Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPrinter error 0x80004005 is Windows HRESULT E_FAIL, meaning “Unspecified failure.” It is a generic result, not proof that the printer hardware has failed. The practical repair is to identify the connection type, then check the path, printer registration, driver, print queue, and Print Spooler in that order. If your screen really says 0x800040005 with five zeros after the x, record the complete message and where it appears: that nine-digit string is not the standard HRESULT documented by Microsoft.
What printer error 0x80004005 means
Microsoft lists 0x80004005 as HRESULT E_FAIL: “Unspecified failure.” Microsoft’s Universal Print documentation uses the same mapping. Because the result is deliberately nonspecific, the code alone cannot identify a bad print head, broken cable, corrupt driver, stopped service, permission problem, or application fault.

The wording around the code is more useful than the number by itself. “Windows cannot connect to the printer” points toward device registration, network access, permissions, or a shared-printer path. An error while adding a shared printer points toward the host computer, credentials, connector, or temporary files. A job that remains in the queue points toward the driver or Print Spooler. A failure only in Word, Excel, or another application points toward that application or the document.

Check whether the code was typed correctly
The commonly documented value has eight hexadecimal characters after the prefix: 0x80004005. A display or search query containing 0X800040005 has one extra zero. Do not assume the two values are interchangeable. Take a screenshot or copy the complete message, including the action that triggered it, before changing settings.

Identify the setup before changing anything
| Connection or situation | Most relevant failure layer | First observation |
|---|---|---|
| USB printer | Hardware path, cable, device registration, or driver | Whether Windows still lists the printer and whether another USB port or a known-good cable changes detection |
| Wi-Fi printer | Network path, device registration, or driver | Whether the computer and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network and the printer shows as available |
| Shared or network printer | Host availability, permissions, connector, registration, or driver | Whether the host computer is on, sharing is enabled, and your account is allowed to use the printer |
| Universal Print | Cloud registration, connector, permissions, or a temporary-file condition | Whether the printer is still assigned to your account and the connector reports online |
| One application only | Application, document settings, or Office installation | Whether a Windows test page prints successfully |
This classification prevents a common mistake: replacing a USB cable will not repair a Wi-Fi registration problem, and reinstalling a driver will not correct a permission issue on a shared printer.
Repair workflow for Windows 11 and Windows 10
1. Confirm the exact error and trigger
- Write down the exact code, capitalization, and full sentence.
- Record whether it appeared while printing, adding the printer, connecting to a shared queue, or using a specific application.
- Note whether the printer is connected by USB, Wi-Fi, a wired network, a shared host, or Universal Print.
These details determine which branch to follow after the basic checks. If the code is not exactly 0x80004005, use the complete message rather than applying this HRESULT’s interpretation.
2. Run Microsoft’s printer troubleshooter
Microsoft’s current Windows guidance routes printer diagnostics through the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for printer problems, and follow the printer troubleshooting flow. On Windows 11 you can also open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Printer when that entry is available. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Printer, and choose Run the troubleshooter.

Allow the checks to finish before launching another print job. If Get Help reports a specific action, perform it and then retry a test page; do not treat the generic 0x80004005 number as a diagnosis that overrides the troubleshooter’s finding.
3. Power-cycle the printer and verify the physical path
- Turn the printer off.
- Unplug its power cable for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect power, turn the printer on, and wait until it reaches its ready state.
- For USB, firmly reconnect the cable at both ends. If the cable is damaged or intermittently detected, a replacement USB printer cable must have connectors that match both the printer and the computer; cable replacement is relevant only to a wired USB setup.
- For Wi-Fi, confirm that the computer and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. A guest network, isolated wireless band, or changed router can prevent discovery even when both devices show a signal.
Check the printer’s own panel for paper, cover, ink or toner, and offline warnings. Those conditions are separate from HRESULT E_FAIL but can make a successful Windows connection appear to be a failed print.
4. Remove and add the printer again
Re-registering the device repairs stale Windows entries and incorrect connection details.

- Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer and choose Remove or Remove device. Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows if the device remains listed, shows as offline, or cannot be removed cleanly.
- Return to the same page, select Add device, and wait for discovery.
- Choose the correct local, USB, wireless, or network entry. Complete any prompts for the printer’s address, shared location, or account credentials.
For a shared printer, the computer hosting the queue must be powered on and still sharing it. If Windows requests credentials, use an account authorized by that host; repeatedly entering an account without permission will not repair the connection.
5. Install the current model-specific driver
Microsoft notes that most printers need a current driver and directs users to the printer manufacturer’s driver guidance. Identify the exact model shown on the printer and download the driver intended for your Windows edition from the manufacturer’s official support page. Follow that installer’s instructions, then return to Printers & scanners and make sure the reinstalled queue uses the intended device.
A driver update is especially important when the error began after a Windows upgrade, when Windows shows a generic printer name, or when the queue accepts jobs but the printer never receives them. Avoid installing a driver for a similar-looking model: a near match can create a queue that appears present but cannot communicate correctly.

6. Clear the queue and reset Print Spooler
Microsoft describes Print Spooler as the component that manages print jobs in Windows. A stuck job or a damaged temporary file can therefore block every later job, including a test page.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Select the printer, open its queue, and cancel every pending document. If a job refuses to cancel, continue with the service reset.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if requested. - In the Services window, right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS, and press Enter. Approve access if Windows asks. - Delete the files inside that folder. Delete the queued files, not the
PRINTERSfolder itself. - Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- Open the service’s Properties, set Startup type to Automatic, select Apply, and then OK.
Submit one new job after the reset. If the queue immediately fills again, stop submitting documents and continue with the driver and connection checks; repeatedly adding jobs only recreates the blockage.

USB: detection and cable checks
Disconnecting and reconnecting the cable after the printer has fully powered up can force Windows to enumerate it again. Check whether the printer appears under Printers & scanners and whether Windows plays its device-connected notification. If it does not, try another USB port and a correctly matched replacement cable. Do not apply USB cable remedies to a wireless or shared setup.
Wi-Fi or wired network: discovery and address changes
Make sure the printer and computer are on the same network, then remove and add the printer again so Windows can discover its current connection. A printer moved to a different router, SSID, or isolated guest network may remain visible in Windows while no longer being reachable. If discovery repeatedly fails, use the printer’s documented network-add workflow and confirm that the device is ready before testing.
Recommended Free Tools
Shared printers: host and permissions
A shared queue depends on more than the client PC. Confirm that the host computer is running, the printer is still installed there, and sharing remains enabled. A change of password, account, network profile, or host name can invalidate the client’s saved connection. Remove the old client entry and add the shared printer again, supplying credentials that the host accepts. If other users also fail, troubleshoot the host and its Print Spooler before changing every client computer.
Universal Print: a different failure path
Universal Print can involve cloud registration, a connector, account assignment, and temporary files in addition to the local driver and queue. Confirm that the printer is still assigned to the intended account and that the connector is online. A generic E_FAIL result in this context does not establish that the physical printer is defective; resolve the registration or permission condition reported by the Universal Print administration tools, then reinstall the printer in Windows if its local entry is stale.
Use the test-page result to choose the next action
| Result | Likely layer | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Printer is not detected at all | Power, cable, network, or device registration | Repeat the power and path checks, then remove and add the printer |
| Printer is detected but test page stays queued | Print Spooler, queue, or driver | Clear the queue, reset Spooler, and install the model-specific driver |
| Test page returns 0x80004005 | Registration, driver, connection, or service | Repeat the ordered workflow without skipping the reinstallation and Spooler steps |
| Test page prints but the original document fails | Application or document | Test another application, a new document, printer selection, and page settings |
| Only a shared printer fails | Host, permissions, connector, or shared registration | Check the host and account access, then remove and re-add the shared queue |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the code identifies a hardware defect: E_FAIL is intentionally generic.
- Deleting the wrong folder: clear the files inside
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERSonly after stopping Print Spooler. - Changing drivers before identifying the model: use the exact model and the manufacturer’s current guidance.
- Replacing a cable on a wireless printer: cable troubleshooting applies to USB connections.
- Testing only from the failing application: a Windows test page is the control that shows whether the basic print path works.
- Ignoring the extra zero: preserve the full nine-digit string if that is what the dialog displays and report the surrounding message.
When to seek further help
Escalate to the printer manufacturer or your organization’s administrator when the printer cannot complete its own startup checks, the manufacturer’s driver installer fails, a shared queue requires permissions you do not control, or Universal Print shows an account or connector condition. Provide the exact error text, Windows version, printer model, connection type, the step that fails, and whether a Windows test page prints. Those details let support distinguish a local queue problem from a host, network, or service problem without repeating every step.
