A perfinfo.dll error should not be fixed by downloading a replacement DLL from a random website. Microsoft’s published documentation does not identify this filename’s owner, default path, or Windows release scope, so the safe route is to identify the copy that failed, verify its provenance, repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, and then address performance-counter or application-specific registration problems. The steps below also cover 32-bit/64-bit mismatches and what to collect if the error remains.
What a perfinfo.dll error means
A DLL is a library that another process loads when it needs particular functions. The name perfinfo.dll by itself does not prove that the file is a standard Windows component. The authoritative Microsoft material available for this problem does not identify an owner, a guaranteed Windows path, a supported release range, or whether the file is built into Windows or installed by another provider.

That uncertainty matters. A game launcher, overlay, monitoring utility, or Windows tool may report that the library is missing, cannot be loaded, has an invalid entry point, or caused an exception. Those messages describe a failed load, not necessarily a damaged file. Windows performance-counter providers are DLLs loaded by the performance-counter infrastructure; installation errors, incorrect registry data, missing exports, and exceptions inside a provider can all stop loading. A program can also request a DLL supplied by a particular application rather than by Windows.
Do not assume that a file named in an error dialog belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The complete path, signer, file version, and the process that requested it are the evidence needed to choose a repair.

First identify the failing copy
Record the exact symptom
Write down the complete message, the application that displayed it, and what you were doing. “The application was unable to start,” a Performance Monitor provider warning, and a game crashing while an overlay starts can have different owners and remedies. If the message appears only when one game or utility launches, record that product’s version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Find the path shown by Windows
Open Event Viewer by pressing Win, typing Event Viewer, and selecting the desktop application. Check Windows Logs > Application and, when the event concerns counters or providers, Applications and Services Logs for the relevant performance or diagnostic provider. Open the event and copy the full path, module name, event source, event ID, and timestamp. If the dialog gives a path, copy it exactly instead of retyping it.
Check the file’s properties and signature
- In File Explorer, browse to the recorded path.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and note General details such as size, creation date, and location.
- Review the Details tab for product name, company, file description, and file version. An empty or contradictory description is a reason to stop and investigate rather than replace the file.
- If present, open Digital Signatures, select the signer, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid. A signature does not by itself prove that the file is the correct version, but an unsigned copy in an unexpected folder should not be copied into a system directory.
Do not overwrite the file with one downloaded from a DLL-collection site. A similarly named library can have different exports, architecture, or malicious content, and placing it in a system folder can create additional failures.
Why the library may fail to load
Windows component damage or an incomplete update
If protected Windows files or the component store are damaged, a dependent process may report a missing or corrupt DLL even when the immediate problem is elsewhere. DISM repairs the component store; SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
Performance-counter registration or exports
A performance-counter provider is discovered through registration data and loaded by the counter infrastructure. A provider can fail when its registry entries point to the wrong file, required exports are absent, installation did not complete, or the provider throws an exception during initialization. These failures commonly appear in Performance Monitor, WMI-related collection, or diagnostic software rather than during ordinary file browsing.
32-bit and 64-bit incompatibility
A 32-bit provider cannot run inside a 64-bit consumer process, and a 64-bit provider cannot run inside a 32-bit consumer process. Windows’ System32 and SysWOW64 arrangement supports compatible built-in providers; it does not make an arbitrary third-party DLL interchangeable. Installing a 32-bit game utility alongside a 64-bit monitoring service, or repairing only one side of a split installation, can therefore leave the error unchanged.

Application-owned installation damage
If the path is under a game, launcher, hardware utility, or monitoring application’s folder, that product may own the DLL. An application update, partial uninstall, quarantine event, or wrong-architecture plugin can leave a reference to a file that no longer matches the installed program. In that case, repairing or reinstalling the named application is safer than changing Windows registry entries.

Perform these steps in order. Stop when the original operation works again; unnecessary registry edits can turn a single-provider problem into a broader one.
1. Preserve the evidence
- Save the error text and the full path.
- Record the affected program, its version, and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit if that information is available.
- Note whether the failure is repeatable, occurs only after startup, or appears only when counters, WMI, an overlay, or a monitoring tool is active.
Do not delete or rename the DLL before recording these details. Support staff need the original path and event data to determine ownership.
2. Verify provenance before touching the file
Use the Properties and Digital Signatures checks above. Compare the company and product fields with the application whose folder contains the file. If the file is in a temporary, download, or unknown user-writable folder, treat it as untrusted and scan the system with your existing security software; do not move it into a Windows directory. If the signature is invalid or the owner cannot be established, preserve the file for analysis instead of registering it manually.
3. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth. - Let the operation reach completion. It can appear to pause while Windows obtains or validates repair files; closing the window early can leave the component store only partly repaired.
DISM supplies the files required to repair corrupted Windows components. If it reports that source files cannot be found, use a Windows installation source that matches the installed edition and build, or consult your administrator before selecting an alternate source. Do not substitute a random DLL for a missing repair source.
4. Check protected files with SFC
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, run
sfc /scannow. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent and read the final message. It may report that no integrity violations were found, that damaged files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired.
- If SFC says repairs were made, restart Windows before testing. If it cannot repair everything, keep the result and the CBS log for support rather than repeatedly running it without diagnosing the underlying component problem.
5. Restart and reproduce the original failure
Restart Windows, then perform the same action that produced the error. Test the affected game, launcher, Performance Monitor view, or WMI collection path—not merely whether the DLL is visible in File Explorer. A successful restart after DISM and SFC indicates that a protected component was involved; it does not establish who originally owned perfinfo.dll.

