Sony documents these as general PS5 game-troubleshooting steps, not as guaranteed cures for a particular PS2 emulation defect. The most useful diagnosis is whether the problem affects one title or several: a single-title fault should go to that game’s publisher, while problems across multiple games may indicate a console issue.

Identify the failure before changing anything
Write down exactly what happens before trying a fix. “The emulator is broken” is too broad for you or a support technician to act on. Note the PS2 title, the point at which the problem appears, whether it is a visual artifact, a complete freeze, an application crash, or an input failure, and whether another PS2 title behaves normally. Record any error code exactly as displayed. If the fault can be reproduced, note the sequence of button presses and menu choices that leads to it.
Visual glitches
A visual glitch can mean a missing texture, incorrect geometry, flickering image, corrupted text, or a display that becomes unusable while sound continues. Capture a screenshot or short video if the console allows it. Do not assume that clearing the cache or changing an undocumented emulator option will correct it; Sony’s published guidance does not identify a PS2-specific graphics toggle or compatibility setting.

Freezes and crashes
Separate a temporary pause from a title that stops responding and returns you to the PS5 home screen. Record whether the crash occurs at startup, while loading a save, during a particular scene, or after a repeatable action. That distinction helps determine whether testing without the existing save is worthwhile and gives a publisher a reproducible report.
Controller symptoms
Describe the exact input behavior: no buttons register, only some buttons fail, an analog stick drifts, input is delayed, or the game ignores commands after a menu transition. State which controller you used, whether it was connected by USB or wirelessly, and whether that controller works in another game. A controller that works in other titles but fails in one PS2 release points toward a title-specific input problem rather than proving that the hardware is defective.

Use this low-risk repair sequence first
Perform the checks in order. After each one, reproduce the original problem in the same place so you know whether that step changed anything. These instructions apply Sony’s general digital-game troubleshooting to a PS2 title on PS5; they are not a claim that every emulation defect has a user-side fix.

- Verify the installation is complete. Open the game from the PS5 home screen and check that the download and installation have finished. A title that is still installing can behave differently from a fully installed copy. Do not begin save troubleshooting until the installation status is complete.
- Check for a game update. Highlight the title on the home screen, open the options menu, and choose the option that checks for an update. Install any update offered, then restart the game and test the same reproduction steps.
- Update PS5 system software. In the PS5 settings, use the system-software update controls and install any available update. Restart the console after the update and test again. Keeping the system current is part of Sony’s general crash guidance, but Sony does not state that a particular system version fixes a particular PS2 emulator fault.
- Test without the existing save. If the game reaches its opening screen, start a new game or otherwise launch it from the beginning without loading the affected save. This is an isolation test, not an instruction to erase your data. If the new game works while the original save still fails, preserve the original save and report that result to support. Do not delete your only save as an initial troubleshooting step.
- Delete and reinstall the digital game. If installation, update, system-software, and save isolation checks do not change the behavior, delete the game and download it again from your library. Reinstalling is the destructive step in this sequence, so make sure you know how your saved data is stored before removing the application. After the download and installation finish, repeat the same test that previously failed.
How to interpret the result
If an update or reinstall changes the behavior, note which version and which step produced the change in your support record. If the same glitch appears in a clean launch and after a fresh installation, that is useful evidence that the issue is not simply a damaged local install. If only one save fails, keep the working new-game result and the affected save’s circumstances separate when you contact the publisher.
Fix controller problems by checking compatibility first
A PS2-era controller is not a supported PS5 controller. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states: “Controllers intended for use with PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, and PlayStation®3 consoles, such as the analog controllers (DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2) and the DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller, are not compatible with the PS5 console.” A physical PS2 controller therefore should not be treated as a normal plug-and-play input device for a PS5 PS2 title.

Pair a compatible DualSense over USB
Use a controller designed for PS5, such as a DualSense, for the compatibility test. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable, then press the PS button. This wired pairing check removes wireless pairing as a variable. Once the controller is recognized, launch the title and test the same buttons that failed. If the controller does not appear in the PS5 interface, try another known-good cable or compatible controller before blaming the game.
Read the pattern across games

Buying or replacing a controller can address an incompatible or faulty controller, but it is not an established remedy for a graphical emulation glitch or a game crash. A compatible controller that works elsewhere does not prove that a new controller will cure a title-specific input defect.

