PS3 error 80710723 is usually a network-path or router failure that interrupts a game, PlayStation Network (PSN), or system-software download. It is not, by itself, a diagnosis of a full hard drive or insufficient storage. Start with the PS3 Internet Connection Test, then use a direct Ethernet connection to separate Wi-Fi trouble from router, ISP, PSN, or title-specific problems. Once the connection is stable, retry from the official System Update menu.
What error 80710723 means
The code commonly appears when a PS3 cannot finish downloading an update or other content from PSN. A support discussion from Electronic Arts identifies it as a network/router error during a PS3 update download. That is useful code-specific evidence, but Sony’s current PS3 documentation is the authoritative source for the diagnostic process and network settings.

The same code can have different practical causes. A console may sign in successfully yet fail while transferring a large update; a wireless link can drop packets even though web access works on another device; or one game’s update service can be unavailable while PSN tests pass. Treat the code as a signal to locate the failed stage rather than as proof that one particular setting, such as DNS, is always responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Network setup problem: the PS3 cannot obtain an IP address or reach the Internet reliably.
- Wireless compatibility or interference: the older PS3 Wi-Fi connection is sensitive to security settings, signal quality, and supported 802.11b/g operation.
- Router or ISP restriction: firewall rules, proxy use, UPnP behavior, firmware, or an Internet outage interrupts the path.
- PSN or title service issue: the console’s local tests pass, but a particular update server or PSN function is unavailable.
Record exactly where the code appears before changing anything: during sign-in, in the PSN Store, while installing a system update, or while patching one game. That detail determines whether you should focus on the whole connection or only one download service.

Use the PS3 Internet Connection Test first
Sony’s built-in test breaks the connection into stages. On the XMB, open Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Test. Run it and note every result, not just the final pass or fail.
| Test item | What it tells you | What to do if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Obtain IP Address | Whether the PS3 received a local address from the router. | Check the Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi credentials, DHCP on the router, and the PS3’s IP setting. |
| Internet Connection | Whether the console can reach the wider Internet beyond the local router. | Check the router’s Internet service, firewall rules, ISP status, and DNS configuration. |
| PSN sign-in | Whether the PS3 can authenticate with PSN. | Separate a PSN availability or account issue from a local network failure; do not assume a DNS change will fix a PSN outage. |
| UPnP | Whether the router supports automatic port mapping for applications that request it. | Check router UPnP behavior. A failed UPnP result does not automatically mean basic downloads cannot work, but it can affect restricted communication. |
| NAT Type | How directly the console can communicate through the router. | Investigate router NAT, firewall, and UPnP settings if games or services report restricted connectivity. |
| Download speed | The throughput measured by the PS3 at test time. | Compare wired and wireless results and check for congestion. The test does not establish a universal minimum speed for every update. |
| Upload speed | The measured upstream throughput. | Use it as a connection clue, not as proof that a particular update server is healthy. |
Sony’s guide states that a failed IP-address or Internet result requires inspecting the network settings. Keep a written note or photograph of the results. It will prevent you from repeating changes and gives an ISP or PlayStation support representative useful evidence.
Fastest isolation step: test with wired Ethernet
If the PS3 is on Wi-Fi, connect it directly to the router with a standard RJ45 Ethernet cable and run the Internet Connection Test again. A wired test is both a potential workaround and the quickest diagnostic split:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Connection | Reliability for a large download | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Ethernet | Usually steadier because it avoids radio interference and weak signal conditions. | If the update works by cable, investigate Wi-Fi security, range, channel congestion, or compatibility. |
| Wi-Fi | Convenient but affected by distance, walls, interference, and legacy security compatibility. | If both wired and wireless fail at the same test stage, the cause is more likely the router, ISP, PSN, or the title service. |
Use the cable directly to the router for this test rather than adding a wireless bridge or another intermediate device. You are trying to remove the radio portion of the path. If the wired test passes and the update completes, no DNS or MTU change is necessary; repair the wireless configuration instead.

