How to Fix Outlook Error 0x8007 (Find the Missing Digits First)

“0x8007” is not a complete Outlook error code. The final four or more hexadecimal digits determine the actual failure, so copy the entire code and message before changing settings. Note whether it appears when Outlook starts, during send/receive, while adding a profile, or during a Windows update. Then work through Microsoft’s least-destructive sequence: verify connectivity, install updates, test Safe Mode, repair Office, repair or recreate the profile, repair the PST/OST data file, and check whether a Microsoft 365 service incident affects multiple users.

What Outlook error 0x8007 actually means

The characters 0x8007 are only a hexadecimal prefix. Windows and Microsoft applications use many longer codes beginning with that prefix, and the ending identifies the condition. A message such as 0x80072EE2, for example, does not mean the same thing as another code that merely starts with 0x8007. There is no single Outlook repair procedure that can be selected safely from the prefix alone.

Before troubleshooting, copy the complete code exactly as displayed, including every digit after 0x8007. Also record the full wording of the message. A screenshot is useful if the dialog disappears. Write down which Outlook edition you use (new Outlook or classic Outlook), your Windows version, the account type (Microsoft 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, IMAP, POP, or another provider), and the point at which the error appears.

  • Startup: Outlook will not open, closes immediately, or shows the code before the mailbox appears.
  • Send/receive: Outlook opens, but messages remain in the Outbox or mail does not download.
  • Profile setup: the code appears while adding an account or creating a profile.
  • Windows or Office update: the code is shown by Windows Update or an Office installer rather than by Outlook itself.

Those details separate an add-in problem from a damaged profile, a local data-file problem, an account-authentication issue, or a service outage. If the dialog gives only “0x8007,” treat that as an identification problem first, not as proof that Outlook or Windows is damaged.

Use the safest repair order

Do the checks below in order. The early steps do not alter mail data. Profile recreation and data-file repair come later because they can require re-entering account settings or waiting for a mailbox to synchronize.

Stage What it tests or changes When it is most useful
Connection and account checks Internet access, offline status, password and app-password requirements Send/receive failures and account setup errors
Windows and Office updates Installs current fixes for the operating system and Outlook Startup, connection and compatibility problems
Safe Mode Starts classic Outlook without add-ins Crashes, freezes or startup failures that may be extension-related
Office repair Repairs the Microsoft 365 or Office installation Damaged program files, freezes and launch failures
Profile repair or recreation Rebuilds account and Outlook settings Profile-specific startup or authentication failures
Inbox Repair Tool Checks and repairs a PST or OST data file Local mailbox-file corruption
Service and support checks Distinguishes a tenant outage from a local installation problem Several users fail at the same time or local steps do not help

1. Confirm the symptom, connection and credentials

Check Outlook’s connection state

If Outlook opens, look at its status area for an Offline, Disconnected or Trying to connect message. Confirm that a browser can reach other sites and that the computer is not in airplane mode. Temporarily switching to another trusted network can show whether the failure is local to the current connection. Do not infer that an internet connection is healthy merely because a browser opens; Outlook may still be offline or blocked from reaching the account service.

In classic Outlook, use the Send/Receive controls to try a manual operation after the connection is restored. If the exact code appears only during send/receive, preserve the complete message before retrying repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck the password and sign-in method

A password changed recently at the mail provider can leave Outlook using old credentials. Sign in through the provider’s normal webmail page to confirm the account and password, then update the saved credentials when Outlook prompts. Some providers require an app password for desktop mail applications, especially when additional sign-in security is enabled. Follow that provider’s instructions rather than substituting your normal web password.

Separate one-account failures from broad failures

If other accounts in the same Outlook installation work, the affected account or its profile deserves priority. If every account fails on one computer, continue with Office and profile checks. If several people using the same Microsoft 365 organization fail simultaneously, skip repeated local repairs and have an administrator check service health; a tenant-wide incident will not be fixed by rebuilding one workstation.

2. Install Windows and Office updates

Microsoft recommends keeping both Windows and Microsoft 365 or Office current for the best Outlook operation. Install pending updates, restart the computer when requested, and test the same action that produced the full code.

  1. Open Settings and choose Windows Update (the exact location can vary by Windows edition).
  2. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if Windows asks.
  3. Open an Office application such as Word. Use its account or update controls to check for Microsoft 365 or Office updates, install them, and restart Outlook.
  4. Repeat the original action: launch Outlook, send a test message, receive mail, or add the account. Record whether the complete code changed.

Do not interrupt an update partway through. If Windows Update itself displays the code, treat that as a Windows update issue and keep the exact Windows message separate from any Outlook message; the same prefix does not prove that both failures have the same cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test classic Outlook in Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a diagnostic test, not a permanent operating mode. Close Outlook, then open the Windows Run dialog and enter:

outlook.exe /safe

On older Windows installations, Outlook /safe may also be accepted. If Outlook opens and the failure disappears, an add-in is a likely cause. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance states: If the problem doesn’t occur after you restart Outlook, an add-in is likely the cause of the problem.

If Safe Mode works

  1. Close the Safe Mode window and start Outlook normally.
  2. Open File > Options > Add-ins.
  3. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins and choose Go. If the failure concerns another add-in type, use that type in the same control.
  4. Clear one add-in at a time, restart Outlook, and repeat the action that failed.
  5. When the error returns, the last enabled add-in is a strong suspect. Leave it disabled, update it from its publisher, or contact that publisher for a compatible version.

Changing one add-in at a time matters: disabling several at once tells you only that one of them is involved, not which one. If Safe Mode also fails, re-enable any add-ins you disabled and continue to Office repair; Safe Mode has then ruled out less, but it has not damaged the profile.