PS5 Safe Mode provides system-level maintenance tools. It is reasonable to consider these when more than one game is affected or when the console shows broader performance symptoms, but they should not replace the installation, update, save-isolation, and controller checks above.
Update system software from Safe Mode
Safe Mode includes an option to update system software. Use it when the normal settings update path cannot complete or when support directs you to use the maintenance menu. An update can address system software problems, but Sony’s documentation does not promise that it resolves a specific PS2 emulation artifact.
Repair storage
The Safe Mode menu includes a storage-repair option. Use it only when the console or support guidance indicates a storage problem. Storage repair is a system maintenance action, not a title-specific emulator setting; record what prompted you to use it and retest afterward.

Clear System Software Cache
Safe Mode offers “Clear System Software Cache.” Sony describes cache clearing as a way to address system-feature issues or performance drops. It may be appropriate when symptoms extend beyond one title, but there is no official statement that clearing the cache fixes a particular PS2 Classics glitch. Do not present it as a guaranteed emulator repair.

“Rebuild Database” scans the console’s content and recreates its database. This can be considered for broader menu, storage, or content-indexing symptoms. It does not provide a documented per-game graphics or controller compatibility switch, so keep the original reproduction notes and compare the result with the same test afterward.
Reset PS5 as a last resort
Safe Mode also contains reset options. A PS5 reset deletes user data. Back up what you need and reserve a reset for late-stage escalation after less destructive steps and support advice. Resetting the console merely to chase a single-title PS2 glitch can create data loss without addressing a publisher-side defect.
Decide whether the fault belongs to one title or the console
The number of affected games determines the most useful escalation route. Test another installed title, preferably another PS2 release and, if available, a non-PS2 game. Use the same compatible controller and note whether the second title reaches gameplay normally.

“One title versus multiple titles” is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular emulator defect. A single game can expose a console issue, and a broad-looking issue can still originate in one controller or one installation. The pattern tells you which support team is most likely to have the relevant records and tools.

Prepare a support report that can be reproduced
Support can act faster when the report describes an experiment rather than a conclusion. Assemble the following before contacting the publisher, PlayStation Support, or PlayStation Repairs:
- The exact PS2 title name and, if the console displays one, its software or update version.
- The PS5 system-software version shown in the console settings.
- The symptom category: visual glitch, freeze, crash, or controller behavior.
- The precise reproduction sequence, including the menu, level, save, or button press where the fault appears.
- Any error code, written exactly as shown.
- Whether the title was fully downloaded and installed, whether an update was available, and whether reinstalling changed the result.
- Whether a new game without the existing save was tested, without deleting the original save.
- The controller model, USB or wireless connection method, and whether a DualSense paired successfully over USB.
- The names of other games tested and whether they show the same behavior.
- A screenshot or video when possible, especially for a fleeting visual artifact or a repeatable input failure.
For a publisher report, state that the issue remains after the general PS5 checks rather than claiming that a particular maintenance option should fix it. For a console repair request, lead with the fact that multiple titles reproduce the problem and list each one.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
Deleting the only save first
A save-file test is useful only when you preserve the original evidence. Starting a new game can show whether the save is implicated; deleting the save removes the comparison and may permanently remove progress. Keep the original until support has advised otherwise.
Treating every glitch as a controller fault
A controller cannot normally explain a missing texture, corrupted geometry, or a crash that occurs before input is needed. Verify controller compatibility for input symptoms, but classify visual and application failures separately.

Assuming a PS2 controller is supported because the game is a PS2 title
The original console generation and the current console’s accessory compatibility are different questions. Sony explicitly excludes controllers intended for PlayStation, PS2, and PS3, including DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2, from PS5 compatibility.

Using a factory reset as a routine fix
Reset options delete user data and should follow backups, less destructive checks, and support advice. A reset is not an officially documented per-title emulator repair.
Looking for undocumented emulator switches
The official material covered here does not provide graphics renderers, frame-rate toggles, per-game compatibility modes, or controller-remapping instructions for PS2 Classics on PS5. Do not invent a setting or promise that one exists. A title-specific answer has to come from the publisher or PlayStation support channel that handles that release.
What the troubleshooting results can and cannot establish
Completing the sequence can tell you whether the game was incomplete, out of date, affected by a particular save, or changed by a clean reinstall. A successful USB pairing test can rule out an unsupported legacy controller as the immediate cause of an input failure. Testing several titles can show whether the symptom is isolated or broad.
