Update Windows and OneDrive, then reset the client with %localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveOneDrive.exe /reset. If OneDrive does not reopen, start it from the Start menu, sign in again if asked, and allow synchronization to rebuild. Resetting or reinstalling OneDrive does not delete your cloud data, although it does reset local settings and requires setup again. If reset fails, uninstall OneDrive from Windows Apps settings and install the current Microsoft version.
What OneDrive error 0x80070032 means
OneDrive error 0x80070032 is a failure reported by the Windows synchronization client. Microsoft’s reviewed error-code material does not provide a dedicated explanation for this exact hexadecimal value, so there is no single confirmed cause to apply to every computer. The practical response is to work through the supported checks for account access, service availability, connectivity, updates, reset, and reinstall.

The code can appear with wording such as “OneDrive failed,” but the message alone does not identify whether the problem is the account, the local client configuration, a connection, a pending update, or a condition specific to your Windows edition, OneDrive build, account type, or local policy. Treat it as a synchronization-client problem rather than proof that your files are damaged.

Microsoft states: “You won’t lose any data by resetting or uninstalling OneDrive.” Resetting or uninstalling changes the Windows client and its local configuration; it does not delete the data stored in your OneDrive account. You may nevertheless have to sign in again, choose synchronization settings again, and wait while OneDrive performs a full synchronization.

Do not use the reset or reinstall as a reason to move or delete local originals immediately. After setup, verify that OneDrive is connected and that a test file appears on OneDrive.com before changing the originals. This gives you an independent confirmation that the rebuilt client is communicating with the account.
Checks to complete before resetting
Confirm that the account works online
Open OneDrive.com in a browser and sign in with the same Microsoft account used by the Windows client. If you cannot sign in on the web, resolve the account issue first; resetting a local client cannot repair a failed account login. If web access works, leave the browser session available so you can verify a test upload later.
Check for a service interruption
A local reset cannot correct a Microsoft service outage. Check Microsoft’s current service-status information and retry when the service is available. If OneDrive.com loads normally but the desktop client still fails, continue with the local steps below.

Install available updates
Install pending Windows updates and update OneDrive before changing its configuration. Microsoft includes account, connectivity, update, reset, and reinstall checks in its troubleshooting guidance. An older client can fail even when the account and files are healthy, so perform the update check rather than assuming that the hexadecimal code identifies a permanent fault.
Reset OneDrive with Microsoft’s command
Reset is the least disruptive repair because it keeps the installed client but clears its local OneDrive settings and starts synchronization over. Use the command exactly as shown; the %localappdata% variable points Windows to your user profile’s local application-data directory.
- Save work in other applications and close any OneDrive setup or error dialogs.
- Press Win+R to open the Windows Run dialog.
- Paste
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveOneDrive.exe /resetinto the Open box. Keep the space before/reset. - Press Enter. Windows runs OneDrive’s documented reset operation.
- Wait for OneDrive to restart. The client may disappear briefly while its local settings are rebuilt.
- If OneDrive does not reopen on its own, open the Start menu, search for OneDrive, and launch the app manually.
- Sign in again if Windows requests your Microsoft account credentials.
- Allow OneDrive to rebuild synchronization. A full sync after reset is expected, so avoid interrupting the client while it is reconstructing its local state.
The reset command is a Microsoft-documented operation. It does not promise a fix for every instance of 0x80070032, but it is the appropriate first repair after updates and the account and service checks.

Verify that synchronization rebuilt correctly
Check the account and folder choices
After OneDrive opens, confirm that the signed-in account is the one you checked on OneDrive.com. Review the selected folders when the setup process presents them. A reset can require this configuration again, and an incorrect account can make a healthy client appear empty or incomplete.

- Create a small test file in the OneDrive folder shown by the newly configured client.
- Wait for OneDrive to complete the operation rather than immediately moving or deleting the file.
- Open OneDrive.com and confirm that the test file is visible in the expected location.
- Only after that confirmation should you reorganize or remove local originals.
This test distinguishes a successful client rebuild from a client that merely launches. If the test file never appears online, the synchronization problem remains and you should continue with the escalation steps.
Allow the full synchronization to finish
Resetting triggers a full synchronization. During that process, the local folder may not immediately reflect the final account state. Keep the computer connected and let the client finish before judging the reset unsuccessful. The amount of time depends on the data that must be synchronized, so no universal completion time applies.

If OneDrive does not reopen after reset
Launching OneDrive from Start is the first response when the reset command finishes but no client window or tray activity returns. If it opens, complete sign-in and folder selection, then perform the test-file check. If it will not launch, closes again, or continues to show 0x80070032 after the rebuilt sync has been given time to run, move to a reinstall.
Do not repeatedly run the reset command while the client is already rebuilding synchronization. Repeated resets can leave you unsure which configuration is active and can force another full sync. Use one reset attempt, verify the result, and then escalate if the failure persists.

Uninstall and reinstall OneDrive when reset fails
Reinstall is the supported escalation when reset does not restore the client. It replaces the installed OneDrive program, while reset keeps that installation and clears its local settings. Microsoft says uninstalling does not delete your cloud data, but the local sign-in and synchronization configuration must be completed again.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Open Windows Settings and go to the Apps area. The exact label can vary by Windows version; use the installed-apps list.
- Find OneDrive, choose its uninstall option, and confirm the removal.
- When uninstalling finishes, download the current OneDrive installer from Microsoft’s official source. Use the installer intended for your Windows version and account environment.
- Run the installer and complete setup.
- Launch OneDrive, sign in with the account you verified earlier, and review the synchronization choices.
- Allow the newly installed client to perform its initial full synchronization.
- Create a test file and verify it on OneDrive.com before moving or deleting any originals.
Reinstalling does not guarantee that every 0x80070032 case will disappear. If the same failure returns, record whether it happens before sign-in, during folder selection, or while the full sync is running. That timing helps separate an account or service condition from a local client problem, but Microsoft’s reviewed material does not assign a confirmed root cause to this code.

Common situations and the correct next step
OneDrive.com will not accept your sign-in
Stay with account recovery or account verification rather than resetting repeatedly. The desktop command changes local settings; it cannot correct credentials or an account that cannot be accessed online.
OneDrive.com works, but the desktop app is outdated
Install available Windows and OneDrive updates, then run one reset attempt. Updating first can avoid rebuilding a client that is immediately replaced by a newer version.

The reset command runs but nothing appears
Open OneDrive from Start. If the app launches, sign in and wait for the full synchronization. If it does not launch or fails again, uninstall and reinstall from Microsoft’s current installer.
The app launches but the test file never reaches the website
Confirm the account and selected folders, then allow the full synchronization to finish. Check the service status and connectivity again. If the online test still fails, proceed to reinstall rather than deleting local files.
The same code returns after reinstall
At that point, the error is not resolved by replacing the local installation. Verify that the account works online and that there is no service interruption, then note the Windows version, OneDrive build, account type, and local policy context when seeking Microsoft support. Those variables can change the behavior even though the hexadecimal code is identical.
Quick Recap
How to avoid accidental data loss during recovery
- Do not delete the OneDrive folder to force a repair; use the documented reset or Windows uninstall process.
- Do not move large groups of files while the full synchronization is still rebuilding.
- Keep the account session and the local client on the same Microsoft account.
- Use a small test file and verify it on OneDrive.com before changing originals.
- Remember that “no data loss” refers to Microsoft’s statement about resetting or uninstalling OneDrive; it does not remove the need to check which local folders are selected after setup.
