A DayZ PBO error is usually fixed by identifying the exact PBO named in the message, then correcting the file, version, signature, dependency, or load-order problem that prevents the server from accepting it. Do not begin by deleting the server’s persistence data. Capture the complete client message and the server RPT entry first; those two records determine which repair branch applies.

For a reliable fix, verify the mod path, confirm that the named addons/*.pbo file exists, update the Workshop copy on both client and server, install the mod’s public .bikey files in the server keys/ directory, and check dependencies. What a PBO error means
PBO is the packed addon format used by DayZ mods. The game must be able to find and open the required PBO, verify its signature when signature checking is enabled, and load any addon it depends on. A failure in any of those checks can appear as a “missing PBO” problem even when the underlying cause is a bad path, an incomplete download, an unequal client/server version, a missing key, or an incorrect load order.
The filename and the complete wording are more useful than the generic label “PBO error.” Bohemia Interactive’s DayZ error reference includes the explicit kick reason: “Client has a PBO which is missing a .bisign.” Treat the named file, mod, and wording as the diagnostic key.

Capture the evidence before changing files
Make a record while the error is visible. A restart can overwrite useful context, and changing several files at once makes it difficult to know which action worked.
- Copy the complete client message. Record the exact PBO filename, the mod name if shown, and whether the message says missing, not part of server data, unequal mods, missing
.bisign, or something else. - Save the matching server RPT section. Search the server’s RPT log for the PBO filename, addon name, signature wording, or dependency named by the client. Keep several lines before and after the match so the load sequence is visible.
- Check the appropriate log type. The DayZ Modding Wiki distinguishes engine-level missing-addon and signature failures in the RPT from script failures in
script_*.log. A script exception is not repaired by copying a random PBO; a PBO or signature failure should be diagnosed in the RPT first.
Keep the original logs until the server has been tested successfully. If the same PBO appears in both the client message and RPT, use that exact spelling when searching the filesystem. Similar-looking addon names can belong to different mods.
Repair a missing or unreadable PBO
Verify the -mod path
Every mod named in the startup parameter must point to a real directory relative to the server root. A typical parameter has this form:
-mod=@ModName;@OtherModFor each entry, check all of the following:
- The directory name matches the name in
-mod, including punctuation and spacing. - The directory is directly where the server expects it, rather than inside an extra nested folder created by an archive or Workshop copy.
- The mod contains an
addons/directory. - The
addons/directory contains the PBO named in the error and the other files shipped with that mod. - The server account can read the directory and files.
A common failed layout is a duplicate nesting such as a mod directory inside another directory with the same name. In that case, the path in -mod resolves to a folder without the expected addons/ directory. Move or reinstall the complete mod so the path points to the directory that actually contains addons/*.pbo.

Redownload incomplete Workshop content
If the expected PBO is absent, has an obviously incomplete mod directory, or the RPT reports that it cannot open the file, stop the server before repairing it. Update or redownload the named Workshop mod, then inspect the server copy and confirm that the expected PBO is present before restarting.
Do not assume that a successful Workshop subscription on the client repaired the server. The server has its own mod files, and an interrupted download, stale cache, or copied folder can leave one side incomplete. Replace the incomplete server copy with a complete download rather than adding individual files from unrelated versions.
Synchronize client and server versions
DayZ compares the addon data it receives from the server with the client’s installed data. Update both sides whenever a Workshop mod changes. A client can have a PBO with the right filename but different contents, while a server can retain an older build after the client has updated. That situation produces data-verification errors, “PBO not part of server data,” or the EQUAL_MOD unequal-mods condition listed in Bohemia’s error catalogue.
Use the same mod release on both sides, not merely the same mod name. Check that:

- The server’s Workshop download completed after the latest mod update.
- The client is not using a different branch or manually altered copy.
- The complete launch list is the same in content and intended order.
- No old duplicate directory is being selected by the server’s
-modpath.
After updating, restart the server and the game client so neither process continues using files already loaded into memory. If the error changes from a missing file to a signature or dependency message, that is useful progress: the original path or version problem has been removed and the next validation stage is now visible.
Repair .bisign and .bikey failures
Understand the two signature files
A PBO can carry a .bisign signature used to prove that it was signed by an accepted key. Workshop mods commonly include a Keys folder containing public .bikey files. The server uses those public keys for client-server signature verification; the private signing material is not something you copy into the server.

