First find out whether “lag” means rising network latency or a local frame-rate hitch: watch Path of Exile’s in-game performance metrics when the problem occurs. If latency rises, troubleshoot the connection and route. If latency stays steady while the game stutters, investigate the client and PC. These symptoms have different causes, so an FPS tweak will not necessarily fix a network problem—and a VPN will not fix a rendering hitch.
Identify what is spiking
Players use “lag” to describe both delayed responses over the network and pauses or uneven frame delivery on their own computer. Enable the in-game performance metrics and observe them during a spike. A rising latency graph points toward the network branch below; steady latency during a hitch points toward client or PC performance. This is diagnostic guidance from a community support reply, not a guarantee that one graph identifies every cause. Path of Exile community support discussion
- Latency rises: test the local connection, then compare routes and seek help from your ISP if needed.
- Latency remains steady but the game hitches: check game files, drivers, operating system, heat, and storage.
If latency spikes, troubleshoot the connection
Try local network checks first
- Restart your router.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with an Ethernet connection. Grinding Gear Games (GGG) cautions that “Wifi is not always suitable for latency sensitive applications such as online gaming.” A wired test is a way to isolate the connection, not a guaranteed cure.
- If you already use Ethernet, try another cable and a different router port.
- Check that Path of Exile is allowed through your outgoing firewall.
GGG says the game client does not listen on incoming ports, so port forwarding is not required. See its General Troubleshooting Guide.
Compare routes before blaming a server
If the basic checks do not help, contact your ISP and collect an MTR trace using GGG’s MTR guide. MTR can help show where route behavior changes, but latency or loss shown at an intermediate hop alone does not prove that hop is disrupting game traffic. Interpret the route and endpoint together using the guide.

You can compare the same symptom on your usual gateway and another available gateway, but treat the comparison as a diagnostic test, not proof that a particular gateway is currently faulty. Gateway conditions change, and forum posts describe individual experiences rather than establish a live service incident. GGG’s guide notes that problems involving public internet connectivity or game servers may require waiting for the responsible party.
Use a VPN only as a route test
GGG describes a VPN as a possible way around a public-internet routing issue identified by MTR. It can put your traffic on a different route and may increase latency; it is not a guaranteed fix, an FPS tool, or an endorsement of a provider. If latency is steady but the game stutters
Verify the game files
GGG’s troubleshooting guide gives different repair steps depending on the PC client:
- Standalone client: run PackCheck.exe.
- Steam: use Steam’s “Verify integrity of game files” option.
- Epic Games: use the launcher’s Verify function.
The guide also describes moving the game cache/configuration folder as a troubleshooting step. Follow the guide’s instructions for that step rather than deleting files at random. General Troubleshooting Guide

Check system requirements, software, and heat
GGG’s guide lists the following minimum PC requirements. These are baseline specifications, not a promise of steady frame rates across every game build, patch, resolution, or graphics setting. GGG General Troubleshooting Guide

- Keep graphics drivers and your operating system current, using guidance for your specific hardware.
- Check for overheating if stutters appear during play.
- Consider installing the client on an SSD if local stutter, loading times, or graphical pop-in are the issue. GGG says an SSD should improve loading times and reduce stuttering and pop-in; it does not address network latency.
Older advice on GGG’s known-issues page discusses frame-rate spikes, GPU temperature, and power settings, but it is not a current hardware-specific diagnosis. Measure the symptom and consult current vendor guidance before changing advanced driver or power settings. GGG known-issues discussion

How to interpret the result
Change one thing at a time and compare the same symptom. For connection tests, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, your usual gateway with another available gateway, or your normal route with a VPN only when MTR suggests a routing issue. For a local hitch, compare latency with the performance metrics rather than relying on the word “lag.” If symptoms persist across local network changes, routes, or gateways, the cause is not established by those tests alone: it may involve the public internet or game servers, and a local adjustment may not resolve it.
