OneDrive error 0x80070032 means Windows received the message “The request is not supported.” It commonly appears when opening, copying, or downloading a OneDrive item through a desktop shortcut or the Windows sync folder. Microsoft has not identified one universal cause. In practice, the failure can involve the OneDrive file-provider connection, Files On-Demand, a stalled sign-in or sync operation, an outdated client, or a damaged shortcut.
Work through the fixes below in order. Start with the low-risk checks, then reset OneDrive only if the account and file work online. The reset is designed to preserve cloud data, but it disconnects sync connections and can require you to choose folders again.

What error 0x80070032 means
The exact message reported for this code is “Error 0x80070032: The request is not supported.” A report can involve a single desktop shortcut, a file copied from the OneDrive folder, or several items that are still visible but cannot be opened. The code describes a failed Windows request; it does not, by itself, prove that the file is missing, that your storage is full, or that malware is present.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →OneDrive can show a cloud file in File Explorer before the file has been downloaded. Windows then asks the OneDrive provider to fetch the content. If the provider is not running correctly, the account is not signed in, a sync operation is still processing, or a shortcut points to an invalid location, Windows can return 0x80070032.

Because Microsoft does not assign a single confirmed root cause to this code, avoid treating any one registry edit, system-file command, or storage upgrade as a guaranteed cure. The sequence below separates a cloud or account problem from a local Windows client problem and limits the risk of losing unsynced work.
Choose the next step by symptom
| What you see | Most useful first action | Risk and scope |
|---|---|---|
| One desktop shortcut fails, but the file opens online | Recreate the shortcut, keeping the complete filename and extension | Low impact; affects only that shortcut |
| A cloud-only file will not open or download | Confirm sign-in, keep OneDrive running, and allow Files On-Demand to finish processing | Low impact; waiting may be necessary for a large workload |
| Several personal OneDrive files fail | Update Windows and OneDrive, restart, then reset OneDrive if needed | Reset disconnects sync and may require folder selection again |
| A work or school library reports sync problems | Use the older OneDrive for Business app’s View sync problems > Repair option | Repair archives unsynced local changes for comparison |
| The computer runs Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 | Upgrade Windows or use OneDrive on the web | The OneDrive sync app is no longer supported on those versions |
1. Update Windows and OneDrive, then restart
Install every available Windows update before changing OneDrive settings. Also install the latest OneDrive client offered for your Windows edition. Microsoft’s Files On-Demand connection guidance specifically recommends both updates followed by a restart.
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install the available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- After Windows starts again, open OneDrive from the Start menu or the notification-area cloud icon. If it offers an update or sign-in prompt, complete it.
- Try the same download, copy, or shortcut again. Test one small file first so you can tell whether the provider connection is responding.
Do not assume that a visible OneDrive folder means the client is current. A recent Windows update, a new sign-in, or a large sync workload can leave the client processing changes for a while. If the error remains, continue rather than repeatedly clicking the same file.
2. Verify the file on OneDrive.com
Open OneDrive.com in a browser and sign in with the same personal, work, or school account used by the Windows client. Locate the file and open it in the browser. This check is the quickest way to separate a cloud or account issue from a local Windows synchronization issue.

If the file opens online
The cloud copy is available, so concentrate on the Windows client, Files On-Demand state, or shortcut. Leave the browser tab open while you repair the local connection. You can continue working through the website or the OneDrive mobile app while Windows is being repaired; Microsoft says your OneDrive files and folders remain safe and accessible through those services.
If the file is missing or will not open online
Check that you used the correct account and that you are looking in the correct folder or library. A personal OneDrive account and a work or school library can have different files and permissions. If the item is absent online, resetting the Windows client will not recreate it; resolve the account, sharing, permission, or server-side issue first.
3. Check Files On-Demand and the OneDrive sign-in state
Files On-Demand lets File Explorer display cloud-only files without storing their full contents locally. A cloud-only item must be downloaded before an application can open it or before Windows can complete a copy. The download can take time, especially during a large sync or immediately after an update.
- Confirm the OneDrive cloud icon is present in the notification area. If it is not visible, open OneDrive from the Start menu.
- Click the cloud icon and check whether OneDrive asks you to sign in, reports that processing is paused, or says it is processing changes. Complete sign-in and resume syncing if a control is offered.
- In File Explorer, right-click the affected file or folder and choose Always keep on this device when that option is available. This requests a local copy rather than leaving the item cloud-only.
- Wait for the download to finish before opening or copying the file. Keep the computer connected to the internet and avoid shutting down while the status is changing.
- Retry with a small, known-good file from the same folder. If that file works, the original may still be downloading or may have a naming, permission, or application-specific problem.
Microsoft lists several reasons processing can take time: files that are open, a large sync workload, a pending sign-in, and a recent sign-in or computer update. Close applications that may be editing the file, allow the queue to settle, and then test again. Do not delete the OneDrive folder to force a download; that can create a separate data-management problem.

