayed in Office before changing permissions or the registry.

What 0x80070005 means in Office
In Microsoft Office, 0x80070005 is documented as an activation error. The typical message is: “We’re sorry, something went wrong and we can’t do this for you right now. (0x80070005).” Activation is the entitlement check that confirms the signed-in account is allowed to use the installed edition. When that check fails, Office can show Unlicensed Product and restrict features even though the programs remain installed.
The code does not identify one universal cause. A wrong Microsoft account, an expired or missing subscription, duplicate Office installations, an outdated Office build, incorrect Windows time information, or permissions changed after a Windows update can all put activation into a failure state. Microsoft does not publish a success-rate figure or a single root cause for every installation, so work through the checks in order instead of assuming the registry is always responsible.

Confirm the code, account and Office entitlement
Check the exact error in an Office app
Open Word, Excel or another installed Office application and read the activation message. Confirm that it is 0x80070005, not the similarly written 0X800070005. This distinction matters because Microsoft’s registry instructions are tied to the documented Office code. If Windows itself, rather than an Office application, reports a code, use the Windows-specific workflow described later in this article.
Sign in with the account that owns Office
In the Office app, open File > Account and review the signed-in identity. Sign out if necessary and sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased Microsoft 365 or the perpetual Office license. Microsoft notes that using the wrong account can produce the message “We couldn’t find any Office products.” A personal account and a work or school account can have different entitlements, so use the identity associated with the purchase or assignment.
Check subscription or license status
Still on File > Account, check whether the product is listed and whether the subscription is active. Troubleshooting can repair an activation process, but it cannot create an entitlement that the account does not have. If the account has no valid license, obtain a legitimate current Office license before expecting activation to succeed. Regional availability, edition, and billing terms vary, so verify those details with Microsoft or an authorized seller.

Look for duplicate Office installations
More than one Office copy can create an activation conflict. Open Windows’ installed-apps list and look for multiple Microsoft 365 or Office entries, including older perpetual editions. Record the edition you intend to keep. Remove an unwanted duplicate through Windows’ normal uninstall process, restart the PC, and then test the retained installation. Do not remove the only copy until you have confirmed that you can reinstall or repair the licensed edition.
Apply the low-risk fixes first
These checks do not alter the registry and should be completed before advanced permission changes.
1. Update Office
- Open Word, Excel or another Office application.
- Choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Allow the update to finish. Close and reopen the Office application when prompted, then retry activation from File > Account.
If Update Options is missing, the installation may be managed by an organization or may use a different update channel. In that case, contact the organization’s administrator or continue with the account and repair checks rather than changing update settings blindly.

2. Correct Windows date, time and time zone
Activation requests depend on accurate system time. In Windows Settings, open the date and time page, verify the date, clock, and time zone, apply the correct values, and then restart the Office application. If the computer was recently moved between time zones or resumed with an incorrect clock, this check is especially important. Do not proceed to registry editing until the clock is correct.

Close all Office windows. Start Word or another Office application with Run as administrator, then retry activation. This temporary test can show whether the failure is related to the current process’s permissions. If activation works only when elevated, do not permanently run every Office program as administrator; continue to the repair or support steps to address the underlying configuration.
4. Restart and test one application
After updating Office or correcting time settings, restart Windows. Open one Office application, sign in when asked, and check File > Account. Testing one application at a time makes it clear whether the change affected activation or whether the same error appears across the suite.

Run Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter
Microsoft provides a Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter that can identify and fix activation issues on the same Windows PC where Office is installed. It requires Windows 10 or later. It is not a remote check for another computer: run it locally on the affected machine.
- Close Office applications and save any open work.
- Open Microsoft’s activation troubleshooter from Microsoft Support and start it on the affected Windows PC.
- Follow the prompts for the installed Office or Microsoft 365 account. Sign in with the account that owns the license when requested.
- Allow the tool to complete its checks and apply any proposed correction.
- Restart Windows, open an Office application, and verify the product status under File > Account.
If the troubleshooter cannot run, confirm that the PC uses Windows 10 or later and that you are running it on the same computer as the Office installation. If it completes without restoring activation, continue with Online Repair rather than repeating the same scan.

