If OneDrive setup reports 0x80070032 or “The request is not supported,” first determine which OneDrive app you are installing and whether the message appears during setup at all. Windows maps 0x80070032 to ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED, but Microsoft’s OneDrive support material does not document it as a dedicated OneDrive installer diagnosis. The reliable first path is to remove the existing desktop client, install the current desktop version from Microsoft, and sign in again. If the code appears while opening an online-only file instead, use the separate file-access troubleshooting path below.
What error 0x80070032 means
At the Windows level, hexadecimal status 0x80070032 means ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED: the operation requested by a component is not supported in the state or channel where it was attempted. That label does not identify the failing component by itself. In the retrieved Microsoft OneDrive guidance, the code is not listed as a OneDrive-specific installer diagnosis, so treating every appearance as the same problem can send you down the wrong path.

Read the exact symptom before changing anything:
- Setup failure: the message appears when you launch a OneDrive installer, remove an old client, or reinstall after a failed update.
- File-access failure: the message appears when you open, copy, or otherwise use an online-only file in an existing OneDrive folder.
- Version conflict: Windows says that a newer OneDrive version is already installed, sometimes alongside another setup message.
The steps in the next section address a desktop installation or reinstallation. Do not uninstall anything until you have confirmed that this is the symptom you are experiencing.
Choose the correct OneDrive app and installation channel
Microsoft distributes two different OneDrive experiences on Windows. They are not interchangeable:

| What you have | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| OneDrive desktop sync app | Creates the OneDrive folder, synchronizes files, and supports desktop backup and synchronization. | You need files to sync between Windows and OneDrive, or you need backup and sync features. |
| OneDrive app from the Microsoft Store | Lets you view OneDrive content. | You only need a Store application for viewing; it does not provide the desktop backup and synchronization client. |
If your goal is backup or synchronization, use the desktop app downloaded from Microsoft rather than assuming the Store listing is the same product. A Store installation can therefore be the wrong channel even when it appears to have the OneDrive name.
Prepare before removing OneDrive
A reinstall changes the local sync component, not the cloud account. Before you begin, make a note of the account and folders involved so that you can reproduce the same setup afterward.
- Confirm whether the account is personal or belongs to work or school. Work and school folders may need to be configured again after installation.
- Close OneDrive and any setup window that is currently running. Do not interrupt a file operation you know is still in progress.
- Record the wording of the error and whether it appears before you can sign in, during installation, or after sign-in.
- Check whether you are trying to install the desktop sync app or the Store viewing app. The distinction determines the correct download and the expected features.
Uninstalling the desktop client does not delete files or data stored in OneDrive. The local OneDrive folder stops syncing while the client is absent; your cloud files remain available when you sign in at OneDrive.com. If a local file is already present on the computer, uninstalling the application does not turn it into a cloud deletion. The practical consequence is that synchronization pauses until you reinstall and sign in.

Cleanly reinstall the OneDrive desktop client
Use this sequence for a setup failure or a failed reinstall. The order matters because running a new installer over a damaged or newer existing installation can reproduce the same message.
1. Remove the existing desktop client
- Open Settings from the Windows Start menu.
- Choose Apps, then Installed apps. On older Windows editions the page is labeled Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft OneDrive in the list.
- Select the entry, choose Uninstall, and confirm the prompts.
If the entry is not visible, verify that you are looking for the desktop client rather than a Store application. Do not infer that the absence of one listing proves that no OneDrive component is installed; record what Windows actually shows for the escalation information later.
2. Obtain the current desktop installer
Download the OneDrive desktop application from Microsoft’s official OneDrive download path. Avoid substituting the Store app when you require desktop backup and synchronization. Open the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. Microsoft’s reinstall guidance describes this as the supported route after removing the existing client.

