How to Fix PCSX2 Slowdowns, Stutter, and Audio Glitches

Check PCSX2's Speed counter during the slowdown before changing settings. Then test system power, graphics choices, storage, and audio synchronization in a controlled order.

If PCSX2 slows down, stutters, or crackles, first check whether the game is actually running below full speed. Turn on its performance counters and observe them while the problem occurs; then work through power, graphics, storage, and audio checks one at a time. This helps distinguish an emulator performance problem from an audio-only fault without applying a risky one-size-fits-all preset.

1. Update PCSX2 and reproduce the problem

Install the current PCSX2 version before changing settings, then replay the same game section where the problem occurs. Note whether it affects one game or several. If a title will not load or shows a black screen, the cause may be a damaged or incomplete disc image rather than performance; PCSX2 provides a Verify action in that game’s properties. See the PCSX2 General Issues guide.

If the issue appears limited to one title, check its compatibility information and wiki entry for known problems before changing global settings.

2. Measure speed during the slowdown

In PCSX2, open Settings > Graphics > OSD and enable all performance counters. Capture their readings while the stutter or slowdown is happening. PCSX2’s Performance Issues guide identifies the Speed reading as the game’s running speed. Compare it with the video output FPS: FPS alone does not tell you whether the game is emulating at its intended speed.

  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
  • Speed is below target: the emulator is not keeping up. If sound also slows, distorts, or breaks up, it may be following the emulation slowdown rather than indicating a faulty speaker or headset.
  • Speed is on target but the sound is wrong: investigate audio synchronization and current audio settings instead of assuming the graphics renderer is responsible.
  • Performance counters point to rendering or hardware limits: use them as clues, not as a universal diagnosis. Their meaning varies with hardware or software rendering mode.

PCSX2 describes the emulator as hardware-intensive, especially on the processor. Its counters are measurements of your current session, not a benchmark or a guarantee that a particular hardware upgrade will solve the problem.

3. Check power, workload, and drivers

Before changing emulator options, remove simple system-level constraints. PCSX2’s performance guidance recommends using a high-performance power plan or equivalent. On a laptop, test while plugged in and out of battery-saving mode. If the laptop has NVIDIA graphics, check whether WhisperMode is capping the frame rate.

If PCSX2 crashes when you open Settings or start a game, outdated GPU drivers are one possible cause. The Windows troubleshooting guide advises updating drivers for all GPUs in a laptop, including its integrated graphics. Confirm that your machine meets the current PCSX2 requirements as well; these checks can identify constraints but cannot guarantee a fix.

4. Keep graphics changes controlled

Unless you have a specific reason to test another renderer, leave the Graphics API on Automatic. PCSX2 recommends Automatic when you are unsure. The project’s graphics API guide describes Vulkan as fast across platforms, but notes instability on Intel integrated graphics and the need for up-to-date drivers. It also describes vendor-specific behavior with OpenGL, which is slower than Vulkan in its broad comparison, and different accuracy and performance characteristics for Direct3D 12 and 11. Those general comparisons do not predict how every driver and game will behave.

If you have a reason to test another API, change one setting and replay the same section. If it introduces glitches or worsens performance, restore the previous setting. For a problem confined to one game, use its Game Properties rather than altering a global setting that affects other titles.

5. Check USB storage only when it is relevant

If the game’s ISO is on a USB-connected drive and the slowdown or counters suggest delays reading it, move the image to internal SATA or M.2 storage and compare the same gameplay section. PCSX2 explains that ISO access mirrors PS2 disc access: the many small reads can be penalized by USB latency. The project recommends SATA or M.2 storage for this reason in its performance guidance.

6. Treat older audio-mode advice as legacy guidance

Once you have checked emulation speed, look at the audio controls in your current PCSX2 version. Interface labels and recommended options can change, so prefer the settings and documentation shipped with that version.

Older PCSX2 guides describe TimeStretch as a way to keep audio synchronized with video, while noting that sound may slow when emulation falls below full speed. They describe Async Mix as allowing audio to play independently, with possible hangs or crashes in some games. These descriptions come from the 2012 PCSX2 configuration guide and 2014 troubleshooting FAQ; do not assume their controls or recommendations match a current release. If you test a synchronization option, change one thing at a time and check both sound and game stability.

7. Collect a useful report if the problem persists

For a persistent problem, follow PCSX2’s Diagnosing & Reporting instructions to capture a log:

  1. Select Tools > Enable File Logging.
  2. Restart PCSX2 and reproduce the problem.
  3. Close PCSX2 and retrieve emulog.txt from the logs directory. Do not reopen PCSX2 before collecting it; restarting can remove useful information.

For a graphical glitch, include a GS Dump as the guide requests. A screenshot of the OSD counters taken during the slowdown can also show helpers what the emulator was reporting at the time.