Reconfigure PS3 network settings only where the test points
To edit the connection, open Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings, choose the connection method, and select Custom. Do not change every option at once. Preserve settings that already pass and alter only the failed or suspect part.
IP address acquisition
For a normal home router, allow automatic IP configuration unless your network administrator has supplied a documented static address. A failure at Obtain IP Address can result from an unplugged cable, incorrect wireless security credentials, disabled DHCP, or an address conflict. Fix local connectivity before experimenting with DNS.
DNS
Use automatic DNS unless your ISP, workplace, or network administrator has given you a specific DNS requirement. The available evidence does not establish one public DNS address as universally faster or more reliable for every PS3, ISP, and region. A DNS change is therefore a targeted troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed cure. If the Internet test already passes and only one game’s patch fails, changing DNS repeatedly can distract from a title-server or PSN problem.
MTU
Leave MTU on Automatic unless your network requires a documented value. An arbitrary manual MTU can create a new fragmentation problem and makes the result harder to interpret. Change it only when an administrator or a measured network requirement gives you a specific value, then rerun the complete connection test.

Proxy server
At the proxy-server prompt, select Do Not Use unless you intentionally connect through a proxy. An unintended or obsolete proxy can allow some sign-in traffic while blocking or interrupting downloads. If your household or organization deliberately uses a proxy, obtain the correct address and port from its administrator instead of disabling it blindly.
UPnP and NAT
Leave UPnP enabled when your router supports it and you need automatic application mapping. A failed UPnP result can coincide with restrictive NAT, which is more noticeable in multiplayer or direct communication than in ordinary browsing. Check the router’s UPnP and NAT behavior as a pair; changing the PS3 alone cannot repair a router that blocks the required mapping.
Check the router, ISP, and wireless environment
Before resetting the PS3, verify the network outside the console. Confirm that another device on the same router can reach the Internet. If no device works, the PS3 is not the primary fault: restore the router’s Internet connection or contact the ISP.

Wireless security and 802.11 compatibility
Sony’s connection guidance specifically calls out wireless security and compatibility with 802.11b/g operation for the legacy PS3 Wi-Fi hardware. Re-enter the network name and security key carefully. If the router is configured only for a newer wireless mode, a mixed or legacy-compatible mode may be required for the PS3; use the router’s documented compatibility option rather than guessing at encryption settings. Test again after each single change.

Firewall, filtering, and firmware
Router firewall rules, parental controls, MAC filtering, and ISP-level restrictions can interrupt PSN transfers. Review these controls for the PS3’s local IP address. Keep the router’s firmware current, because Sony’s guidance recommends current network-equipment firmware. If the router was recently replaced or updated, compare its settings with the previous configuration, especially DHCP, NAT, UPnP, and wireless security.
Media Server Connection
On the PS3, open Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection and disable it temporarily if it is interfering with the network. This is a diagnostic change, not a permanent requirement. Retry the connection test and update; re-enable the feature later if it was not related.
Router restart and test order
Restart the router using its normal power procedure, wait until its Internet status is restored, then restart the PS3 and run the test again. Record whether the failure moved from IP acquisition to Internet access, or whether all stages now pass. The movement of the failure is more informative than a single speed result.

When the connection test passes, start the download from Settings > System Update > Update via Internet. Sony recommends keeping PS3 system software current and documents a computer-update route as an alternative when an Internet update cannot be completed.

- If the download fails again, rerun Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Test and compare the new results with your notes.
If the PS3’s connection tests pass and the code occurs only while patching one game, stop changing console-wide settings. Check whether other downloads work and consider a title-specific service interruption or PSN availability issue. A failure limited to one title is evidence against a general IP, DNS, or Wi-Fi fault, although it does not prove which server is at fault.

