If phpLDAPadmin rejects an administrator login, first check the server entry’s login/auth_type and then use the complete distinguished name (DN) that exists in that LDAP naming context. In interactive cookie or session mode, entering only admin normally fails; an account might instead be cn=admin,dc=example,dc=org or, for the OpenLDAP configuration database, cn=admin,cn=config. The same error can also indicate a failed user search, an incorrect search base, an access-control restriction, or a password policy problem.

What phpLDAPadmin is actually doing during login
phpLDAPadmin does not decide independently what the word “admin” means. Each server entry in its active config.php has a login configuration, and the login/auth_type value determines whether the web interface asks for credentials, searches for a user, or uses credentials saved in the configuration file.

For a normal administrator who should type a password in the browser, cookie or session is the relevant choice. Do not switch to config merely to make an error disappear: it removes the interactive login requirement and places a reusable secret in a web-application configuration file.
Step 1: Confirm the active server entry and authentication mode
- Open the
config.phpfile used by the phpLDAPadmin installation serving the failing login page. If several installations or virtual hosts exist, make sure you are editing the one that generated the page you are using. - Find the server entry whose name or description appears on the phpLDAPadmin login page. A correct change in a different server entry has no effect on the selected tree.
- Inspect
login/auth_type. Usecookieorsessionwhen the administrator should supply credentials interactively. Useconfigonly when a static credential is an intentional design decision. - After changing configuration, reload the page and clear an old phpLDAPadmin browser session if the interface continues to show stale state. A session cookie can preserve the result of an earlier attempt, but it cannot repair an incorrect DN or password.
In interactive modes, the example configuration expects login_dn and login_pass to remain empty. Those fields are not the administrator’s browser login; they are static credentials used by config mode.

Step 2: Use the DN that exists in the selected naming context
LDAP authenticates a distinguished name, not a universal username called admin. A DN includes the relative name and every parent component needed to identify one entry. The suffix is created by your LDAP deployment, so do not copy an example suffix unless it matches your directory.

Case, commas, and each dc component matter. A DN for dc=example,dc=org does not identify an entry in dc=example,dc=net. Likewise, an administrator in the regular directory database is not automatically an administrator of the separate cn=config database.

phpLDAPadmin may need to search the directory before it can bind as the person who entered the form. The bind_id and bind_pass settings provide that search identity when anonymous search is disabled. They are not a replacement for the end user’s DN and password in cookie or session mode.

- If anonymous search is allowed, leave
bind_idandbind_passblank as the example configuration recommends. - If anonymous search is denied, set
bind_idto a service or administrator DN that is permitted to search the configured base, and give it the matching password inbind_pass. - Never set a nonblank
bind_idwhile leaving its password mismatched or empty unless the directory explicitly supports that authentication arrangement. - After the search finds a user, phpLDAPadmin still attempts the user’s own bind. A valid search bind cannot compensate for a wrong browser-entered password or a DN that is not allowed to bind.
This distinction explains a common confusing symptom: the directory can be searchable in the interface, yet the administrator still receives a login error because the final bind uses different credentials.
Step 4: Check the login attribute, base, and object-class filter
The documented default is login_attr='dn'. With that setting, the value typed into the login form is treated as a DN. If you changed the attribute to uid, phpLDAPadmin searches for an entry matching (uid=<entered value>), then attempts to bind as the DN returned by that search.
- Inspect
login_attr. If it isdn, enter the complete DN rather than a short name. - If it is
uidor another attribute, verify that the administrator entry actually contains that attribute and that the value is unique in the search scope. - Check
login/base. It must contain the administrator entry. A base below the administrator’s branch, or a base in a different naming context, produces a failed search even when the password is correct. - Check
login/class. Its object-class filter must not exclude the administrator entry. A root DN often has a different object-class combination from ordinary user entries. - If the root DN has no
uid, enable the documented fallback-to-DN behavior if your installation provides it, or enter the full DN while retaining a compatible login attribute.
A search-based login therefore has two independent requirements: phpLDAPadmin must be able to find exactly one permitted entry, and the LDAP server must accept a bind using the password supplied for that entry.

Step 5: Configure and select cn=config explicitly
The OpenLDAP configuration database is a separate naming context. Autodetection of cn=config does not work flawlessly, so a regular directory tree can appear while the configuration tree remains unavailable or invisible.
- Add both the configuration naming context and the regular directory suffix to the selected server’s
server/base. The Debian procedure uses an arrangement equivalent toarray('cn=config','dc=example,dc=org'). - Reload phpLDAPadmin and select the
cn=configtree from the server bases. - Log in with the administrator DN and password belonging to that naming context, commonly
cn=admin,cn=configwhen that is how the deployment was initialized. - Do not assume that
cn=admin,dc=example,dc=orgcan see or modifycn=config. The Debian guidance specifically warns that the usual directory administrator may not have access to the configuration database.
If the regular suffix works but cn=config fails, treat that as a naming-context or permission problem first, not proof that the password is wrong.
Step 6: Interpret “Invalid Username or Password” correctly
phpLDAPadmin’s login source emits the message “Invalid Username or Password.” The wording is intentionally broad. It can mean a wrong DN, a wrong password, a failed search, an incorrect naming context, or an account that the LDAP server refuses to bind.

Test the same identity outside the web interface
From the host running phpLDAPadmin, test the exact DN and password with an LDAP client such as ldapwhoami. For example, adapt the server URI, DN, and password to your environment:

If it fails, inspect the LDAP server logs and correct the directory-side problem before changing phpLDAPadmin. If it succeeds while phpLDAPadmin fails, compare the selected server entry, login base, login attribute, search bind, and protocol settings character for character.
Check server-side records and policy
- Review LDAP logs at the time of the failed attempt. They can distinguish an unknown DN, invalid credentials, unavailable database, and an access-control denial more reliably than the browser message.
- Confirm that the password was changed in the same LDAP database represented by the selected tree. A password reset in the regular suffix does not reset the
cn=configadministrator. - Inspect ACLs. The account may exist but lack permission to bind, search the configured base, or read attributes required by the login search.
- Check account lockout and expiration rules. A correct password can still be rejected when the account is locked, expired, or otherwise disabled.
- Check TLS requirements. A server may require an encrypted connection or a particular certificate policy before permitting a bind. The exact requirement is deployment-specific.

Choosing a durable configuration
For individual administrator logins
Use cookie or session, leave static login credentials blank, and require each administrator to enter the DN and password for the intended naming context. Set a search bind only when anonymous search is disabled, and grant that bind the minimum search access needed to locate users.

For a deliberately unattended interface
config mode can supply a fixed DN and password from config.php. The trade-off is explicit: there is no interactive login for that server entry, and the file becomes the holder of a privileged secret. Restrict access to the file and to the web interface, and use this mode only when the operational requirement is understood.
For configuration-database administration
Expose cn=config as an explicit server base and document its administrator DN separately from the regular directory administrator. This prevents a successful login to one naming context from being mistaken for access to the other.
