The code 0X007007E is often a transcription of Outlook’s documented HRESULT 0x8007007e. Do not apply a registry fix until you copy the complete code and message. In Microsoft’s documented case, Outlook search fails because the Mapi16 protocol handler cannot load, and Event Viewer records Event ID 3083.
The correct repair depends on what Outlook is doing when the error appears: searching, starting, sending and receiving, or working through Google Workspace Sync for Microsoft Outlook (GWSMO). Capture the exact message first, then follow the matching branch below. The safest general progression is update, test Outlook in safe mode, repair Office, repair the data file, and create a fresh profile. Registry changes are reserved for the specific search/indexing symptom.

Confirm the code before changing anything
Microsoft’s Outlook support documentation uses 0x8007007e, not 0x007007E, for the MAPI/Windows Search failure described in this guide. The strings look similar but are not interchangeable proof that you have the same problem. A copied screenshot, Event Viewer entry, or complete Outlook dialog is more reliable than a code typed from memory.

- The complete hexadecimal code, including every zero and the
0xprefix. - The sentence that follows the code. The key documented wording is “The protocol handler Mapi16 cannot be loaded. Error description: The specified module could not be found. (HRESULT : 0x8007007e).”
- Whether the failure affects search, startup, send/receive, or GWSMO.
- Your Outlook edition and build. In classic Outlook, open File > Office Account > About Outlook; the dialog identifies whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the account is POP, IMAP, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365, or connected through GWSMO.
These details determine whether the documented search workaround applies or whether you need a broader Office, data-file, or profile repair.

When Outlook search is empty: the documented 0x8007007e branch
This is the only branch in which Microsoft specifically connects the HRESULT with the Mapi16 protocol handler. It applies to classic Outlook search with POP, IMAP, or Exchange accounts when Windows Search cannot load the handler. Verify the symptom before editing the registry.
1. Check Event Viewer
- Press
Win, type Event Viewer, and open it. - Review the Windows Search-related application logs around the time the search failed.
- Look for Event ID 3083 and the text stating that the Mapi16 protocol handler cannot be loaded and that the specified module could not be found.
If the event is absent and the failure is not an empty-search problem, stop using this branch and continue with the general repairs below.
2. Confirm 32-bit or 64-bit Office
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select File > Office Account > About Outlook.
- Read the bitness shown in the About dialog.
Microsoft’s workaround differs for 32-bit and 64-bit Outlook. Use the instructions that match the bitness shown in your installation; applying the opposite architecture’s instructions can leave the search configuration unchanged or create a new problem.

- Close Outlook and other Office programs.
- Press
Win+R, enterregedit, and approve the User Account Control prompt. - In Registry Editor, select File > Export, choose All for the export range, and save the backup somewhere you can reach if you need to undo the change.
Registry editing is an advanced operation. If your computer is managed by an organization, a Group Policy may overwrite a local registry value; ask the administrator before changing it.

4. Use the Windows Search policy value
Microsoft identifies a policy value named PreventIndexingOutlook. In the documented search failure, setting this value to 1 disables Windows Desktop Search indexing for Outlook so Outlook uses its built-in search. The value belongs under the Windows Search policy key, commonly reached at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindows Search. If the key or value is missing, follow Microsoft’s architecture-specific instructions rather than guessing at a different location or data type.
- With Outlook closed, navigate to the Windows Search policy key.
- Create or edit the
PreventIndexingOutlookDWORD (32-bit) Value. - Set its data to
1only when the Mapi16/Event ID 3083 search symptom has been confirmed. - Close Registry Editor, restart Windows, and test an Outlook search.
This is a workaround, not a repair of the missing module. Windows Desktop Search no longer supplies Outlook results while the policy is active; Outlook’s built-in search handles the query instead.
5. Re-enable normal indexing when appropriate
To turn the policy off, set PreventIndexingOutlook to 0 as Microsoft describes, or remove the policy value if it was created solely for this test. Restart Windows and allow indexing time before judging search results. If the original Mapi16 event returns, restore the backup or have an administrator review the Office installation and architecture-specific fix.
Repair Office before replacing files
Office repair is the least disruptive installation-level repair for a missing or damaged Outlook component. It is also Google’s recommended first response when GWSMO cannot load the Outlook MAPI libraries.

Windows 11 or Windows 10 installed-app repair
- Save your work and close Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and other Office programs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the wording may be Apps & features on some Windows builds).
- Find Microsoft 365 or your installed Office edition, open its menu, and choose Modify or Change.
- Run the available repair option. If a quick repair does not resolve the error, run the more comprehensive online repair when your connection and sign-in allow it.
- Restart Windows and test the same Outlook action that produced the error.
Control Panel route
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office, then choose Change.
- Run the offered repair and restart when prompted.
Repair can reset or replace Office components, so keep account credentials available. It does not automatically prove that a specific Outlook profile or data file is healthy; continue with the relevant branch if the error remains.
Test Outlook in safe mode
Safe mode starts Outlook without its normal add-ins and helps separate an add-in problem from an installation or profile problem.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
outlook.exe /safeand press Enter. - Choose the profile if Outlook asks, then repeat the action that failed.
If Outlook works in safe mode, an add-in or profile issue becomes more likely. In normal Outlook, open File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, choose Go, clear selected add-ins, and restart Outlook normally. Re-enable them one at a time until the failing add-in is identified. If safe mode also fails, continue with Office, data-file, and profile repairs rather than repeatedly toggling add-ins.