6. Repair performance counters when the symptom is counter-related
Use this branch when Event Viewer, Performance Monitor, WMI counter collection, or a diagnostic utility identifies a provider or Perflib error. Microsoft’s performance-counter rebuild procedure restores counter registration and may require matching Windows installation media. Follow the procedure for the exact Windows edition and architecture, and review the relevant Perflib registry entries for the provider named in the event.
Do not copy registry entries from another computer or run a generic “DLL registration” command against an unknown file. Counter providers can require specific registry values and exported functions; forcing registration of the wrong architecture can produce a new load failure. Export any registry key before an authorized change, and restart the collecting service or Windows only after the documented rebuild has completed.
7. Repair the application that owns the DLL
If the path and signature identify a named game, launcher, monitoring package, or vendor provider, use that product’s official installer or its installed Repair option. Record the installed version and architecture first. Reinstall the same architecture expected by the consumer: a 32-bit consumer needs a 32-bit provider, while a 64-bit consumer needs a 64-bit provider. Allow the installer to recreate its own files and registry data; do not extract a DLL from another machine.
For a game, also use the launcher’s file-verification feature if one is provided, then reinstall the game’s own runtime or monitoring component only through the launcher or publisher’s installer. Disable optional overlays and performance monitors temporarily to determine whether one of them is the process requesting the DLL.
8. Capture logs if the error remains
- Export or copy the Event Viewer event, including source, event ID, path, and timestamp.
- Keep the final DISM and SFC results.
- For SFC repairs, retain the CBS log referenced by Windows so support can identify the file and repair transaction.
- Provide the DLL’s Properties and signature details, the owning application’s version, and the consumer’s architecture.
This evidence lets support distinguish a protected Windows-file problem from a provider-registration, architecture, or application-installation problem. If ownership is still unknown, do not manually replace, rename, or register the DLL.
Choose the remedy from the evidence
| What the evidence shows | Most appropriate action | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Protected Windows files or component-store errors; failure is system-wide | Run DISM, then SFC, restart, and retest | Downloading a replacement DLL |
| Perflib, Performance Monitor, WMI, or counter-provider event | Use the Windows performance-counter rebuild procedure for the installed edition; review the named Perflib entries | Blind registry edits or registering an unknown file |
| File is inside a named application’s installation folder | Repair or reinstall that application with its official installer and matching architecture | Copying a DLL from another application or PC |
| 32-bit consumer with a 64-bit provider, or the reverse | Install the provider build matching the consumer, or use a compatible consumer | Putting the file in System32 or SysWOW64 to force a load |
| Unsigned or unexpected path with no established owner | Preserve evidence, scan with existing security software, and seek support | Trusting a DLL-download site or manually registering it |
Architecture checks that matter for games and tools
Check the architecture of both sides of the load: the process reporting the error and the provider DLL. A 32-bit game may use a 32-bit overlay or counter provider even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit monitoring service cannot load a 32-bit provider merely because both files have the same name. If an installer offers separate x86 and x64 components, install the one required by the consumer and keep related services on the same supported architecture.

Do not infer architecture from the folder name alone. System32 and SysWOW64 have historical naming that can be confusing, and application directories may use their own layout. Use the application documentation, installer selection, file Details, or support logs to establish the architecture before changing files.
Common mistakes and recovery
Downloading the first matching filename
Matching text is not matching identity. A replacement can omit required exports, have a different build, or be malicious. Remove any untrusted copy you downloaded, restore the original installation through DISM/SFC or the owning application’s installer, and run your existing security checks.
Registering a DLL without knowing its provider model
Performance-counter providers use registration data and may be loaded into the consumer process. A generic registration command cannot repair missing exports, a provider exception, or an architecture mismatch. Use the documented counter rebuild for the specific provider instead.
Replacing a system file while Windows is running
Even a correctly signed file can be the wrong version for the installed build. Let DISM and SFC select compatible protected files. If Windows requests installation media during component repair, use media matching the edition and build rather than a file copied from another release.
Repeating the same test without isolating the consumer
Disable one optional overlay, monitor, or plugin at a time and retest. If the error disappears only when one component is disabled, repair that component and report its version and architecture. Keep the change reversible so you can restore normal game features after testing.

When a clean reinstall is justified
A reinstall is reasonable only after the owner is identified and repair is unsuccessful. For an application-owned provider, uninstall the application through Windows’ installed-apps settings, restart if prompted, and install the current official package that matches the consumer architecture. Back up game saves and configuration files before removing a game or launcher. For a Windows component, do not attempt to “uninstall” the DLL; continue with DISM/SFC, the counter rebuild, or supported Windows recovery options guided by the collected logs.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and it includes settings, cleanup, privacy, vulnerability-check, real-time boost, file-shredder, and crash-log features. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact perfinfo.dll path and owner first. Then run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth, run sfc /scannow, restart, and retest. If the event is a performance-counter failure, use the edition-matched counter rebuild procedure; if the file belongs to an application, repair that application with the correct 32-bit or 64-bit installer. Avoid arbitrary DLL downloads and manual registration of an unknown file.