3. Complete setup and sign in
- Allow the installer to finish copying and registering the application.
- When OneDrive opens, sign in with the account that owns the files you want to synchronize.
- Choose the OneDrive folder location and the folders you want available on this computer when the setup screens ask for those choices.
- Let the initial synchronization run. A full sync occurs after reinstallation, so the amount of time depends on the account’s content and the folders selected.
Previously selected folders may not be selected automatically after a reinstall. Review the folder-selection screen rather than assuming the old choices were preserved. For a work or school account, check that the organization’s folders appear and that you have signed in with the intended organizational identity.
4. Confirm that synchronization has resumed
After setup, open the OneDrive controls from the Windows notification area and verify that the account is signed in. Check the OneDrive folder for the files you expect and allow the first synchronization to complete before judging the reinstall. A successful installation can still look incomplete while the full sync is in progress.
Fix the “newer version is already installed” branch
A version-conflict message means Windows believes a newer OneDrive package is already present. Installing another copy without removing that existing client is unlikely to resolve the conflict.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features) to locate Microsoft OneDrive.
- Choose Uninstall and let Windows complete the removal.
- Return to Microsoft’s official OneDrive download path and download the latest desktop installer offered there.
- Run that installer, sign in, and review the folder selections again.
If the same “newer version” wording returns immediately, capture the exact text instead of repeatedly launching the installer. The wording, the installed-app entry, and the installer channel help distinguish a leftover package from a different setup failure.
When 0x80070032 appears while opening or copying a file
If OneDrive is already installed and the code appears only when you open or copy an online-only file, you are dealing with a different scenario from an installation failure. Online-only content is represented in the local OneDrive folder but is retrieved when needed; a setup reinstall is not automatically the right remedy.
A Microsoft Q&A case reports that deleting and recreating the affected shortcut resolved that user’s symptom. That is community guidance for a particular case, not a universal fix. Use it only when the failure is tied to one shortcut or one online-only item and you can identify the original location safely.

Case-specific shortcut check
- Identify whether the error follows one shortcut or affects multiple files.
- If it is limited to a shortcut, remove that shortcut from the OneDrive folder without deleting the underlying cloud file.
- Create a new shortcut to the original item and test opening or copying it again.
Do not use this branch to replace a failed installer diagnosis. If the code appears before OneDrive can complete setup, return to the clean-reinstall procedure instead.

The Microsoft Store OneDrive app and the desktop sync client can coexist conceptually but serve different purposes. The Store app is for viewing OneDrive content; it does not perform desktop backup and synchronization. Therefore:
- If you installed the Store app expecting a synchronized OneDrive folder, remove that assumption and install the desktop client from Microsoft.
- If you only need to view files and the Store app itself fails, describe that Store-specific symptom when seeking support; it is not evidence that the desktop installer is broken.
- If the desktop client is listed under Installed apps and the installer reports a newer version, follow the version-conflict branch rather than installing the Store app as a workaround.
What to do when reinstalling does not work
Microsoft’s retrieved support pages do not establish a OneDrive-specific root cause for this exact installer-and-code combination. Once the supported uninstall and reinstall sequence fails, the most useful next step is an evidence-based support request rather than repeated blind attempts.
Capture the following details:
- The complete error text, including whether it says “The request is not supported” or reports a newer version.
- Which channel you used: Microsoft’s desktop download or the Microsoft Store.
- Your Windows edition and version/build.
- Whether Microsoft OneDrive appeared under Settings > Apps > Installed apps before removal.
- Whether the failure occurred before sign-in, during installation, immediately after sign-in, or only while opening or copying an online-only file.
- Whether the account is personal or work/school, and which folders were selected for synchronization.
These details separate a desktop setup problem from a Store-app mismatch, a leftover-version conflict, and a Files On-Demand or shortcut symptom. They also prevent a support technician from repeating a reinstall when the code is actually being raised during file access.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
| Observed situation | Best next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears while installing or reinstalling the desktop client | Uninstall Microsoft OneDrive from Settings, download the current desktop installer from Microsoft, then sign in again. | This is the supported clean-install sequence. |
| Windows says a newer version is already installed | Remove the existing Microsoft OneDrive entry first, then run the latest desktop installer. | The conflict must be cleared before another installation. |
| You installed the Store app but expected backup or synchronization | Use Microsoft’s desktop sync installer. | The Store app provides viewing, not desktop backup and synchronization. |
| Error occurs only on one online-only file or shortcut | Treat it as a file-access symptom; consider recreating the shortcut only as case-specific guidance. | It is not established as an installer failure. |
| Clean uninstall and reinstall still fail | Escalate with the channel, Windows build, exact wording, timing, and account type. | No OneDrive-specific root cause for this exact combination is established in the cited Microsoft material. |
