Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf Windows says a .dll file is missing, do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. Record the exact file name and the application or Windows component named in the message, then repair the affected program or Windows itself using the path below. Repairing the correct source is safer than copying a DLL from another computer or Windows build.
What a DLL error means
A DLL (dynamic-link library) is a shared code library that Windows and applications load when they need a particular function. A program can stop before it opens when a dependent DLL was upgraded, repaired, overwritten with an earlier version, or removed. Microsoft describes this as a dependency conflict: the application is looking for a library that is missing, damaged, incompatible, or no longer in the location expected by the program.

The wording matters. “The code execution cannot proceed because example.dll was not found” identifies the library Windows could not load, but it does not by itself prove that the DLL should be downloaded separately. The file may belong to the application that displayed the error, or it may be a protected Windows component. Those cases require different repairs.
Choose the repair path before changing files
| What you see | First repair | Scope | Reversibility and data risk | Authentic source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One game or application fails; Windows and other programs work | Repair or reinstall that application | Usually limited to one installation and its dependencies | Repair is generally reversible; reinstalling may reset application settings, so back up saves and configuration first | The application’s official vendor or launcher |
| Several applications fail, Windows components show errors, or system files appear damaged | Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt | Windows image and protected system files | Built-in servicing tools are less disruptive than a clean installation, but back up important files before escalation | Microsoft Update or a repair source matching the installed Windows version |
| SFC cannot repair files or DISM cannot restore the image | Review the CBS log and follow Microsoft’s repair-source or manual-repair guidance | The specific component identified in the logs | Further repair can affect system stability; create a backup before proceeding | A matching Windows installation or recovery source |
| The Windows image remains damaged after supported repairs | Use matching installation or recovery media, with clean installation as the final escalation | Whole Windows installation | Highest data and application risk; back up personal files first | Microsoft’s official software-download and installation media instructions |
Step 1: capture the exact error
- Copy the complete message, including the DLL name and extension. Names such as
msvcp, vcruntime, or a game-specific library are clues about which installation owns the file, but do not assume ownership from the name alone. - Note the program, game launcher, or Windows component that displays the message. A DLL error that appears only when one game starts usually has a different fix from an error that appears during sign-in or when many programs launch.
- Record when the problem began and what changed immediately beforehand: an application update, a Windows update, a repair attempt, or removal of software. A dependency can be overwritten or removed during those changes.
- Do not rename, delete, or replace the named file yet. Do not copy a DLL from another PC, an old backup made for a different Windows build, or an unverified DLL repository. A file with the same name can be the wrong version and create another dependency conflict.
Step 2: repair Windows when the problem is system-wide
Use this route when multiple applications fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or the missing library is clearly part of Windows. Microsoft describes DISM as a command-line tool for servicing and repairing Windows images. It can obtain repair files from Microsoft Update; if that service is unavailable, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows version.

Run DISM from an administrator Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly, then press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Leave the window open while DISM checks and repairs the online Windows image. The command can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close it simply because progress is slow.
- Read the final status. A successful completion means DISM finished its image-repair operation; it does not mean every application-specific DLL has been reinstalled.
Run System File Checker after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow - Wait for the scan to reach 100 percent. SFC checks protected Windows files and attempts to restore missing or damaged copies after the component store has been serviced.
- Restart Windows, then reproduce the original error. Test the same program or Windows action that failed instead of assuming that a completed scan repaired an unrelated application.
Run DISM first and SFC second. SFC is not a promise that every DLL error will be repaired: a program-specific library, a mismatched third-party dependency, or a damaged installation outside Windows may remain unresolved.
If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM may need Microsoft Update or a repair source. If Microsoft Update is unavailable, provide installation or recovery media from the same Windows version and use Microsoft’s documented repair-source syntax and instructions. Version matching matters: media from a different Windows release or build can leave the image in an inconsistent state. Do not substitute a DLL from that media by hand unless Microsoft’s instructions identify the exact component and replacement procedure.

Step 3: repair or reinstall one affected application
If only one game or application fails and Windows otherwise behaves normally, the application’s installer is the safest source for its DLLs. Program-specific libraries are commonly installed together with the application, so repairing or reinstalling the complete package restores the intended version and its related dependencies.