It is a kick reason, not a general indication that the mod is missing. Reinstall or redownload the complete mod so its PBO and corresponding signature are restored.
Install the accepted public keys
- Stop the DayZ server.
- Open the repaired mod’s
Keysfolder and identify every public.bikeysupplied for that mod. - Copy the required
.bikeyfiles into the server’s rootkeys/directory. Use the server’s actual root, not a similarly named mod folder. - Remove only obsolete key files when you have confirmed they belong to an old or rejected version; do not delete the entire key collection as a shortcut.
- Start the server and review the RPT for signature-verification messages.
A missing or stale key can reject an otherwise present PBO. Conversely, copying a key does not fix an unsigned or mismatched PBO. The PBO signature must validate against an accepted public key, so repair the complete mod and its key set together.

Use signature verification tooling when needed
If the PBO and key are present but the server still rejects the client, use a signature-verification tool appropriate to your DayZ server setup to check that the PBO was signed by the accepted key. This distinguishes a genuinely invalid signature from a key placed in the wrong directory. The verification result and the RPT entry should agree before you return the mod to the full load list.
Resolve dependencies and load order
Some mods do not stand alone. A required addon may be packaged in another mod, and the dependent mod must be loaded after it. When the RPT names a missing addon rather than the PBO you expected, follow that dependency name instead of repeatedly reinstalling the top-level mod.
- Read the mod author’s dependency list and identify each required mod.
- Install the dependency completely, including its
addons/files and any required public keys. - Add the dependency to
-modbefore the mod that requires it. - Start the server with that pair and check the RPT before adding more content.
Wrong load order can look like a missing-PBO failure because the engine reaches a dependent addon before the files it needs are available. Keep the order documented, especially after a mod update changes its requirements. If the dependency itself reports a missing file, repair that lower-level mod first.

When the server starts and players can join without mods, but a large mod list fails, changing every directory at once is slow and obscures the cause. Binary search is faster and repeatable.

- Confirm a clean baseline: start vanilla, record that it reaches the expected ready state, and save the RPT.
- Split the mod list into two roughly equal groups. Keep the intended dependency order inside each group.
- Start with the first group and test a client join. If it fails, the offender is in that group; if it succeeds, test the second group.
- Split the failing group in half and repeat.
- Continue until one mod, or a small interacting set, remains.
- Reinstall or update that mod, verify its dependencies and keys, and retest it alone before rebuilding the full list.
This method identifies a bad, outdated, incomplete, or incompatible mod without risking unrelated files. If each half works alone but the combined list fails, the problem is likely an interaction, duplicate dependency, or load-order conflict; compare the two groups’ shared requirements and order rather than declaring either mod independently broken.

Protect persistent world data
Do not delete storage_1/ as a first response to a PBO error. Storage deletion can wipe persistent world data and does not repair a missing PBO, signature, key, dependency, or version mismatch. Leave persistence untouched while you correct mod files, keys, and launch parameters.
Only investigate storage corruption when the symptoms point to persistence rather than addon loading. Back up the storage first, preserve the relevant RPT and script logs, and use the logs to establish that the storage itself is the failing component. A clean vanilla start or a corrected mod path is not evidence that storage should be removed.
Common DayZ PBO situations
“How do I fix a missing PBO?”
Copy the exact filename from the message, locate the server mod named in -mod, and verify that the file exists directly under its addons/ directory. If it does not, stop the server and redownload the complete Workshop mod. If it does exist, check for a duplicate nested folder, then compare the server and client versions before investigating signatures or dependencies.
“Why does the client have a PBO that is not on the server?”
The client and server are not using the same effective mod set. Compare the full launch list and the actual files selected by each side. Remove an unintended client-only mod, or install and correctly reference the required server mod. If the names match but contents differ, update both Workshop copies and restart both processes.

“How do I fix a missing .bisign or .bikey?”
For a missing .bisign, restore the complete signed mod on the client rather than creating a replacement signature. For a missing .bikey, copy the mod’s required public key from its Keys folder into the server root keys/ directory. Then verify that the PBO is signed by that accepted key and confirm the result in the RPT.
“Why can I join vanilla but not a modded server?”
Vanilla success shows that the basic server and client connection work; it does not validate any mod. Use the vanilla RPT as a baseline, add half of the intended mod list, and apply binary search to the failing group. The final offender may be a single outdated mod, a missing dependency, a signature problem, or an interaction caused by load order.