| Observed result | Most useful next action | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Obtain IP Address fails | Check cable, Wi-Fi key, router DHCP, and the PS3 connection method. Repeat with wired Ethernet. | Do not treat this as a PSN outage; the console has not reached the Internet yet. |
| IP passes, Internet Connection fails | Check router Internet access on another device, ISP status, firewall, proxy, and DNS acquisition. | Signing in on another device does not prove the PS3’s route is correct. |
| Internet passes, PSN sign-in fails | Check PSN/account availability and the console’s date, network, and sign-in conditions; retain the test record. | Do not keep changing MTU when the local Internet path already passes. |
| PSN passes, UPnP or NAT is restricted | Review router UPnP, NAT, and firewall settings, particularly if multiplayer or direct communication is affected. | A UPnP failure alone does not establish that every download will fail. |
| All tests pass, one game update fails | Retry later, test another download, and investigate that game’s update service or PSN availability. | Do not assume the PS3’s storage or DNS is defective solely from 80710723. |
| All tests pass, system update fails repeatedly | Use a wired connection, confirm router firmware and proxy settings, then try the documented computer-update route. | Do not interrupt the console during an installation already in progress. |
When a computer-based system update is appropriate
Sony provides a computer-update route for cases in which the PS3 cannot complete an Internet update. Use Sony’s current instructions for the required USB format, folder names, and update file; those details must match the version of the official instructions you are following. The computer route can bypass a failing PS3 download path, but it does not repair a router, ISP, or PSN outage. If the console cannot obtain an IP address on multiple networks, resolve that connectivity problem or obtain support rather than assuming a USB update will explain the original cause.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing DNS first: DNS cannot repair a disconnected cable, failed DHCP, blocked router, or unavailable update server.
- Testing only Wi-Fi: without a wired comparison, you cannot tell radio interference from an upstream failure.
- Ignoring the exact scope: a single game’s patch failing is different from every PSN download failing.
- Leaving an unintended proxy enabled: this can selectively disrupt downloads even when basic access appears normal.
- Using arbitrary MTU values: an undocumented value may create fragmentation and obscure the original fault.
- Resetting everything simultaneously: changing IP, DNS, MTU, proxy, and router settings at once removes the evidence that identifies the failed stage.
- Assuming storage is the cause: code 80710723 is associated with the network/download path; the code alone does not establish a capacity problem.
- Powering off during installation: once an update is installing, interruption can create a separate software-recovery problem.
What to document before contacting support
Prepare a concise record so support can distinguish a console fault from a network or service fault:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The exact activity that produced 80710723: sign-in, Store access, system update, or one game’s patch.
- Whether the console used Wi-Fi or a direct Ethernet cable.
- Every Internet Connection Test result, including IP, Internet, PSN, UPnP, NAT, download, and upload fields.
- Whether another device worked on the same router at the same time.
- Any recent router replacement, firmware change, ISP change, or wireless-security change.
- Whether disabling an unintended proxy or Media Server Connection changed the result.
- Whether the failure occurs on more than one network.
If the PS3 cannot obtain an IP address or an Internet connection on multiple networks, provide this record to the ISP or PlayStation support. If all local tests pass but one title alone fails, report the title and update version to that game’s support channel or check PSN availability before making further console-wide changes.
Practical decision guide
Use a direct retry when
- Obtain IP Address, Internet Connection, and PSN sign-in all pass.
- The error was a one-time interruption and other downloads work.
- You have already removed an unintended proxy and confirmed the router is online.
Investigate the router when
- IP acquisition fails or works intermittently.
- Wired Ethernet succeeds while Wi-Fi fails.
- UPnP or NAT is restricted and multiplayer/direct communication is affected.
- Another device also loses Internet access, or router firmware and security settings recently changed.
Escalate a service or title issue when
- All PS3 tests pass on a stable wired connection.
- Only one game’s update repeatedly returns the code.
- Multiple devices or users report a PSN or game-service outage.
Bottom line
Fix 80710723 by locating the failed network stage, not by applying a random DNS value. Run the PS3 Internet Connection Test, repeat it over direct Ethernet, correct only the indicated IP, DNS, MTU, proxy, UPnP, NAT, wireless, or router issue, and retry at Settings > System Update > Update via Internet. If every test passes and only one title fails, treat that as a possible service-specific problem; if IP or Internet access fails across multiple networks, take the recorded results to your ISP or PlayStation support.