Protect saves and settings first
- Back up personal files and game saves before removing the application. Use the game’s documented save location or cloud-save export if available.
- Keep any license, account, or launcher details needed to reinstall.
- If the application has a built-in Repair or Verify files command, use it before uninstalling. A repair can replace damaged files without removing all settings, although the exact behavior depends on the vendor.
Reinstall from an official source
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Use Windows’ installed-app controls or the vendor’s uninstaller to remove the affected program if a repair option did not work.
- Restart Windows. This clears processes that may still have a library loaded and gives the installer a clean session.
- Download or launch the installer from the application’s official vendor, official game launcher, or another source the vendor identifies as reliable. Avoid DLL-download sites and repackaged installers.
- Install the application again, then start it from its normal shortcut or launcher. If the error names a different DLL, record that new message rather than adding files manually; it may reveal a second missing dependency or a failed installation.
Reinstalling the application does not repair a damaged Windows component. Conversely, running DISM and SFC does not necessarily restore a DLL that belongs only to a game or other third-party program. Match the repair scope to the symptom.

Step 4: restart and retest methodically
Restart after DISM/SFC or an application reinstall. Then perform the same action that produced the error: open the same executable, load the same game, or trigger the same Windows component. If it works, avoid “cleaner” utilities or manual DLL swaps that could overwrite the repaired files. If it still fails, capture the new complete message and check whether the named DLL changed.
When SFC reports that it could not repair files
SFC can finish while reporting that some files could not be repaired. Do not respond by downloading individual DLLs. Inspect the CBS log to identify which component was affected, then follow Microsoft’s manual-repair guidance for that component. The log can distinguish a protected Windows file from an application-owned file and can point to a repair-source problem.

If the log points to a Windows component and DISM still cannot restore it, retry with a matching repair source or installation media. If it points to a third-party application, return to that application’s official repair or reinstall process. Keep a backup before any manual replacement, because replacing the wrong file can make Windows or the application less stable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEscalate only after supported repairs fail
Use recovery or installation media
When the Windows image remains damaged, Microsoft’s recovery or installation media can provide a matching repair source. A USB flash drive is useful for storing installation media and for keeping a backup copy of personal files, but the drive alone is not the repair: you still need Microsoft’s official software-download or media-creation instructions and media that matches the installed Windows version.

Prepare for a clean installation
- Back up documents, photos, saves, project files, browser data, and any other personal files to separate storage. Verify that the backup opens before proceeding.
- Collect application installers, account credentials, license information, and hardware drivers you will need after Windows is installed.
- Use Microsoft’s official software-download instructions to create or obtain installation media appropriate for the computer.
- Read the installation choices carefully. A clean installation can remove applications and, depending on the option selected, personal data and existing partitions.
- After Windows is installed, apply Windows updates, install the needed hardware drivers from official sources, and reinstall applications from their vendors. Restore personal files only after confirming the new installation is stable.
A clean installation is an escalation, not the first response to a single missing DLL. It has the greatest data and setup cost, so use it only after the error remains tied to a damaged Windows image and supported repair-source options have been exhausted.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that make DLL problems worse
- Downloading a random DLL: The file may be malicious, the wrong architecture, or the wrong build. It can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged application installation.
- Copying from another PC: Identical filenames do not guarantee identical versions, servicing levels, or dependencies. A DLL from another Windows build can create a new conflict.
- Running SFC without DISM when the image is damaged: Microsoft documents the sequence as DISM first, then SFC, because SFC relies on the component store for replacement files.
- Using a system-wide repair for an application-only failure: DISM and SFC are Windows repair tools; they are not a substitute for reinstalling a game’s own files.
- Skipping backups: Recovery media and clean installation can remove applications or personal data. Back up before escalation, not after a failed repair.
- Assuming one repaired DLL proves the system is healthy: Restart and retest the original action. A second missing dependency or a damaged launcher can still prevent the program from starting.
Quick decision checklist
- Have you written down the complete DLL name and the program or Windows component named in the error?
- Does only one application fail, or do several applications and Windows components fail?
- Have you avoided unverified DLL-download sites and files copied from another Windows build?
- For a system-wide problem, did you run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthin an administrator Command Prompt beforesfc /scannow? - For an application-only problem, did you use the vendor’s repair, verification, or reinstall process?
- Did you restart and reproduce the original error after the repair?
- If SFC could not repair files, did you inspect the CBS log and use a matching repair source instead of replacing files indiscriminately?
- Before recovery media or a clean installation, did you back up personal files and confirm the backup?