Microsoft’s broader activation guidance directs users to Online Repair after the account, update, time, and troubleshooter checks. Online Repair is more comprehensive than a quick repair because it can replace damaged Office components; it may require Office to download files again and can take longer.
Best Value
- Close every Office application.
- Open Windows’ installed-apps or Programs and Features settings.
- Select the Microsoft 365 or Office entry that matches the licensed installation and choose its Modify or Change option.
- Choose Online Repair, confirm the repair, and let it finish without shutting down the PC.
- Restart Windows, open Word or another Office application, and sign in with the licensed Microsoft account.
- Check File > Account for the product name and activation status.
Repairing the installation does not grant a license. If Online Repair completes but the account still has no matching entitlement, the status will remain unlicensed until the correct license is associated with that account. If repair does not restore activation despite a valid entitlement, Microsoft recommends contacting Microsoft Support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the registry procedure only after a Windows update
Microsoft documents a specific permission repair for Office error 0x80070005 when the problem started after a Windows update. This is the highest-risk step in the sequence. Registry Editor mistakes can cause serious Windows problems, so back up the registry first and do not use this procedure for a general activation failure that has no post-update trigger.
Before you begin
- Confirm that the exact Office code is 0x80070005.
- Confirm that the error began after a Windows update.
- Close every Office application.
- Create a registry backup before changing permissions.
- Use an account with permission to edit the affected registry key.
Apply the documented permissions
- Press the Windows key, type Registry Editor, and open it. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- In Registry Editor, select HKEY_USERSS-1-5-20. Do not substitute a different key because its name looks similar.
- Use the key’s permissions command to add the currently logged-in user.
- Grant that user Full Control.
- Add NETWORK SERVICE and grant it Full Control as well.
- Enable inheritance for child objects so the permission applies to the key’s child objects as Microsoft specifies.
- Apply the changes, close Registry Editor, and restart Windows.
- Open an Office application, sign in with the licensed account, and check activation under File > Account.
Permission dialogs can differ slightly between Windows releases and managed computers. If you cannot identify the logged-in account, cannot add the principals, or receive an access-denied message while changing the key, stop rather than guessing. Restore the backup if a change produces new Windows behavior, and ask Microsoft Support or your organization’s administrator to complete the repair.

Do not confuse Office activation with Windows activation
Microsoft also documents 0x80070005 for a Windows activation access-denied case involving SELF DCOM permissions. That is a different product workflow. The Windows article’s DCOM instructions are not an Office activation fix. Do not change DCOM permissions merely because the number matches; first establish whether the message came from an Office application or from Windows activation itself.
Choose the next step by trigger and risk
| Remedy | Use it when | Risk and scope | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account and entitlement check | Office cannot find products, or the signed-in identity may be wrong | Low risk; confirms Office activation entitlement | Sign in with the purchasing account and verify the license |
| Office update, clock check, restart, administrator test | General activation failure before advanced changes | Low risk; affects the Office installation and local session | Run the activation troubleshooter if the code remains |
| Microsoft activation troubleshooter | Microsoft 365 activation problems on Windows 10 or later | Low risk; runs on the affected PC | Use Online Repair if activation is still unavailable |
| Online Repair | A valid license exists but Office components or activation remain damaged | Moderate disruption; Office downloads and repairs installation files | Restart and test; contact Microsoft Support if it fails |
| Registry permissions | 0x80070005 began after a Windows update | Highest risk; registry backup and careful permissions are required | Restart Office and seek support if the key cannot be edited |
| Windows DCOM procedure | Windows itself reports its separate activation access-denied case | Different scope; not an Office remedy | Follow Windows-specific support guidance, not the Office registry steps |
Verify that Office is restored
After any successful change, open the affected Office application and go to File > Account. Confirm that the intended product is listed, the correct Microsoft account is shown, and the activation warning has disappeared. Create or edit a small test document and close the application normally. If the warning returns on the next launch, recheck for duplicate installations and the account that owns the license before repeating repair steps.
Microsoft states that restoring all Microsoft 365 or Office features requires fixing the problem that caused activation to fail. If the account has a valid entitlement, the low-risk checks, troubleshooter, Online Repair, and—only for the documented post-update trigger—the registry procedure provide a progressively more invasive path. If none restores activation, contact Microsoft Support with the exact code, Office edition, Windows version, account used, and the step at which the failure persisted.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