New Outlook versus classic Outlook

The outlook.exe /safe switch applies to classic Outlook for Windows. New Outlook has a different application architecture and may not expose the same add-in and profile controls. Identify the edition before following classic-Outlook instructions. If the title bar or account menu identifies new Outlook, use its in-app account and support controls, and preserve the complete code for escalation rather than assuming a classic profile or PST repair applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Repair the Microsoft 365 or Office installation

Use Office repair when Outlook freezes, fails during startup, or cannot connect after connection and Safe Mode checks. Save work in other Office applications first. Repair changes program files, not the content stored in your mailbox, but you may be asked to close Office applications.

  1. Open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (or open Programs and Features in Control Panel on older Windows).
  2. Find Microsoft 365 or your installed Microsoft Office edition.
  3. Open its menu and choose Modify or Change, then select the available repair option.
  4. Follow the wizard, restart Windows if requested, and test Outlook with the same account and action.

Windows may offer more than one repair mode. Read the wizard’s description before choosing; an option that downloads or reinstalls files can take longer than a local repair and may require an internet connection. If repair completes but the exact code remains, do not run it repeatedly—move to profile diagnostics.

5. Repair or recreate the Outlook profile

An Outlook profile contains account and application settings. It is different from the PST or OST data file that holds local mailbox data. Rebuilding a profile can correct a profile-specific startup or authentication failure, but it does not repair a corrupt data file.

Try Outlook’s profile repair option

In classic Outlook, open the account settings area from File > Account Settings and look for the profile or account repair command available for your configuration. Follow the prompts, authenticate when requested, and restart Outlook. Microsoft notes that the Repair option is unavailable for some Outlook 2016 Exchange configurations, so its absence does not mean you have missed a hidden setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a new profile when repair is unavailable or ineffective

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Open Windows Control Panel and search for Mail or Mail (Microsoft Outlook).
  3. Choose Show Profiles, then Add.
  4. Give the profile a descriptive name and add the account again using the provider’s current sign-in method.
  5. Set the new profile to be used when Outlook starts, or select it from the prompt, and test startup and send/receive.

Keep the old profile until the new one has been tested. A new profile may need time to synchronize an Exchange or Microsoft 365 mailbox, and locally cached content can be unavailable until synchronization completes. Do not delete an old profile as a first step, particularly when you have local-only information or are unsure where a PST is stored.

6. Check and repair the PST or OST data file

When Outlook reports data-file errors, repeatedly crashes while loading a folder, or behaves differently with one local mailbox file, use Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool. Microsoft’s support direction is to Run the Inbox Repair Tool for Outlook data-file problems.

  1. Exit Outlook completely. Check Task Manager if necessary to ensure no Outlook process is still running.
  2. Make a backup copy of the relevant PST or OST file before repair when possible. Keep the backup unchanged so it can be returned to if needed.
  3. Locate and run SCANPST.EXE from your Office installation.
  4. Use the tool’s browse control to select the affected PST or OST file, then start the scan.
  5. Allow the tool to create its backup when offered, review the scan result, and choose repair only after confirming that the selected file is the intended one.
  6. Open Outlook and allow the mailbox to synchronize. Test the original action and record the complete result.

An OST is a local cache for an Exchange or Microsoft 365 mailbox, whereas a PST can contain locally stored mail and other Outlook data. Repairing the wrong file will not resolve the problem and can complicate diagnosis. If you cannot identify the file, stop before running the tool and preserve the code and account details for support.

7. Decide whether the problem is local or a Microsoft 365 service issue

Scope changes the correct next step. A failure limited to one computer, one profile or one account points toward local troubleshooting. A simultaneous failure affecting multiple users in the same Microsoft 365 organization suggests a service issue. An administrator should check Microsoft 365 service health and any provider status information available to the organization before rebuilding every user’s profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Pattern More likely direction Practical response
Only one user and one profile fail Profile, add-in or local data file Safe Mode, Office repair, then profile and data-file checks
All accounts fail on one computer Office installation, Windows or local connectivity Updates, connection checks and Office repair
Many users fail at the same time Microsoft 365 tenant or service scope Administrator checks service health before local rebuilds
Only send/receive fails after a password change Credentials or provider authentication Confirm the password and app-password requirement

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Microsoft Support

Escalate after the documented sequence when the complete code persists, the repair tool cannot read the file, or the issue involves an account you cannot reconfigure safely. Provide evidence that lets support distinguish the cases:

  • The complete hexadecimal code and exact message text.
  • Whether the failure occurs at startup, send/receive, profile setup or Windows update.
  • Your Outlook edition (new or classic), Office or Microsoft 365 version, and Windows version.
  • The account type and whether an app password or recent password change is involved.
  • Whether outlook.exe /safe changes the behavior.
  • Which update, Office repair, profile action or SCANPST.EXE step was completed, and what happened afterward.
  • Whether other users or accounts are affected.

Do not report only “0x8007.” Support cannot reliably map an incomplete prefix to one diagnosis, and an incorrect diagnosis can lead to unnecessary profile deletion or data-file changes.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for and attempt to repair common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and diagnostic features. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every Outlook failure. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription.

Final decision guide

  • If you have only 0x8007, retrieve the missing digits and message before choosing a fix.
  • If Outlook works in Safe Mode, isolate add-ins one at a time.
  • If Safe Mode does not help, update Windows and Office, then repair the Office installation.
  • If the problem follows one account or profile, repair or recreate that profile while keeping the old one until testing is complete.
  • If a specific PST or OST is implicated, back it up and run SCANPST.EXE.
  • If multiple Microsoft 365 users fail together, check service health instead of repeating local repairs.

The complete code, the symptom’s timing and the scope of affected users are the three facts that turn an ambiguous 0x8007 message into a supportable Outlook diagnosis.