- Close Outlook completely. Check Task Manager if Outlook still appears to be running.
- Locate and open Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool for your installed Office version. The executable’s folder varies by Office edition and installation type, so use the Microsoft instructions for the matching version rather than downloading a copy from an untrusted site.
- In the tool, browse to the Outlook data file identified by your profile and run the scan.
- Accept the option to create a backup of the scanned file before repair.
- Run the repair, start Outlook, and test the affected folder or operation.
Keep the backup until the account and folders are behaving normally. A data-file repair cannot replace a missing Office MAPI component, so it is not the first choice for a confirmed Mapi16 protocol-handler event.
Create a new Outlook profile
A corrupted profile can prevent startup, disrupt Microsoft 365 or Exchange connections, and interfere with send/receive. Testing a new profile is safer than deleting the old one immediately.
- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel > Mail. If Mail is not visible, switch Control Panel to an icon view and search for it.
- Select Show Profiles, then Add.
- Give the profile a distinct name and add the account again. Complete any sign-in or verification prompts.
- Under When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile, select Prompt for a profile to be used temporarily, or choose the new profile as default.
- Start Outlook with the new profile and test search, startup, or send/receive before removing the old profile.
Do not delete the old profile until you have confirmed that required accounts, calendars, contacts, archives, and locally stored data are available. A new profile can resolve profile corruption, but it will not fix a damaged Office installation that affects every profile.

GWSMO-specific handling
Google documents 0x8007007e for cases in which GWSMO cannot load required Outlook MAPI DLLs. Start with the Office repair procedure above. If repair does not restore the libraries, Google’s guidance supports uninstalling and reinstalling Office. After reinstalling, install and configure the supported GWSMO version again, then test the same account and Outlook action.

Do not copy individual MAPI DLLs from download sites. DLLs must match the Office architecture and installation, and an untrusted replacement can create additional failures. If reinstalling Office is controlled by an organization, have the administrator perform it and retain the exact error text for support.
When the problem is startup, freezing, or crashing
For a general Outlook failure without the documented Mapi16 search event, use a progressive sequence rather than jumping to registry edits.
- Install current Office and Windows updates. Outdated software is a known contributor to Microsoft 365 and Exchange connection problems.
- Test safe mode. Use
outlook.exe /safeto identify add-ins that interfere with startup. - Repair Office. Run the available repair from Windows Settings or Control Panel.
- Repair the data file. Use SCANPST.EXE when the symptoms point to a damaged classic Outlook data file.
- Create a new profile. Test the account in a clean profile before deleting the original.
If Outlook works only in safe mode, leave add-ins disabled while you complete the remaining checks. If it fails in safe mode and in a new profile after Office repair, preserve the error details and escalate rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated components.
When send and receive fails
Check the account and connection first
- Verify that Windows has an active internet connection and that Outlook is not in an offline state.
- Check the account’s synchronization status and any sign-in prompt.
- Review whether a password was changed recently; Outlook may need the updated credentials.
- Look for a large attachment or message held in the Outbox that prevents the queue from progressing.
Then use the repair sequence
After the basic checks, test safe mode, repair Office, run the Inbox Repair Tool where appropriate, and create a new profile. Microsoft identifies outdated software and corrupted profiles as common causes of Microsoft 365 and Exchange connection failures. An account that works in a new profile points to the old profile; an account that fails everywhere points toward installation, service, credentials, or administrator-side causes.
What not to do
- Do not treat
0x007007Eand0x8007007eas identical without confirming the complete message. - Do not edit
PreventIndexingOutlookmerely because Outlook is slow, frozen, or unable to send mail; it is tied to the documented search/indexing symptom. - Do not download replacement DLLs from random websites or copy files from another computer.
- Do not delete an old Outlook profile or data file before testing the replacement and preserving backups.
- Do not assume a repair fixed the problem until you repeat the exact search, startup, or send/receive action that originally failed.
When to escalate
Contact Microsoft support or your organization’s administrator when the complete code and message do not match a documented branch, when policy settings are controlled centrally, or when Outlook still fails after current updates, safe-mode testing, Office repair, data-file checks, and a new profile. Provide the exact code, message, Event Viewer event ID, Office bitness and build, account type, the symptom, and every repair step already attempted. That evidence prevents a support technician from treating a search-only MAPI problem as a generic crash.