4. Reset OneDrive on Windows
Resetting is the main local repair when the account works online but the Windows client still returns 0x80070032 across files. Microsoft states: “You won’t lose files or data by resetting OneDrive.” A reset removes the local OneDrive data file and rebuilds the client’s settings. It does, however, disconnect sync connections and may require previously selected folders to be selected again.
Run the reset command
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /resetand press Enter. - Wait several minutes. The cloud icon may disappear while OneDrive resets; that is expected.
- If Windows reports that it cannot find the file, press Win+R again and try
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset. - If that path also fails, try
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset. - When the reset finishes, open OneDrive from the Start menu. Sign in if prompted and allow the client to rebuild its connection.
After the reset
Check the OneDrive settings and confirm that the folders you need are selected for synchronization. Wait for the status to settle before testing the original file. If you had local changes that had not synchronized before the reset, look for those files in their original local locations and compare them with the cloud copy before editing either version.
A reset is reversible in the sense that it does not erase cloud files, but it is not a zero-impact action: sync is disconnected temporarily, local folder selections can change, and the client must rebuild its state. Use it after the online check and basic update rather than as the first reaction to a single bad shortcut.
5. Repair a work or school library with the OneDrive for Business app
For a work or school library that shows sync errors, the older OneDrive for Business sync app includes a dedicated Repair workflow. This is different from the personal-client reset above.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open the OneDrive menu and choose View sync problems.
- Select Repair when the option appears.
- Allow the process to disconnect and reconnect the affected libraries and download the current server version.
- Review the archive that Repair creates for unsynced local changes. Compare those files with the server copy before deleting or replacing anything.
Do not restart the computer while Repair is running. Because the workflow can archive local changes, check the archive carefully if colleagues have edited the same files or if the computer was offline when you made changes.
6. Recreate a desktop shortcut that alone fails
If the file opens from OneDrive.com and from the OneDrive folder but a desktop shortcut returns 0x80070032, the shortcut itself may be stale or malformed. A Microsoft Q&A report describes deleting and recreating the shortcut as a workaround for the exact error. Another response notes that retaining the complete filename extension avoided the problem. These are anecdotal workarounds, not a guaranteed Microsoft fix.
- Right-click the failing desktop shortcut and select Delete. This removes the shortcut, not the target file.
- Browse to the file in the synchronized OneDrive folder, or locate it on OneDrive.com and use the Windows option to create a shortcut when available.
- Create a new shortcut with the complete original filename, including its extension such as
.docx,.xlsx, or.pdf. - Open the new shortcut. If it fails, open the file directly from the OneDrive folder and continue with the reset or support steps instead of repeatedly recreating shortcuts.
7. Check whether your Windows version is supported
Microsoft’s current issue information says the OneDrive sync app is no longer supported on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. On those systems, the practical choices are to upgrade Windows to a supported release or use OneDrive through the web. Continuing to reset an unsupported client is unlikely to produce a lasting fix.
On a supported Windows version, make sure the OneDrive client itself is current. Enterprise administrators may control update timing, sign-in, or library policies; if you cannot update or authenticate, contact the organization’s administrator after documenting the exact error and affected library.

When the error affects only one file
A single-file failure does not establish that the whole OneDrive connection is broken. Compare the item with another file in the same folder and with a file in a different folder.
- If other files download, confirm the affected item is not open in another application and wait for any pending processing.
- If the file was recently renamed or moved, navigate to its current location rather than relying on an old shortcut.
- If the item is shared, confirm that your account still has access online.
- If only a particular file type fails, test it in the browser and then in the application associated with that type; the result can distinguish a file-association issue from OneDrive transport.
When many files or an entire library fail
Widespread failures point more strongly to the client connection, account sign-in, or an unsupported platform. Complete the update, restart, online verification, Files On-Demand check, and reset sequence before experimenting with unrelated Windows repairs.
Do not promise yourself that System File Checker, DISM, registry edits, deleting the OneDrive directory, or buying external storage will repair this specific code. Those actions address other classes of problems and can introduce new changes without addressing the provider request that generated 0x80070032.

Escalate after the documented steps
Contact Microsoft support or your organization’s OneDrive administrator when all of the following are true:
- The file and account work on OneDrive.com.
- Windows and OneDrive are updated and the computer has been restarted.
- You confirmed sign-in and Files On-Demand status.
- You attempted the reset, or used Repair for an affected work or school library.
- The error persists across files or returns immediately after a recreated shortcut.
Record whether the failure affects a personal account or a work/school library, whether the item is cloud-only or already local, the Windows version, and the exact wording “Error 0x80070032: The request is not supported.” That information helps support distinguish a shortcut problem from a broader sync-provider failure.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
The Bottom Line
Start by updating Windows and OneDrive, restarting, and confirming the file opens on OneDrive.com. Then check sign-in and Files On-Demand, reset OneDrive if the local client remains broken, use Repair for a work or school library, and recreate a shortcut when only that shortcut fails. Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 require an upgrade or web access because the sync app is no longer supported there.
